Eastern Ontario Legend Teams Chase National Qualifier Spots July 8th at Peterborough

Eastern Ontario Legend Teams Chase National Qualifier Spots July 8th at Peterborough

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

It promises to be the biggest event in the history of the Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series. Saturday, July 8th, at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval, the popular tour will award a trio of guaranteed starting spots for the US Legends Asphalt Nationals – October 13th and 14th – at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Bullring.

"This will be the first time that Peterborough Speedway has hosted a National Qualifier," said Jeff Drimmie, who along with Andrew McFadden, Geordie Ledson and Kevin Foisy make-up the team of EOLS officials. "The top finishers in the Pro, Semi-Pro and Masters divisions will each advance to the big show. Teams will be running a 30-lap main event, with increased prize money throughout the field."

With Matt Haufe already owning a fist full of feature event wins on this year's tour, he'll definitely be one of the cars to beat, but Drimmie says he expects every driver in the starting line-up to bring their best run to the table with so much on the line. Series officials have also arranged to have an open test session for Legends drivers – Friday, July 7th, from 4:00 'til 7:00 – at Peterborough Speedway. Teams can test (one car on the track at a time) for just $10.00.

On raceday – Saturday, July 8th – pit gates will open at 2:00, with the spectator areas unlocked at 4:00 and the night's first green flag at 5:00. Because its also Fan Appreciation Night, general admission grandstand tickets are just $2.00.

Another Main Event, Another First Time Main Event Winner on the 2017 OMRS Tour

Another Main Event, Another First Time Main Event Winner on the 2017 OMRS Tour

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

And the streak continues.

Saturday, July 1st another first timer took the checkered flag, as Stu Robinson Jr. took the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – feature win at Flamboro Speedway.

A rainy start to the day limited the amount of practice the teams received and forced changes to the day's schedule, but it couldn't delay the inevitable result. Taking the green flag from the inside of the front row – in just his second main event start of the season – Robinson Jr. would grab an early lead in the tour's first race of the year at the venerable Hamilton, Ontario area oval.

The pace was slowed by just one caution flag during the 25-lap distance, when the cars of former series champion Rob Warnes and Randy Hollingsworth collided and became hooked together. It took track officials a bit of time to get the cars separated, but things went clean and green through the rest of the race distance. Even though he had come from deep in the field, Brad Stevenson was in touch with the leader for the closing stages of the event, but couldn't find his way past.

Robinson Jr. – who was named the top first-year runner with the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series after his second-place finish in the 2016 standings – took his first career OMRS checkered flag over Stevenson, Rick Warnes, Duane Cinnamon and Mark Gordon. Connor James, Chris Burrows, Willow Barberstock, Craig Stevenson, Randy Hollingsworth and Rob Warnes completed the finishing order.

Setting the Autumn Colours Classic Field at Peterborough Speedway

Setting the Autumn Colours Classic Field at Peterborough Speedway

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

The Autumn Colours Classic is one of the most prestigious short track events anywhere in the country. This year's 25th edition – October 6th through 8th at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval – will welcome over 10 different racing divisions. Sunday, July 2nd drivers in the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, Thunder Car and Organics & Glass Late Model classes locked-in the front row starting spots during the Chase for the Colours Pole Qualifier.

Feature race action got underway with a 40 lapper for the Thunder Cars, as James Townsend and Fedele DiBello brought the field to the Great Canadian RV green flag. Townsend took control of the field early and the pack began to work through lapped traffic with just 10 laps on the board. Anthony DiBello wrestled the top spot away on the 12th circuit, with invader Carson Nagy mounting a hard charge. Nagy's run came to an end when the #63 machine suffered mechanical issues and crashed in turn 3. The incident also collected Kris Allard, who was running 3rd. DiBello would lead the rest of the way and survived a pair of late cautions to take the win over Dan Archibald, Bailey Jacobs, Townsend and Tyler Bouillon.

Steve Brier and Tyler Junkin brought the Jiffy Lube Mini Stock pack from the staging area for the 35-lap feature tilt. Junkin – a former track champion – took the early lead and had a 6-car length advantage by the time there were 12 laps on the board. By then, Kris Khan had moved into second spot, with infiltrator Johnny Paradzinski mirroring his every move. Khan took the lead on a lap 16 restart and his teammate James Townsend claimed second with 27 laps complete. The top 3 broke away from the field over the closing stages, as Khan took the win over Townsend and Paradzinski. Kevin Strutt and Junkin chased the lead trio across the line.

With Jack Horner and Bryan Mercer on the front row, the Organics & Glass Late Models came to the line for a 60-lap feature that would determine the front row starting spots for the 25th running of the Autumn Colours Classic. The inside line moved away quickly, with Mercer being shuffled back to 5th before he could get a spot in the preferred racing groove. A lap 8 yellow flag slowed the pace, with reigning Late Model track champion Rick Spencer-Walt – who now calls Sunset Speedway his home track – taking the lead on the restart. The #31W machine would survive a number of late race cautions and a challenge from Ryan Kimball – another former track regular – for the win. Amanda Balson, Dan McHattie and Mercer completed the top 5.

Keith Parkes and Jeremy Kelly paced the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun starting grid to the stripe to close out the feature race action. From the drop of the green flag, Kelly took the lead in the 30-lap affair that saw the leaders catch the tail end of the field with about 10 circuits on the scoreboard. Griffin Powell – a former Autumn Colours champion – would steal the lead from Kelly on lap 18 and held the spot the rest of the way. Jake Kelly followed the race winner and his brother across the line, with Parkes and Malcolm 'Pops' MacDonald in 4th and 5th respectively.

Qualifiers for the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun division went to Sean Kennedy, Griffin Powell, Connor Parkes and Jeremy Kelly. Dan Archibald, Ken Grubb, Carson Nagy and James Townsend claimed Thunder Car heat race wins, with Johnny Paradzinski, James Townsend, Andy McCann and  Willow Barberstock scoring checkered flags in the Jiffy Lube Mini Stocks. Defending Peterborough Speedway track champion Rick Spencer-Walt, Jack Horner, Taylor Holdaway and James Horner took the Organics & Glass Late Model preliminary rounds.

Bullring bullet points: Dale Lyons of Norwood, Ontario won $608.00 in the day's 50/50 draw…Former track champion Tyler Junkin took over at the controls of Donovan Price's #96 Mini Stock for the day…A brief rain shower put things behind schedule for about 45 minutes, but a solid effort by track drying crews got things back underway. A second round of rain – expected later in the day – had failed to arrive by the time the final checkered flag fell…Brad Lavalle's freshly painted and lettered #06 Thunder Car received heavy damage in a front stretch wreck during the second round of qualifying. The driver was uninjured…The 5thplace Thunder Car main event finish by Tyler Bouillon was the best of the young racer's rookie season so far.

Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval returns to action Saturday, July 8th with the year's second Summer Toonie Night, presented by Pepsi. The Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, Thunder Car, Organics & Glass Late Model and Eastern Ontario Legend divisions will be on the card. For the Legends, it will be a National Qualifier with 3 guaranteed starting spots for an October event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway up for grabs. Racing will start at 5:00and general admission grandstand tickets are just $2.00.

Devil's Bowl Speedway Moves Sunday Fireworks Event to Monday Night

Fireworks and dirt racing postponed to Monday, July 3; SCoNE cancels appearance

For Immediate Release                                                                                                                                                                                 DBS-070217-1

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Devil's Bowl Speedway has pushed its "Coca-Cola Firecracker" Dirt Track racing program and Vermont's biggest fireworks display back by one day due to saturated grounds.  The event has been moved from Sunday, July 2, to Monday, July 3, with a new starting time of 7:00 p.m.

Heavy rains on Saturday caused major flooding in the region and left parts of the Devil's Bowl facility – including Turn 2 of the Dirt Track – under as much as four feet of water.  The water has drained sufficiently, but the track was left in no condition for racing.  Speedway crews began work just before 12:00 noon on Sunday to aerate the entire clay surface and are confident that the track will be in good shape for racing on Monday night.

Monday night's event will include the weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sportsman Modifieds, Super Stocks, and Mini Stocks, along with the wild-and-crazy Enduro Series and a massive fireworks display.  The annual Thomas Dairy Kids Bicycle Giveaway will also be on the card at intermission.

Some changes have been made to the program because of the postponement.  Management from the Sprint Cars of New England series has elected to cancel its race and will not be a part of the racing program on Monday night.  The Super Stock and Mini Stock divisions, in addition to their feature races, will now also run qualifying heats on Monday.

General admission for Monday, July 3, will be $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, $5 for teenagers, and free for kids age 12 and under.  Pit passes are $35 per person, age 10 and up; the Enduro Series entry fee is $50 and includes the driver's pit pass.  Pit area gates will open at 4:30 p.m., grandstand gates open at 6:00 p.m., and racing begins at 7:00 p.m.; fireworks are expected to begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Devil's Bowl Speedway is located on Route 22A in West Haven, Vt., four miles north of U.S. Route 4, Exit 2.  For more information, visit www.DevilsBowlSpeedwayVT.com or call (802) 265-3112.  Devil's Bowl Speedway is on Facebook atfacebook.com/DevilsBowlSpeedway and on Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat at @DevilsBowlSpeed; follow the action using the #DevilsBowl hashtag.
