Lapcevich to Make History When He Takes Green Flag

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 13, 2016) – The NASCAR Pinty's Series will concludes its 2016 season with the Kawartha 250 at Kawartha Speedway on Saturday in Fraserville, Ontario.

 

While this year's driver's battle for the championship isn't as close as the four-, three- and two-point margins between 2013-2015, this year's NPS championship will be no less historic.

 

Cayden Lapcevich only has to take the green flag to clinch his first championship and in the process break the record as the youngest champion in the history of NASCAR.

 

The Grimsby, Ontario native will break the record currently held by former Daytona 500 winner and 2016 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup contender Joey Logano.

 

Logano won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship in 2007 at 17 years, 3 months, 28 days.

 

Andrew Ranger, who sits in second place in the standings, will try to finish the season on a strong point after mechanical issues in two of the past three races cost him a chance at another title.

 

While Lapcevich has all but clinched the driver's title, he's also secured the Josten's Rookie of the Year Award and has a chance to have his mom and car owner Sherri Lapcevich to win that title as well.

 

She holds a 20-point advantage over Alex Tagliani's car owner Colin Livingston (462-442) heading into the season finale.

Fast Facts
The Race: The Kawartha 250 will be the 12th and final event on the 2016 NASCAR Pinty's Series and the 10th all-time trip to Kawartha Speedway.

 

The Procedure: The maximum starting field is 26 cars, including provisionals. The first 23 cars will have secured starting positions based on two lap time trials and the remaining three spots will be awarded through the provisional process. The race is scheduled for 250 laps (93.75 miles/150.87 Kilometers)

 

The Track: Kawartha Speedway is part of the Kawartha Downs and Speedway complex in Fraserville, Ontario, east of Toronto near Peterborough. The .375-mile asphalt oval speedway with progressive banking is surrounded by a harness-racing horse track.

 

Pole Winners: The nine previous Kawartha races have each produced seven different pole winners as J.R. Fitzpatrick is the only driver with more than one. Scott Steckly set the series' track qualifying record on Sept. 19, 2015 at 17.666 seconds (76.418 mph).

 

Race Winners: There have been five different winners in the first nine Pinty's Series events at Kawartha, led by D.J. Kennington's three triumphs.

Kawartha Closers: This year's Kawartha 250 will keep the tradition alive. Each and every season of NASCAR Pinty's Series competition since 2007 has concluded with the season finale at Kawartha Speedway.

 

Drivers Still Looking for Win: After coming close last week at St. Eustache, D. J. Kennington will try to close out the 2016 season with a win at Kawartha. The 2010 & 2012 NPS champion has won three times at Kawartha and last won a series race at Trois-Rivieres in 2013 – a span of 37 races. Jason Hathaway's second of two wins at Kawartha came in the 2015 season finale. Gary Klutt is the only other active driver who won in 2015 (CTMP-1) that is still looking for a win this season.

 

Ironmen to Continue Impressive Accomplishment:Both D.J. Kennington and Jason Hathaway have started every race in the history of the NPS which stands at 120 entering this Saturday.

 

Lacroix, Lapcevich Attempt To Keep Rookie Streak Alive: Since Cayden Lapcevich's win in Saskatoon in July, he and fellow Josten's Rookie of the Year contender Kevin Lacroix have rotated wins in the last five races. They have already set a series record for most consecutive wins by rookie drivers and will try to close out the season with six straight wins.

"Le Sheriff" et Lapcevich, vedettes du "Lucas Oil 250"

Dame nature aura bien tout tenté afin de "casser l'party" de l'édition 2016 du "Lucas Oil 250", mais rien n'y fit. Présenté par "Bumper to Bumper" et "Coors Light", le plus gros événement de la saison "Stock-Car" de l'Autodrome St-Eustache se sera avéré un franc succès. Avec tout près de 450 tours d'action sur la piste, le couronnement de notre champion local de la série "Nascar Sportsman Lucas Oil" jumelé à l'éclatante victoire du jeune Cayden Lapcevich en série "Nascar Pinty's", il ne fait aucun doute que les amateurs furent comblés.

Série Nascar Sportsman Lucas Oil:
Deux épreuves de 50 tours au menu de cette journée dès plus chargé, afin de déterminer le champion de la série reine de l'ASE. D'entré de jeux, le meneur au championnat, Jean-François Bouvrette #38, ne détenait qu'une mince avance de 13 points sur Sylvain Lacombe #3Jr. Absent d'un programme plus tôt en saison, mais ayant une victoire de plus à son crédit, Lacombe semblait avoir le vent dans les voiles en fin de saison. Le scénario est écrit pour le pilote de Terrebonne, ça lui prend deux victoires. Lacombe fait flèches de tout bois, et ajoute un gain à son palmarès lors de la première épreuve de la journée en doublant Martin Fauteux #10, lors d'une relance avec une quinzaine de tours à faire. Mission accomplie pour Lacombe, alors que J.F. Bouvrette termine quant à lui troisième. Telle une peau de chagrin, l'avance du "Sheriff" venait de se réduire à six points.

Presque un film hollywoodien, tout allait ce décider sur les résultats du dernier 50 tours de la saison. Pour celui-ci, les deux antagonistes prennent respectivement le départ, de l'intérieur de la quatrième ligne pour Bouvrette, alors que Lacombe est tout juste derrière lui, à l'intérieur de la cinquième ligne. Les deux pilotes vont graduellement remonter le peloton pour venir s'installer derrière la #1 de Steve Côté qui depuis le début de l'épreuve domine les 22 voitures ayant pris le départ. Impossible pour les deux prétendants au titre de passer la Chevrolet de Côté, ce dernier fait sa course, pas question de laisser passer qui que ce soit, c'est la dernière de la saison, et il veut son "Flag". Deux relances à la mi-course offriront une fin d'épreuve épique aux spectateurs, Bouvrette et Lacombe "Side-by-side", ils s'échangent la deuxième et la troisième position, une course propre, il aurait été facile à un Bouvrette de "sortir" le 3Jr. mais pas question, ces chevaliers des temps modernes vont conclure ça à la régulière. Au final, Lacombe réussira à passer le "Sheriff" avec trois tours à faire, mais c'était trop peu trop tard. Steve Côté #1, remporte la dernière épreuve de la saison, Sylvain Lacombe #3Jr termine deuxième, et vice champion, alors que Jean-François Bouvrette #38 monte sur la dernière marche du podium et remporte un troisième titre en quatre ans, et ce, avec seulement quatre petits points de priorité.

Sans contredit, un championnat pleinement mérité pour J.F. "le Sheriff" Bouvrette. Patience, persévérance, intelligence, voir même prudence alors que cela ne rime pas nécessairement avec la compétition automobile. Une petite équipe, son fidèle André Doré à ses côtés, et lorsque ce dernier était en vacance au cours de l'été, Jean-François c'est même pointé à la piste seul, seul avec sa remorque, sa voiture et sa combinaison comme seul compagnon. Ce soir-là, son "frérot" est arrivé juste à temps pour l'aider à s'attacher dans la voiture. Un petit budget administré avec rigueur, certainement pas les moyens de reconstruire une autre voiture si le pire devait arriver... "Small is beautiful" dit le proverbe anglais, Jean-François Bouvrette devrait l'écrire sur le tableau de bord de sa Chevrolet #38... Si ce n'est déjà fait. Félicitation Champion, et bon voyage à Charlotte.


Un peu dans l'ombre et sans tambour ni trompette, Rémi Perreault #33R de St-Paul de Joliette, un transfuge d'une autre série, c'est joints en début de saison à la série de l'heure en "Stock-Car" au Québec, les "Nascar Sportsman Lucas Oil". Non seulement ce dernier roulait-il l'une des plus belles voitures du plateau cette saison, mais il remporte aussi le titre de recrue 2016.

Comme depuis déjà quelques saisons, la direction récompense la fidélité de ses pilotes de la série reine de l'Autodrome St-Eustache. Les pilotes ayant participé à toutes les épreuves de la saison se voient illisibles à un tirage. Cette année, c'était l'entreprise "Snap-On" qui offrait trois prix. Jo Mayer #18, ainsi que Alexandre Jeannotte #64A, son reparti avec des outils de qualitée "Snap-On", alors que Stéphane Charland #45, remporte quant à lui le grand prix, un superbe coffre à outils de la même entreprise.

Série Nascar Pinty's:

Définitivement, dame nature n'aura pas été tendre envers les pilotes de la série nationale "Nascar pinty's". En fait, ils furent les seuls à être importuné par la pluie en ce samedi. Une averse aura annulé leur séance de qualification en après-midi, puis une autre les aura forcés à prendre une pause de près d'une heure avec seulement 70 tours de complétée lors de la finale plus tard en soirée. Les amateurs en auront toutefois été quittes pour un spectacle de 250 tours complet, ou les équipes en auront eu plein les bras en ce qui concerne les différentes stratégies.

Si certains d'entre eux ont parié sur une épreuve qui aurait été écourtée par la météo en ravitaillant dès la relance avec à peine le tiers de la course de complétée, la stratégie gagnante fut sans contredit celle de la petite équipe de la famille Lapcevich. Dirigé de mains de maitre par son paternel et ancien pilote, Jeff Lapcevich, le jeune Cayden (pilote de troisièmes générations) aura démontré, du haut de ses 16 ans, l'ampleur de son talent. Demeurant en piste avec les mêmes pneumatiques et gardant sa Challenger #76 toujours dans le "Top-5", c'est avec moins de 40 passages à compléter que "papa" rappelle "fiston" aux puits pour lui installer de belles "chaussettes" neuves. À la relance, il sera septième, mais drôlement bien chaussé comparativement à ses adversaires. Patient, le jeune chirurgien s'empare des commandes de l'épreuve avec moins de dix tours à compléter, et résistera, presque facilement, à un "Vert-Blanc-Damier" avant de se mériter une troisième victoire consécutive sur ovale. Avec maintenant une avance de plus de 40 points sur Andrew Ranger #27, son plus proche rival au classement, et avec seulement une autre épreuve à être courue la semaine prochaine, celui que l'ont qualifie de "Next big thing" au Canada, se voit virtuellement assuré du titre de champion "Nascar pinty's" 2016.

Une stratégie audacieuse du paternel, jumelé au talent du jeune Cayden Lapcevich leurs auront assuré une brillante victoire.

D.J. Kennington #17, ainsi que Mark Dilley #02, grands animateurs de la deuxième portion du "Lucas Oil 250" l'auront accompagné sur le podium, alors que Adam Martin #9, et Alex Tagliani #18 complète le "Top-5". Nos autres Québécois, même si exclus du podium pour une rare occasion, auront toutefois offert d'excellentes prestations, lors de la première moitié de l'épreuve. Alex Labbé #32, s'étant mérité la pôle en vertu de ses temps de pratiques, tout comme le favori local, Keven Lacroix #74, qui l'accompagnait sur la première ligne, auront quant à eux, offert aux spectateurs des performances à la hauteur des attentes.


Rarement exclus du podium, nos Québécois auront tout de même offert d'excellentes performances en début d'épreuve.


D.J. Kennington #17 ainsi que Jason Hathaway #3, les deux derniers membres du club très sélect des pilotes ayant participé à toutes les épreuves de la série Nascar Canadienne depuis sa création en 2007, et ce, sans compter leurs départs dans l'ancienne série Cascar, étaient au rendez-vous du "Lucas Oil 250"

Le club très restreint des pilotes à avoir participé à toutes les épreuves de la série depuis ses débuts.

"120 and still counting" de dire ces deux lascars qui on bien l'intention d'être de retour pour la saison 2017 si des partenaires commerciaux veulent bien les soutenir. Scott Steckly, quatre fois champion de la série, et qui pilotait la voiture #22 jusqu'à l'an dernier, était l'autre membre de ce prestigieux club. Ce dernier c'est vu forcé à se convertir (après 9 saisons et 109 départs consécutifs) en propriétaire / préparateur / locateur de voiture de course, suite au retrait de commandite de la compagnie de pneu Canadienne qui, non seulement donnait son nom à la série, mais était aussi son principal partenaire depuis ses débuts.


Série Nascar Sport-Compacte M.R.Q.:

Ayant connu son lot d'incidents de courses et de problèmes de toutes sortes en 2016, Robin Harrisson #3 remporte finalement sa première victoire de la présente campagne. Plus déterminé que jamais, le pilote de La Plaine s'élançait de l'extérieur de la première ligne et s'empare des commandes de cette épreuve prévue de trente tours dès le premier passage et laisse dans son sillage la quinzaine de participants qui le poursuivait.

Intraitable, Harrisson dominera de bout en bout pour ne laisser que les dernières marches du podium aux Yannick Miron #90, et Marc Verner #77. Yannick Thibeault #72, ainsi que Stéphane Gauvreau #68 complète quant à eux le "Top-5".


Série Nascar Légende Modifiée:

Pour un deuxième programme consécutif, c'est le jeune Jessy Lambert #64 qui se sera illustré. Une quinzaine de tours d'une épreuve de trente passages auront été suffisants à ce pilote de St-Eustache avant de confortablement s'installer en pôle et ainsi dominer la vingtaine de participants y ayant pris le départ.

Sébastien Lapolice #11, ainsi que le meneur au championnat, Stéphane Caron #99, l'ont suivi au fil d'arrivée, alors que les Dany's Campeau #97 et Lucien Campeau Jr. #90 complète le "Top-5"


Série Challenge-4 Meilleur Ramoneur:

Une fois de plus, c'est le jeune Kevin Huet Ouellet #05 qui, au final, signe la victoire de cette épreuve de 25 tours de la série de développement de l'ASE. Parti de la septième position d'une grille comptant plus d'une quinzaine de participants, Huet Ouellet prend les commandes en mi-course, pour se voir coiffé au fil d'arrivée, lors d'un "Vert-Blanc-Damier" par le #23 de Michael Fong.

Après les inspections d'usage, la voiture #23 sera toutefois jugée non conforme, privant ainsi Fong de sa première victoire dans cette série, créditant par le fait même, Huet Ouellet et sa #05 des précieux points de la victoire. Le meneur au classement et champion défendant, Jean-Philippe Duguay #18, tout comme la surprenante recrue, Francis Daigneault #40, terminent respectivement deuxième et troisième. Frédéric Miron #94, ainsi que Patrick Mayo #51 complète le "Top-5".


Maintenant que le championnat 2016 de la série reine de l'ASE en est arrivé à sa conclusion, les amateurs de "Stock-Car" de la région métropolitaine sont conviés à un dernier rendez-vous le dimanche 25 septembre prochain. À cette occasion, ce seront au tour des deux autres divisions Nascar, "Sport-Compacte", ainsi que "Légende Modifiée", tout comme la série de développement "Chalenge-4" de mettre un terme à leurs saisons et ainsi couronner leurs champions respectifs. La direction de l'Autodrome St-Eustache est aussi à pied d'oeuvre afin d'offrir par la même occasion, un "Évènement Spécial Nascar Sportsman" hors championnat. Stearns Steals First Devil's Bowl Dirt Win in Vince Quenneville Sr. Memorial

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Wayne Stearns used a strong racecar and a bit of patience to earn his first career NASCAR Whelen All-American Series victory at the Dirt Track at Devil's Bowl Speedway on Sunday, September 11.  The Bradford, Vt., veteran earned his win in the "Vince Quenneville Sr. Memorial" on Interstate All Battery Center of Rutland Night.  Matt Mosher, Jason Porter, and Brett Wood also went to the winner's circle during the event.

Persistence paid off for Stearns as he stalked the leaders for most of the 38-lap special event for the Central Vermont Motorcycles Sportsman Modified division.  Louie Cadwell and Lenny Pillsbury ran 1-2 for the first 15 laps before Pillsbury dropped out of the race, moving Stearns into second.  He chased Cadwell for the next 17 circuits before pouncing on Cadwell at lap 33 to take command.  A former champion at the Bear Ridge, Legion, and Canaan Fair Speedways, Stearns drove away as the laps clicked off for the win.

Tim LaDuc put on a show as he ran through the field after a lap-15 spin for the runner-up finish.  Cadwell held on to third for his best Devil's Bowl finish, followed by Allan Hammond and Justin Comes.  Point leader Bobby Hackel finished sixth ahead of Kenny Tremont Jr., Vince Quenneville Jr., Billy Lussier, and Joey Scarborough.

Matt Mosher of Queensbury, N.Y., won the 25-lap feature for the Rosen & Berger Auto Recyclers Renegade division with crosstown neighbor Curtis Condon in second.  Billy Duprey, who had won all six of his previous starts during the season, finished third after contact on the last lap with Josh Bussino.  R.J. Germain, a regular competitor on the Asphalt Track at Devil's Bowl, finished fourth in his first-ever dirt race, with Larry Bristol fifth.

Jason Porter of Freeport, Maine, finally saw his weekly 520-mile round trip to Devil's Bowl Speedway pay off with his first career win in the 25-lap Portland Glass Mini Stock feature.  It was a weekend sweep for Porter, who also grabbed his first-ever win at Bear Ridge Speedway the night before.  Wayland Childs finished second and reclaimed the point lead as previous leader Mike Ryan crashed out.  Derrick Counter finished third with Sean Lantas fourth.  Andrew FitzGerald came from 18th at the start to finish fifth in his first career start on dirt.

Brett Wood of Georgia, Vt., won a first-of-its-kind Enduro that saw drivers running on both the clay and paved surfaces at the same time.  Many drivers alternated between the two tracks during the non-stop 50-lapper, but Wood and runner-up Eric Messier ran the whole race on the dirt.  Cory Gray, who ran exclusively on pavement, finished third.  Zach Wood was fourth, the last car on the lead lap.  Jeff Murray finished fifth, two laps down.

Racing continues at the Dirt Track at Devil's Bowl Speedway on Sunday, September 18 at 5:00 p.m., with the rescheduled 50th Season "Tribute Series" event honoring inaugural track champion Mert "Socks" Hulbert.  The Sportsman Modified division will race 50 laps, while the Renegades and Mini Stocks are in action.  The Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds will join the card and the new Catamount Mini Sprints club will run its first-ever exhibition event.  Special general admission is $15.00 for adults, $13.00 for seniors (62+), $5.00 for teens (13-17), and free for kids age 12 and under.  Gates open at 3:00 p.m., and racing begins at 5:00 p.m.

Durgan Wins Devil's Bowl Speedway Asphalt Championship in a Tiebreaker

Masterson, McKiernan, Messier take season titles

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Jason Durgan and Vince Quenneville Jr. put on the most dramatic stock car show of the year at Devil's Bowl Speedway on Sunday, September 11.  The two veteran drivers were the stars of the half-mile Asphalt Track during the Rutland County facility's 50th season of racing and needed a tiebreaker to determine the track champion at the Vermont 200 Weekend.  Durgan, of Morrisonville, N.Y., became a first-time Devil's Bowl titleholder in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and will share the championship stage this winter with Josh Masterson, Jim McKiernan, and rookie Eric Messier.

Durgan and Quenneville entered the two-day Asphalt Track finale tied in point standings, but Morrisonville, N.Y., racer Durgan pulled ahead by two points after a 50-lap race on Saturday afternoon.  In Sunday's "Leon Gonyo Memorial" 50-lapper, defending champion Quenneville, of Brandon, Vt., did all he could by winning the race – his fourth score of the year – as Durgan's car struggled in traffic.

Durgan, however, caught some lucky breaks and benefitted from a late-race throttle linkage failure on the car of Saturday race winner Ron Proctor.  With nine laps left he found his No. 17 Valley View Firewood/Taylor Rental car in second place behind Quenneville and rode there until the end of the race to create a mathematical tie in the point standings.  Durgan got the tiebreaker based on total victories for the season and his five wins gave him the championship, sparking a raucous "Durga-Mania" celebration in victory lane.

Billy Lussier finished third in the race to complete his breakout season.  Jackie Brown Jr. finished fourth with Jamy Begor fifth.  The top 10 was completed, in order, by Joey Roberts, Travis Bruno, Codie Aubin, Chad White, and Rookie of the Year Chuck Bradford.

In the Central Vermont Motorcycles Late Model division, American-Canadian Tour regular Bobby Therrien of Hinesburg, Vt., invaded Devil's Bowl to win the 100-lap finale, doing so only after an exciting late battle for the lead with Josh Masterson.  Championship contender Robert Bryant Jr. looked like a potential winner as he led lead laps in the first half of the race, but a broken rear axle took him out of the running at lap 41.

When Bryant exited the race, Therrien inherited the lead and Masterson turned the wick up.  The two traded paint on several occasions and were challenged at various points by veterans Chris Bergeron, Jamie Aube, and Steve Miller.  Therrien finally cleared out to the lead with less than 15 laps left and cruised to the win as Bristol, Vt., racer Masterson finished second to clinch the championship, becoming the first multi-time Late Model champion in the seven-year history of the Asphalt Track at Devil's Bowl Speedway.

Aube finished third in the race, followed by Bergeron and Miller.  Luke Hinkley was sixth ahead of Dallas Trombley, Rich Lowrey Jr., first-time Late Model racer Dylan Payea, and early leader Seth Bridge.

Former Thunder Road Speedbowl champion Jason Woodard of Waterbury Center, Vt., took a surprise trip to victory lane in the 50-lap feature for the Rosen & Berger Auto Recyclers Renegade division, winning in his first-ever race at Devil's Bowl.  Jim McKiernan of Moriah Center, N.Y., gave Woodard a run for his money but settled for the runner-up finish, one spot ahead of Scott FitzGerald; that one on-track position was all that McKiernan needed, as he edged FitzGerald by just two points for the championship.

Fourteen year-old rookie Alexis Aiken earned her best Devil's Bowl finish in fourth with Matt Monaghan fifth; Monaghan led more than half of the race before fading late.

Brad Bertrand of Ferrisburgh, Vt., won the 25-lap finale for the Portland Glass Mini Stock division to take his third victory of the year, but it was Eric "Mongo" Messier of Hinesburg, Vt., who will hoist the big hardware.  Messier clinched both the championship and the Rookie of the Year titles with his runner-up finish.  Brett Wood finished third in the race ahead of Garrett Given and Dale O'Neil.

Devil's Bowl Speedway's Asphalt Track season is now complete, and the focus shifts to the 3/10-mile Dirt Track with events on September 18, September 25, andOctober 1.

AIRBORNE RACE REPORT 2016-09-17 & 2016-09-18

PLATTSBURGH- The final point counting weekend is upon us at Airborne Park Speedway. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series point standings presented by Fidelis Care will be decided on Sunday.
            Saturday's racing card will include the Ernie's Discount Tools Sportsman Modifieds, Jeffords Steel Renegades and Busch Beer Mini Mods. The highlight of Saturday's card will be the Leon Gonyo Memorial 44 lap event for the Sportsman Modifieds. Gonyo Racing has added bonus money to the final race purse. A pair of 20 lap features are scheduled for the Renegade division and a regular distance event for the Mini Mods.
            Post time on Saturday is at 4 p.m. with gates opening at 1 p.m. Admission prices are $12 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6 to 12 and $25 for a family of two adults and two kids.
            Championship Sunday is slated to commence at 2 p.m. Sportsman Modified, Renegade and Mini Mod point champions will be crowned at the end of the event. The Renegades will close out the season with a 50 lap event, while the Sportsman Modifieds and Mini Mods will run regular distance events.
            Admission prices for Sunday will be $12 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6 to 12 and $25 for a family of two adults and two children.
