They've been thinking about since the schedule was first announced and the wait for their time in the spotlight is almost over. Saturday, June 15th, the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock teams will get their chance to run a 50 lap main event at Peterborough Speedway. Track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse says every driver in the field is pumped about tackling a feature race that's more than twice as long as the regular distance.

"We want our home track teams to know how it feels to be the stars of the show," said Josiasse. "Every racer who comes through the pit gates on a Saturday night has family, friends and fans who want to see them strut their stuff. They all deserve the chance to shine and put their efforts into the forefront for all to see."

Also on the agenda for the next show at the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road will be a 30 lap KOD Disposal Super Stock qualifier, with a guaranteed starting position for the 2nd annual Canadian Short Track Nationals – August 31st and September 1st – at Jukasa Motor Speedway up for grabs. Fans will also get a taste of the Jiffy Lube Mini Stocks, Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Trucks and the Trailers Plus Ontario Legends. Rained-out Renegade Truck and Ontario Legend feature races from Saturday, June 1st will be made-up as part of the event. Pit gates will open at 2:30, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and the night's first green flag at 6:00.

Looking ahead to the Saturday, June 22nd schedule at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval as the home track Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck and Late Model divisions will be joined by the Can Am TQ Midgets and the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series. The Mini Stock teams will run a pair of main events, as the final of the rained-out features from Saturday, June 1st is made-up. Look to the schedule drop-down menu of the track web-site for complete details.

Ontario Legends’ Road Show Heads Back to Peterborough Speedway

Ontario Legends' Road Show Heads Back to Peterborough Speedway

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

Action on the track has been impressive. Car counts have been strong. But weather has been the biggest story in the early stages of the 2019 Trailers Plus Ontario Legend Series schedule. A pair of shows at Sunset Speedway were washed-out, as was the Saturday, June 1st date at Peterborough Speedway.

Using the posted schedule as a template, the Saturday, June 15th race at Peterborough should be the 5th show of the year, but so far the only completed event on this year's calendar was the May 18th date at the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road. Series spokesperson Jeff Drimmie says the drivers and teams are anxious to get in a full night of racing.

"Its been frustrating, but we're not the only ones feeling the pain," Drimmie explained. "Hopefully, we can get things turned around and get the cars on the track. We've seen some good numbers, with between 25 and 30 teams in the pits. Now its just a matter of putting on a show for the fans who come out to see our exciting brand of racing."

With the most recent cancellation at Peterborough coming just as the 5th qualifier of the night was completed teams will be running that night's main event along with the regularly scheduled show on June 15th. The line-up for the first feature was determined through the heats that were run on June 1st, while the grid for the second headliner will be determined by a new set of heat races. Pit gates will open at 2:30, with the grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and racing at 6:00.

Perfect Weather and Great Action Thrill Fans at Peterborough Speedway

Perfect Weather and Great Action Thrill Fans at Peterborough Speedway

A pair of feature races – for the hometown Late Model and Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock divisions – postponed by last week's rainout opened the Saturday, June 8th show at Peterborough Speedway.

Amanda Balson and Mark Gordon brought the field to the green flag for the Late Model 25 lapper. Gordon had a slight advantage from his outside front row starting spot, but it was quickly erased when the yellow flag waved for an issue in turn 3, with just a pair of laps on the scoreboard. On the restart, defending track champion Dan McHattie was using the high side of the track and gaining ground on the leaders. The top 3 were running nose to tail with 10 complete and encountered the back of the pack just a lap later. McHattie grabbed the lead with 16 laps showing on the scoreboard and survived a pair of late race yellows to claim his second win of the year over Balson, Brandon Feeney, Mark Gordon and Kyle Batty.

24 Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stocks came to Great Canadian RV green flag for the night's 2nd holdover feature with Bryan Knox and Malcolm MacDonald on the front row. Sean Kennedy was looking to the inside line and took the lead after an early debris caution. Even with the rest of the pack dicing for positions behind him, the hard-charger logged some strong, consistent laps on the way to his first checkered flag of 2019. Rob Crick, Corey Strawn, Knox and Ben Gruntz rounded-out the top 5.

Josh Gruntz and Randy Hollingsworth brought the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series crew to the line for their feature tilt. Hollingsworth's #62 struggled early and headed to the infield pit area with 6 laps complete. In contrast, Gruntz was a having a strong run and built-up nearly a half track's advantage, while about 7 others fought for spots behind him. Dwight Brown moved into 2nd, with Chad Strawn running 3rd in a show that had all the makings of a caution free ride. Just as the leaders were catching the tail of the field, the yellow flag flew for an issue in the 4th turn. Gruntz had the entire pack on his back bumper and despite a late race charge from Chad Strawn, he took the checkered flag in the 2019 OMRS opener. Dwight Brown, John Baker Jr. and Nick Lees completed the fast 5.

A solid pack of 28 starters – led by Chris Tubman and Corey Strawn – left the staging area for 20 laps of Bone Stock feature action. A debris caution flew after the opening lap, with Ryan Oosterholt and Strawn fighting for the runner-up spot behind Tubman. A second yellow waved on lap 4 and brought the pack together. Dave Marco was working on getting past Tubman and took over the top spot with the scoreboard showing 10 complete. A third and final caution flag gave everyone a last chance to catch the #19x, but he held-off the challenge. Even though he was the first car across the line, issues with Dave Marco's car in post race inspection gave the win to Ryan Oosterholt, with Tubman, Strawn, Kris Khan and Bryan Knox completing the top 5.

With Steve Powell and 2009 track champion Amanda Balson on the front row, the Late Model division hit Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval for 25 laps of excitement. At the drop of the green flag, it was as if Balson was shot from a gun. Her #16 was strong, but so were the cars of Ryan Kimball and Dan McHattie, who were marching through the field. The trio was working through lapped traffic when the race's only yellow flew for an issue in the 3rdturn, with only a handful of laps left to go. On the restart, Balson had one challenger on her outside and another on her back bumper, but she was up to the task in the 5 lap trophy dash. McHattie took 2nd, with Kimball 3rd. Kyle Batty was 4th and Brandon Feeney continued his strong early season runs with 5th.

Victor Vowles and Dwight Lavoie led the Jiffy Lube Mini Stockers to the stripe to conclude the night's action. Jeremy Kelly – who moved-up from the Bone Stock ranks at the start of the year – took the 2nd spot with 2 laps down and was leading the 20 lap affair just 6 circuits later. His #80 machine was strong, maintaining the lead through a lap 12 caution, but not strong enough to keep Almonte, Ontario's Nolan Gould from stealing the win with a late race pass. Defending track champion Ryan Oosterholt also got around Kelly, who hung-on for 3rd. Vowles and James Townsend completed the top 5.

Dave Marco claimed a pair of Bone Stock heats, with the others going to Kyle Novis, Corey Strawn, Ryan Oosterholt and Chris Tubman. Amanda Balson picked-up a pair of Late Model qualifiers, with Dan McHattie and Ryan Kimball taking the others. Neil Hannah took home a couple of Mini Stock heats, with Kent Missons and Nolan Gould finishing the win's list. Tim Burke, Tyler Betts, Dan Archibald and Kyle Gordon shared the Super Stock preliminary rounds. Chad Strawn, Brad Stevenson, Dwight Brown and John Baker Jr. shared the OMRS heats.

All finishing positions are unofficial, subject to scoring review and post race inspection.

Bullring bullet points: Former Late Model track champion Tyler Betts took a turn in the #28 Super Stock, in place of Howie Crowe. Wes Cuthbertson – a regular with the Ontario Legends Series – steered the #33 Mini Stock, while former track champion and Autumn Colours winner Ryan Kimball made his first start of the year in the Late Model field. Mike Howe – affectionately known as "Fat Mike" – was back in the #T4 Mini Stock for the first time in 3 years.

Next action at the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road is Saturday June 15th with a 50 lap feature for the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stocks and a 30 lap KOD Disposal Super Stock qualifier for the Canadian Short Track Nationals. The Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Trucks, Jiffy Lube Mini Stocks and Trailers Plus Ontario Legends will also be on the show. The Renegade Trucks and Ontario Legends will run double features, to make up for events that were rained-out Saturday, June 1st. Pit gates open at 2:30, with spectator grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and racing at 6:00.

Josh Gruntz Scores his First Career Ontario Modifieds Series Feature Win

Josh Gruntz Scores his First Career Ontario Modifieds Series Feature Win

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

It may have taken a couple of weeks longer than expected, but Josh Gruntz didn't mind waiting for his first ever main event win with the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. and Gen 3 Electrical – Saturday, June 8th at Peterborough Speedway.

The Peterborough native – who now makes his home in Little Britain – wheeled his #31 open wheeled machine from the inside of the front row on a very busy night at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval. Gruntz jumped out to an early lead, when Randy Hollingsworth – who started alongside – experienced some issues and dropped-off the pace and pulled to the infield pit lane.

Gruntz was having a strong run at the point and built-up nearly a half track's advantage, while about 7 others battled for position in his rear-view mirror. Dwight Brown – a former series champion, who was making his first start in a few years – moved into the 2nd spot, who Chad Strawn slipping into 3rd. The race had all the makings of a caution-free ride, but just as the leaders were closing on the backmarkers, a yellow flag flew for an issue in the 4th turn.

The leader had the entire field barking at his back bumper and despite a late race charge from Chad Strawn, he picked-up the checkered flag in the 2019 Ontario Modifieds Racing Series opener. Brown, John Baker Jr. and Nick Lees completed the top 5. Bob Franks, Rob Warnes, Brad Stevenson, Willow Barberstock, Alex Cuzilla, Rick Warnes and Hollingsworth rounded out the running order.

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series notebook: It was a tough opening night for Craig Scott. The driver of the #69 machine burned his arm early in the night and couldn't race. Luckily, former series champion Donny Beatty was on hand and offered to take over…but the car developed an oil leak and was sidelined for the night…Dwight Brown's return came with a new car number. Having used #2 in the past, his 2019 effort carried #61, in tribute to his stepfather, Bill Pickford…The #09 machine of Nick Lees recorded a 5th place finish on the night. A former Autumn Colours Classic winner, he'll share the seat with his twin brother Alex throughout the year…The series returns to action Saturday, June 22nd at Peterborough Speedway.
