RUTLAND, Vt. – The City of Rutland, Vt., will once again host the cars and stars of Devil's Bowl Speedway and the annual "Devil's Bowl Downtown" car show on Sunday, May 21. Stock car racing machines and local drivers will be on hand for the fun, free, and family-friendly event in the heart of Vermont's third-largest city, which coincides with the City's annual "Blessing of the Bikes" charity event.
The Devil's Bowl Downtown event is a favorite among fans of all ages. Speedway officials, the Downtown Rutland Partnership, and the Red Knights International Firefighters Motorcycle Club bring together motorcycle riders and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competitors from Devil's Bowl Speedway's 1/2-mile Asphalt Track and 3/10-mile Dirt Track for an exciting day of interaction with racing fans, gearheads, and newcomers.
The day begins at Rutland's newest restaurant, Ground Round Grill & Bar, coming soon to the site of the former Ponderosa Steakhouse on U.S. Route 7. Racecars are on display from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and then the show moves to Center Street and Merchants Row in Downtown Rutland at 11:00 a.m. Fans can see the cars up close, meet the drivers, and greet the Red Knights as they arrive around 12:30 p.m. for the annual Blessing of the Bikes. The Downtown portion of the show also offers dining, shopping, and entertainment options for everyone.
The show wraps up in dramatic fashion at 2:00 p.m., as the engines fire up and the city streets rumble with a parade of racecars. Best Appearing Car awards will be decided at the event, and all drivers who attend with their racecars will receive 10 bonus points toward the 2017 Devil's Bowl Speedway track championships. The car show will be followed by an open practice session on the Dirt Track at Devil's Bowl Speedway in West Haven – a short 20-minute drive from Downtown Rutland – from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Grandstand admission is free for the practice session, and pit passes are just $20.
"The Devil's Bowl Downtown car show is always one of our favorite events every year," Devil's Bowl Speedway media director Justin St. Louis said. "The fans really look forward to seeing the machines up close, and the drivers and teams love to spend time with their supporters. Plus, the sight of a pack of racecars roaring past the Paramount Theatre isn't something you get to see every day."
Devil's Bowl Speedway's 51st season of stock car racing action opens on Sunday, May 7, at 1:30 p.m. with the famed "Spring Green" event. The first-ever "Rutland County Rumble" on Saturday, May 13, features truck and tractor pulls and a demolition derby. Weekly stock car racing begins on Memorial Day weekend on May 27-28.
