2011-02-13 - NSS - RECAP

New Smyrna Beach, FLA - Joey Polewarczyk from Hudson, NH will go down in history as the first feature winner of the ACT Goodyear Speedweeks Cup in history.

Pole won the first of two 100 laps event being ran at New Smyrna Speedway as part of the Speed Weeks 2011 competition.  He was followed across the line by a pair of Quebec drivers, Patrick Laperle and Alex Labbé.

28 competitors showed up for the historic first time event, hauling from Quebec, Ontario, Vermont, New York, Mass, Rhode Island, Maine and New Hampshire.

ACT President and race director Tom Curley innovated at New Smyrna show casing qualifying heats – the tradition at the facility and “down south” is to run time trials to set the field.

Patrick Laperle who is a two-time vice Champion in the Crate / Late Models at New Smyrna was the first qualifying race winner.  He won over Brian Hoar and Jonathan Urlin.

In the second qualifying race, Wayne Helliwell was the winner.  Joey Laquerre and Karl Allard completed the podium.  Mike Bruno will go down in history as the first spin in competition and drawing a caution.

Patrick Hamel won the third race with Mark Lamberton and Pete Yetman finishing behind him.

When feature time rolled around, only 27 cars rolled onto the grid as Vermont driver Eric Chase was a scratch because of a faulty wheel bearing which was discovered on his way to the staging area.

Joey Pole started from the pole position and stretched an early lead  which vanished when the first caution was brought out on lap 34 for Austin Theriault who is stopped on the front stretch.

It was exactly what Patrick Laperle (second) and Eddie MacDonald now on his bumper.

Laperle took the lead away from Pole and built a nice lead over him.  Unfortunately, it was reduced to nothing when the caution was drawn on lap 41 for Joey Laquerre who hit the wall hard in turn 1.

“The frame is totalled.  Center section is bent in a diamond shape” said the elder and disapointed Laquerre.  “This was a brand new car.  Not even a race on it.  We’re packing up and going home” he added.

This is what he had to say when asked what happened: “I just got dumped into the wall by the 16 [Kevin Roberge]”.

Donald Theetge, the 2007 and 2009 ACT Castrol Champion, visited the pits under caution to make adjustments to the left front suspension to address handling issues.  He would return to competition and finish 10.

Pole and Laperle would exchange the lead several times over the next stretch of green flag.  Meanwhile MacDonald, Lamberton, Hoar and Bruno where batteling behind for third thru fifth.  MacDonald in an uncharacteristically ill handling race car was holding up the group.

“We had a terrible oil leak that would soak the right rear tire.  We are going to swap the engine over at a local shop” informed us Eddie MacDonald several hours after the feature.

On Lap 61 Patrick Hamel was spun onto the front stretch grass area when he was hit by behind by fellow countryman Kevin Roberge.

While we could not see what happened its now clear Hamel lifted when MacDonald lost momentarily control of his car.  Roberge going to the outside at the time did not lift and connected with Hamel sending him in a spin at the same time.

When the group returned to green flag, Pole continued to lead over Laperle.  But the duo now had a new dancing partner when young 17 year old Alex Labbé powered his around MacDonald, Lamberton and Hoar.

While Laperle managed to reel in Pole with 20 laps to go he did not have enough to pass him.  “Joey was strong.  Had a caution come out we would have had the outside and the outcome would be different” declared Laperle.

Man, that was some tough racing. I've got to thank Patrick (Laperle). He raced me so clean, it really seemed like it was just between us.

That was probably the hardest I've ever had to drive -- both on offense and on defense. It just goes to show how good the competition is in these cars. It was pretty cool from my point of view” declared Pole.

If the on track competition between Pole and Laperle was worth the price of admission, young 17 year old Alex Labbé, the 2010 Inside track Motorsport Magazine voter’s choice Promising Stock Car award winner, had a strong third place finish after having to go to a backup engine and missing the last two practice sessions.

“We didn’t expect such a good finish.  We took our time and did a great comeback from behind.  We weren’t the fastest car out there, but considering our engine issues we are very pleased with the results” said Labbé.

NAPA 200 PR - Danica Patrick participera au NAPA 200 au mois d'août (FRL)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Danica Patrick's 2011 NASCAR Schedule Announced

PATRICK TO COMPETE IN 12 NATIONWIDE SERIES RACES WITH JR MOTORSPORTS, INCLUDING MONTRÉAL

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Feb. 9, 2011) - Danica Patrick, the 28-year-old racer who transitioned into NASCAR Nationwide Series competition last year with JR Motorsports in the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet, has finalized her 2011 Nationwide Series plans.  JR Motorsports general manager Kelley Earnhardt, on behalf of the team and primary sponsor GoDaddy.com, announced those plans today.

Patrick's tour will closely resemble her rookie campaign in that she will compete in a cluster of races on the front and back ends of the Nationwide Series schedule. She will appear in select races during the middle parts of the year while competing full time in the IZOD IndyCar Series. Patrick's 2011 NASCAR plans feature 12 races across 10 NASCAR markets. Four of those markets will host Patrick for the first time in a stock car.

As announced last October, Patrick will compete in the first four Nationwide Series races - Daytona International Speedway (Feb. 19), Phoenix International Raceway (Feb. 26), Las Vegas Motor Speedway (March 5) and Bristol Motor Speedway (March 19).

Patrick will continue with races at Chicagoland Speedway (June 4), Daytona International Speedway (July 1), Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (Aug. 20), Richmond International Speedway (Sept. 9), and Kansas Speedway (Oct. 8). She will conclude her second NASCAR season with the final three races on the Nationwide Series schedule -- Texas Motor Speedway (Nov. 5), Phoenix International Raceway (Nov. 12) and Homestead-Miami Speedway (Nov. 19).

"This is going to be an exciting year in the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet," said Patrick, who scored a career-best fifth-place start and 19th-place finish in the 2010 finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. "I have a much different perspective heading into this season. I know a little more of what to expect, and I'm not as out of my element. I've had a year to work with my team, and there is a comfort level that comes with returning to some of these tracks. It's obvious experience goes a long way in this sport. Thanks to everyone at Go Daddy and JR Motorsports that have been incredibly supportive throughout this process."

Race tracks that were not on Patrick's 2010 schedule but among her 2011 plans are Bristol, Richmond, Kansas and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, which is located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Patrick has raced at Richmond and Kansas in the IZOD IndyCar Series. GoDaddy.com sponsors Patrick in both open-wheel and stock car racing.

"Danica is smart, she's beautiful and she's successfully competing in a male-dominated sport," said Bob Parsons, the company's CEO and founder. "To jump into a stock car and take on veteran NASCAR drivers is a testament to Danica's grit - our Go Daddy Girl is an undeniable inspiration for anyone who dreams big!"

GoDaddy.com, the world's largest Web hosting provider and top domain name registrar, will serve as primary sponsor for 11 of the 12 races with Patrick on the No. 7 Chevrolet. This season marks Patrick's fifth year as a Go Daddy Girl for the Internet powerhouse. For more information on Patrick and Go Daddy racing, visit www.GoDaddy.com/Danica.

TMR PR - Jared Marks Juggling School To Follow Racing Dreams

"Kicking Off 2011 Racing With Busy Schedule At New Smyrna"

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Florida (February 10, 2011) - - Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, Jared Marks found himself nose deep in the pressure of keeping a strong sophomore academic record alive at Napoleon High School. But starting Thursday and for nine additional nights, Marks will shift his focus to his passion of racing at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway for the 45th Annual World Series in the Super Late Model (SLM) and Crate Late Model (CLM) divisions respectively.

Though never having the opportunity to actual race at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway, Marks care of his Tony Marks Racing (TMR) team spent their off-season profusely getting the 16-year old development driver accustomed to the tricky short track's demeanor. In addition to his Late Model, Marks even tested the heavier 3,400-pound ARCA stock car, gathering a feel for the heavier machine as he'll take to the diverse tour later this season.

When the first green flag flies on Friday night, February 11th, Marks in his No. 5 Tony Marks Racing Dodge Charger looks for consistency and comfort to set the tone for the short track version of Speedweeks 2011 with crew chief Jamie Roulo on top of the box, calling the shots.

"Testing went well despite the rain we faced," offered Marks, a second-generation racer. "We gained a lot of knowledge during the test that I think will be useful for all nine days of competition."

The youngster also commented on working alongside his newest friend, Roulo. "I'm looking forward to having Jamie on our side at New Smyrna. I'm counting on him to critique me all the way around. I want to know when I'm doing something right and I definitely want to know when I'm doing something wrong. His help will only make me a better driver."

It's a big week for the Marks family. While Jared Marks is hoping to nestle into a comfortable presence at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway, his father Tony Marks will be eyeing a successful season opener in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, approximately 15 miles southwest of New Smyrna with his TMR teammate Maryeve Dufault.

"I'm really proud of everything my dad has accomplished in such a short time with TMR," continued the younger Marks, who himself tested competitively in an ARCA car at the 2.5-mile monster superspeedway last month. "He is a very busy guy, but he has really done a lot to not only support my racing career but help bring other drivers racing dreams come true. I hope it's going to be a good couple weeks for TMR."

Once the ARCA Racing Series season-opener is in the books, Jared Marks will have the solo support of his father at his side striving to make him proud by accomplishing his own personal goal.

"My goal is to survive all nine nights," Marked offered. "I want to look at the whole nine nights as one big race in both divisions. If we can finish all the races, than I will be extremely satisfied with our effort. Without a doubt, we are capable of winning and that's what I want to do for everyone at TMR, but I'm also trying to be realistic and not set the goals too high for myself. Focus is my determination and finishing will be my strength onto the next one (race)."

To further aid him in his trial and tribulations at New Smyrna, Jarit Johnson, brother of five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Jimmie Johnson and an avid race car driver himself will be on-hand to critique and steer Marks in the right direction.

"Jarit is just like one of us," Marks commented. "He's a great guy who wants to race. I am very thankful to him for caring so much about my racing career and program. He's definitely taught me some things over the last week or two and I know I will only continue to learn more as I converse with him."

For Johnson, himself a competitive racer, his early intuition of Marks reminds him a lot of himself.

"Jared is a good kid," said Johnson, who also hails starts in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. "I'm all about helping. Jared does a good job listening and asking questions and that is one of the necessities of being an up and coming driver. It should be a fun week at New Smyrna."

In addition to running a limited Late Model schedule this year across the Country, the Napoleon, Ohio native will also compete in a second part-time ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards entry for Tony Marks Racing tentatively set to liftoff from Salem (Ind.) Speedway on May 1, 2011.

About Tony Marks Racing (TMR):

drag racers, Dirt Late Models, SCCA Formula Fords, USAC F2000 Open Wheel and ARCA cars.  Tony personally raced until 2005 amassing numerous wins, championships and track records along the way until he  then changed his focus from driver to owner and began building racing programs for his children Jared (16 years old) and Rachel (13 years old).  Under the auspices of TMR, Jared began his racing career in 2002 in quarter midgets and now competes in late model, CRA, ASA and ARCA Series events while Rachel continues her development program racing quarter midgets and Bandoleros.

TMR has been at the forefront of charitable giving through its'  "Driving Against Hunger" and "Million Meal Challenge" race programs which have raised over $200,000 for Forgotten Harvest in 2010 at the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series events at Michigan International Speedway.

For the NASCAR events TMR along with TMT, Inc. partnered with Forgotten Harvest for the "Million Meal Challenge For Our Kids" which helps to bridge the hunger gap while schools are out of session and feeds 20,000 children per day in the Detroit metro area. Forgotten Harvest was significantly displayed on the entry of Chase Austin during both the Truck and Nationwide events at Michigan International Speedway along with logos of "Million Meal Challenge" sponsors Walgreen's, United Race Group, Holyfield's Choice Alka-Power Water and Vitamin Spice.  Evander
Holyfield was also instrumental in the challenge, acting as Grand Marshall for the August race and announcing his "Fight Against Hunger" on behalf of Forgotten Harvest.

As the first race team to "Drive Against Hunger" through their partnership with Forgotten Harvest, TMR plans to continue their alliance with Forgotten Harvest and once again "Drive Against Hunger" during the 2011 season.

ACT PR - Brillante prestation pour Alex Labbé

Pour diffusion immédiate (14-02-11 -03)

Goodyear speedweeks Cup à New Smyrna

ACT PR - Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. Takes Goodyear Speedweeks Cup Win on ACT's First Night at New Smyrna Speedway

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                         ACT-021311

New Smyrna, FL – Hudson, New Hampshire’s Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. continued his hot streak on the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) with a win in Sunday’s Goodyear Speedweeks Cup feature at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna, Florida. Polewarczyk had to hold off St-Denis, Quebec’s Patrick Laperle for the win.

After starting on the outside pole, Polewarczyk quickly jumped out to a large lead, while Laperle worked his way through the field from his ninth place starting position. A caution on lap 34 gave Laperle his first shot at Polewarczyk. The two battle for the lead before another caution came out on lap 41 for a hard hit into the front stretch wall by East Montpelier, Vermont’s Joey Laquerre.

Polewarczyk gained the advantage in the outside lane on the restart to claim the lead. The two would swap it again before Polewarczyk took over for good on lap 60. Laperle would get to the rear bumper of Polewarczyk several times as they worked their way through lap traffic in the final 40 laps.

Polewarczyk and Laperle were followed by Quebec’s Alex Labbe coming all the way from the 14th starting position. New Hampshire’s Wayne Helliwell, Jr. and New York’s Mark Lamberton completed the top five. Seven-time ACT Late Model Tour Champion Brian Hoar of Williston, Vermont took sixth followed by Massachusett’s Eddie MacDonald, Quebec’s Karl Allard, Ontario’s Jonathan Urlin and two-time Série Castrol Edge Champion Donald Theetge of Quebec completed the top ten.

Polewarczyk begins the 2011 year much like he left off in 2010. The 21 year old claimed three ACT Late Model Tour wins in 2010 along with the second ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire and the 48th Annual Milk Bowl at Thunder Road in Barre, Vermont, all with the new Ford powerplant.

The first of two ACT Goodyear Speedweeks Cup 100 lap events was completed in just over 50 minutes with just three cautions. There were four lead changes among two drivers. Twenty-seven of the twenty-eight cars that made the trip to the sunshine state took the green flag in the feature as Eric Chase had to scratch due to a wheel bearing.

Tomorrow’s (Monday, February 14) ACT Goodyear Speedweeks Cup 100 event will be lined up with an inversion of the top 20 from tonight’s finishing order. The overall Goodyear Speedweeks Cup winner will be decided by the overall lowest score based on the finish of the two 100 lappers. Post time for Monday’s event is 7:30. Listen to Dave Moody call the action on www.speed51.com.
