Départ de course en lion, puis fin frustrante pour Alex Labbé

 

 

St-Eustache, QC, le 11 septembre 2016 – Pilote le plus rapide lors des essais et parti de la pole après l'annulation de la session de qualification imposée par la pluie, Alex Labbé domina le premier tiers de la course Lucas Oil 250 à bord de sa Ford Can-Am/Kappa/Cyclops Gear/Lou's Barbeque n°32 avant qu'il se fasse rejoindre par le peloton rapide au 100e tour de piste.

 

Le reste de la course devint pour Alex une bataille ponctuée de plus de 20 changements de position parmi les six premiers en course. En abordant le dernier des 250 tours, Labbé fut frappé à l'arrière et envoyé en dérapage. Il traversa la ligne d'arrivée en 9e place, et suprêmement frustré.

 

Selon Alex, la journée avait bien commencé : « Nous avons corrigé un ou deux petits problèmes au début de la première session en piste, puis j'ai réussi le meilleur chrono, avec une machine rapide sur un ou deux tours mais aussi sur les longs relais d'une course – la situation idéale pour une course de cette longueur. Lorsque j'ai su que je partais de la pole et donc devant toute la meute, je croyais, comme toute l'équipe, que la course serait belle pour nous. »

 

Labbé roulait sans avoir à pousser sa machine à fond lors du premier tiers de la course, se permettant même de gérer ses pneus pour pouvoir retarder au maximum son second changement de pneus, prévu avec 35 à 40 tours à compléter. La pluie vint interrompre la course et forcer l'équipe à changer leur premier jeu de pneus au 75e tour, trop tôt selon la stratégie prévue. À la reprise, un groupe de sept ou huit pilotes rapides se mit à se frotter et se pousser, surtout aux virages 1 et 2. Alex sentit alors la voiture se dégrader juste assez pour le ramener dans ce peloton. « On se frappait, surtout les roues, ce qui dérègle les suspensions, et j'ai perdu un peu de mon avantage. Ca frottait très fort » de déclarer Alex après la course. Et comble de malheur, il se fait frapper au dernier tour et passe de la 4e à la 9e place au final.

 

Alex demeure cependant satisfait des performances de la voiture. « Nous étions dominant au début, puis la pluie et les incidents sont venus ruiner la sauce pour nous. Nous aurions pu utiliser un peu plus de chance. Je suis certaine que tout sera encore meilleur à Kawartha samedi soir prochain » d'ajouter le pilote.

Alex Labbé dominates early, then his luck turns at the end!

 

St-Eustache, QC, September 11, 2016 – With the quickest time of the first practice session, Alex Labbé found himself starting from pole position after qualifying was cancelled because of rain showers. Alex then dominated the first third of the Lucas Oil 250 aboard his Can-Am/Kappa/Cyclops Gear/Lou's Barbeque No 32 Ford, before the lead pack caught up with him around lap 100.

 

Alex' race turned into a constant battle from that point on, with more than 20 changes in position for the St-Albert driver amongst the eight lead drivers. Bad luck struck again when he was pushed off the track at the start of the last lap in the race, dropping from 4th to 9th at the end and leaving him and the team extremely frustrated.

 

According to Alex, the day promised a lot. "We had corrected a few small issues at the start of the first practice session, and then recorded the quickest time. The car was fast over a few laps, but also on a longer run, which is the ideal situation to be in for a long race like this one. When we found out we were on pole, the whole team was convinced that the race would turn out great for us."

 

From the start, Labbé could stay in front while still conserving his tires, to allow for a first tire change mid-race , and a second change late in the race for a strong finish. Unfortunately, the rain stopped the race on the 75th lap, forcing the team to change tires earlier than planned and leaving them with a very long mid-race relay before the planned second stop. 

 

The restart of the race launched an incredible fight with at least seven quick cars involved, and Alex changing positions at least eight times during the middle part of the race. That battle was not easy on the car: « We were rubbing bodies and hitting wheels pretty hard, which started to put my suspension out of ideal adjustment and slow me down, especially coming out of corners. By the end there, we were hitting each other pretty hard!" This tossing around ended when Alex was pushed off the track at the start of the last lap, dropping from 4th to 9th at the finish.

The great news is that the car was so good right from the start, as Alex said: "We were really right on the money from the start and things looked great for a top finish. Incidents and a little bad luck then ruined things for us, but the whole Jacombs Motorsport team and I are convinced that we will be great at Kawartha next Saturday night."

Labbé will be back at the wheel this coming Saturday, September 17th, for the Kawartha 200.

Durgan takes two-point lead entering Sunday asphalt finale

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Ron Proctor saved his best stuff for the end of the season at Devil's Bowl Speedway, winning the Heritage Family Credit Union 50 to open the Vermont 200 Weekend on Saturday, September 10.  After a one-hour rain delay, the two-time Asphalt Track champion posted his first victory of the year in a thrilling finish for the Bond Auto Parts Sportsman Modified division of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.

Travis Bruno led from the start and seemed to have a win in hand, but the race's only caution flag flew with six laps left and bunched the field for a restart.  Proctor, of Charlton, N.Y., was involved in a close fight for the runner-up spot with Jackie Brown Jr. for most of the race, but took the position away after the restart.

From there Proctor chased Bruno down and drove hard into Turn 3 on the outside lane just before the beginning of the final lap.  The pair ran side-by-side for the last half-mile of the race, leaning on each other coming to the checkered flag, and Proctor stole the win by about a foot at the finish line.  After leading all but the final few feet, Bruno was disappointed with the runner-up finish, but offered his congratulations to Proctor in victory lane.

Jason Durgan of Morrisonville, N.Y., battled with championship rival Vince Quenneville Jr. of Brandon, Vt., for fifth place for most of the event as both wrestled with their ill-handling racecars.  Durgan benefitted from the lap-44 restart to advance into third place.  Brown settled for fourth with Quenneville fifth.  The top 10 was completed by Jamy Begor, Billy Lussier, Chuck Bradford, Joey Roberts, and Codie Aubin.

Durgan was able to break out of a tie with Quenneville for the championship point lead entering Sunday's "Leon Gonyo Memorial" 50-lapper.  Quenneville gained two points on Durgan through qualifying heats, but Durgan earned four more that Quenneville in the feature race to take a slim two-point lead (780-778) – the difference of one on-track position in the finale.

In Sportsman Modified preliminary action, Addison, Vt.'s Chuck Bradford – the 2016 Rookie of the Year – won the "Shootout" for non-winners, and Anthony Warren of Shoreham, Vt., won the Mechanics Race.

It was a Germain family affair in the Rosen & Berger Auto Recyclers Renegades as R.J. Germain of Bristol, Vt. won the Shootout and his dad, Ray Germain, won the Mechanics Race.  Tony Salerno won the qualifying race.

The Portland Glass Mini Stocks were also in action with Garrett Given Sr. of Cornwall, Vt., taking the Shootout.  Andrew FitzGerald and Brad Bertrand won qualifying heats.

Fletcher, Vt.'s Stephanie Roberts – wife of Sportsman Modified driver Joey Roberts – won the eight-lap, ladies-only Mini Stock "Powder Puff" race in a wild finish that saw Sami Sargent get airborne in a spectacular crash as she tried to take second place; she was uninjured.  Pam Guptil finished second with Katelyn FitzGerald third.

Sunday, September 11 is a jam-packed, two-track day at Devil's Bowl Speedway.  The half-mile Asphalt Track fires up at 1:00 p.m., with the second 50-lap Sportsman Modified race, a 100-lap Late Model event, a Renegade 50, and 25 laps for the Mini Stocks; champions will be crowned in all divisions.  At 6:30 p.m., the 3/10-mile Dirt Track is in action with the "Vince Quenneville Sr. Memorial" presented by Interstate All Battery Center.  The two-event ticket package is just $25.00 for adults and free for kids age 12 and under.

AUDACE ET CONSTANCE POUR LOUIS-PHILIPPE DUMOULIN

St-Eustache, (Québec, Canada), le 11 septembre 2016 – C'est avec audace et constance que Louis-Philippe Dumoulin s'est hissé dans le top-3 hier au cours de cette épreuve de 250 tours, ponctuée de huit neutralisations et d'un arrêt de près d'une heure, provoqué par la pluie abondante sur le circuit ovale de l'Autodrome St-Eustache. Louis-Philippe Dumoulin a conduit la voiture #47 WeatherTech Canada/ Groupe Bellemare de la quatorzième à la troisième position lorsqu'un bris de suspension l'a forcé à entrer aux puits au 218e tour.


La journée s'est notamment déroulée à la merci des aléas météorologiques. Après avoir annulé la séance de qualifications, les officiels de la série NASCAR Pinty's ont devancé l'épreuve de 30 minutes. La grille de départ a été définie suivant les temps de la première séance d'essais. Ayant effectué plusieurs ajustements sur la voiture #47 WeatherTech Canada/ Groupe Bellemare pour la fin de course, cette décision a desservi Louis-Philippe Dumoulin qui a pris le départ en quatorzième position. Au 63e tour, les amateurs ont eu droit à un arrêt complet de la course. Ce n'est que 53 :18 minutes plus tard que les pilotes ont pu retourner en piste.

 

« Le programme sur circuit ovale est performant, nous l'avons prouvé de nouveau. La stratégie d'arrêt aux puits définie avec Billy Burns, chef d'équipe, et les équipiers, a été efficace et tout était en place pour terminer en force. A l'instant même où nous étions en troisième position, une pièce de suspension s'est cassée. Avec 40 tours à faire, cela n'était pas suffisant pour la réparer. La voiture #47 WeatherTech Canada/ Groupe Bellemare s'améliore de plus en plus et c'est très encourageant pour le futur », partage Louis-Philippe Dumoulin.

Rookie Wins Lucas Oil 250 at St. Eustache for Third Win

ST. EUSTACHE, Que. – Sometimes a driver needs a good car and a good call by his crew chief to win a race.

 

Cayden Lapcevich got that and more Saturday at Autodrome St. Eustache to win the Lucas Oil 250. The 16-year-old's third win of the season also moved the Grimsby, Ontario, driver one step closer to winning the 2016 NASCAR Pinty's Series championship.

 

The rookie was the last driver to pit for tires on Lap 213 and that decision by his dad and crew chief Jeff Lapcevich paid off.

 

The younger Lapcevich restarted seventh and quickly moved up through the field and took the lead on Lap 241.

 

After contact between Jason Hathaway and Labbe in Turn 3 brought out the caution flag to set up the green-white-checkered finish, Lapcevich held off veteran D.J. Kennington and Mark Dilley to the checkered flag.

 

With the victory and Andrew Ranger's eighth-place finish, Lapcevich will carry a 41-point lead over Ranger entering the season finale at Ontario's Kawartha Speedway next weekend. Lapcevich can become the youngest series champion in the history of NASCAR series by starting the race at Kawartha.

 

While Lapcevich ended up celebrating in Victory Lane, it appeared during the second half of the race either Kennington or Dilley would end long winless droughts and celebrate a win.

 

Kennington, a two-time series champion who hasn't won since 2013, led a race-high 90 laps and appeared to be the car to beat before the late cautions. Dilley, who last won in 2011, led 24 laps and finished third. Adam Martin fourth and Alex Tagliani rounding out the top five.

 

Larry Jackson, Gary Klutt, Ranger, Labbe and Jason Hathaway completed the top 10.

 

Alex Labbe started on the pole after rain washed out qualifying and the field was set per the rulebook. Labbe and Kevin Lacroix traded the lead during the first 57 laps of the race.

 

Kennington passed Labbe for the lead on Lap 57 and Labbe retook the lead before rain brought out the red flag on Lap 62 for nearly an hour.

 

Once the race resumed, Labbe led until Dilley passed him for the top spot on Lap 108.  

 

The Lucas Oil 250 will air TSN, Sunday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m. ET, and also on RDS, Friday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. ET.

 

The Kawartha 250 will complete the 2016 season for the NASCAR Pinty's Series on Saturday, Sept. 17.
