Salute to Hall of Famer Homer Drew highlights Racin' Preview 2010 at Portland Expo February 19-20

Portland, ME – Legendary Maine racer Homer Drew will be the focus of an extensive Maine Vintage Race Car Association display at Northern New England’s biggest and best wintertime stock car racing showcase, Racin’ Preview 2010, set for Friday and Saturday, February 19-20 at the Portland Exposition Building on Park Street (U.S. Route 1).

Drew, a Raymond native who passed away shortly after his two Hall of Fame inductions, is considered to be Maine’s greatest stock car racer ever by most observers fortunate enough to witness his incredible talent behind the wheel of an oval track machine – no matter what kind of car, or what racing surface was under it. Drew was one of twelve inaugural inductees into the Maine Racing Hall of Fame. He had previously been inducted into the prestigious New England Auto Racers (NEAR) Hall of Fame.

At least four restored racecars instrumental in the long legacy left behind by Drew will be on display at the Portland oval track showcase. The legendary P-38 cutdown Drew campaigned for fellow Maine Racing Hall of Famer Bob Bushley of Windham – the car legend says he steered to victory lane on the dirt at Beech Ridge Speedway in Scarborough with vice grips guiding him after the steering wheel broke – will be among the cars displayed, as will one of the most revered cars in the history of Maine racing on asphalt tracks, the J-2 Camaro then-owned by another Maine Hall of Famer, Jerry Seavey of Windham, which Drew dominated the 1973 Getty Open series at Bob Bahre’s Oxford Plains Speedway against unmatched fields of talented racers in that era, or perhaps any since. Portland firefighter and Maine vintage race car guru Steve Pellerin of Gorham quarterbacked efforts to restore the Drew bookend racecars.

The salute to legendary Maine racing Hall of Famer Homer Drew joins displays from most of the premiere racetracks and touring series competing throughout New England at the region’s only off-season show dedicated to oval track racing. The vast majority of racetracks and touring series operating throughout Maine and New Hampshire will be represented at the annual celebration, with hundreds of door prizes including dozens of free race event tickets to be handed out to lucky show ticketholders.

The extensive historical display by the MVRCA will be joined by dozens of current racecars in competition throughout Northern New England, including NASCVAR Whelen All-American Series tracks like Scarborough’s Beech Ridge Motor Speedway and New Hampshire’s Lee USA Speedway along with many independent tracks from throughout the tri-state area.

Doors at the Portland Expo open at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19, with several autograph opportunities and other activities ongoing through 10:00 p.m. Saturday show hours are 9:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A limited amount of commercial display space remains available.

Indianapolis (Jan. 26, 2010) –The FAZZT Race Team has taken the initial steps into creating a development program with the signing of Canadian Maryeve Dufault.

“As we continue to build the FAZZT Race Team programs we have an incredible amount of support from Canadian companies for our Canadian driver and team,” explained team COO Jim Freudenberg. “When the opportunity arose to meet Maryeve and discuss supporting and developing her racing career we saw it as a great opportunity for our team and partners to continue to develop racing talent from Canada . Her racing skill and understanding of the commercial side of racing combined with her marketability make her a great teammate for Alex and FAZZT. ”

Maryeve, a native of Sorel, Quebec, has an extensive racing background in the ladder series including karting, Formula Jim Russell, Skip Barber, Formula BMW, Star Mazda and a stint testing for Formula 3 in England. “I am a racer and from a very young age I loved the rush of adrenaline I got from racing,” said Maryeve. “And don’t let the feminine side of me fool you, I am very competitive and I am in racing to win.” Maryeve is currently driving in the Rotax International Karting Series and continuing to develop her racing skills.

Maryeve came to the attention of FAZZT Race Team driver Alex Tagliani during her racing in the Rotax International Series. “Maryeve is a very talented driver who is driven by her commitment to the sport,” said Alex. “We are looking forward to having her as a part of the FAZZT Race Team and hope that we can play a part in continuing to develop her skills and talent as a driver.”

Canadian Motorsports Expo - Day 1

The first day at the Canadian Motorsports Expo is over. The CME is being held at the International Centre of Toronto.

After a long ride from home to the show, many hours of work to put the kiosk together, the results are worth it and make us real proud.

We have an amazing location just next to the Hendrick Motorsports booth where you can see the cars of Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Below is a slideshow of day 1.

Waterbury, VT – The Série ACT Castrol event scheduled for Capital City Speedway in Ottawa, ON has been canceled and will not be rescheduled in 2010.

“There was a change in management over the past month, and since the previous lessee had scheduled the event for June 12, 2010 we have carried it on our schedule since last November. The new management has decided to step away from the touring type events and we will respect that decision,” said Darla Hartt, Vice President and Director of Administration for the American Canadian Tour which has sanctioned races at the speedway for the past three seasons.

In a related story, it was agreed that the Late Model division at Capital City will continue to operate as an ACT affiliate track. The Late Model rules follow the ACT regional universal rule business model.

“We were happy to find out that ‘Cap City’ will continue on with the Late Model formula we have been working on in recent years,” said Tom Curley, President of ACT. “We will include the track’s competitors in our overall ACT program, including the ACT Invitational at the New Hampshire Speedway on September 18, 2010. We are very hopeful that the ACT Castrol Series will return to Capital City Speedway in 2011.”

The popular Quebec Series will open the 2010 season at the Autodrome Ste. Eustache outside Montreal on Saturday, May 22, 2010, with the first of a scheduled 11 Championship events throughout Quebec.

Kyle Busch, David Reutimann and Regan Smith to race at Delaware on July 7

London, ON (January 15, 2010): The first annual “Delaware Summer Showdown” will take place the evening of Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Delaware Speedway, near London, Ontario. The event will feature current NASCAR Sprint Cup Stars, Kyle Busch, David Reutimann and Regan Smith competing against the best drivers from Delaware Speedway’s weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.

Recent Delaware Speedway champions from the APC NASCAR Late Model division, such as Steve Robblee, Jesse Kennedy, Scott Lindsay and DJ Kennington will lead an elite field into this unprecedented showcase event.

“It will be a privilege to have them (Busch, Reutimann and Smith) come up, to introduce them to Delaware and to find out what they’re about,” said Robblee, a 9-time Delaware Speedway Champion and current NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Canadian National Champion. “I think it will be a good deal for Delaware and its competitors. I don’t see how we can go wrong.  The fans are in for a treat.”

Kennington, who has competed against Busch and Smith in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, is looking forward to having those drivers come north. “For me it’s gonna be awesome because they get to kick my butt every week down there (in the United States) and we hope this will even out the playing field a little.”

The excitement over the event has even caused a “rift” in the house of Ron Sheridan, one of Delaware Speedway’s most popular and competitive drivers over the last ten years. “My son Jake says he doesn’t know who to cheer for now because he’s a Kyle Busch fan,” laughed Sheridan. “But I think it’s great. It’s very exciting. It’s great for the racers, great for the speedway and great for the fans.”

An exhibition (non-points) event, the “Delaware Summer Showdown” will see Busch, Reutimann and Smith compete in a 35-lap feature race against an elite field of Delaware Speedway competitors. The NASCAR Stars will drive in the same Late Model-style car as the Delaware Speedway drivers.

Specifics about the event format and driver qualification (including the possibility of competitors from other tracks to participate) will be announced separately.

As for whether or not the NASCAR Sprint Cup stars will adjust to both the Late Model-style car and the race track itself – which is renowned in stock-car circles for being a little tricky to navigate – Delaware’s top drivers don’t seem to be concerned.

“I don’t think it’ll be a big deal for them,” said Robblee. “They grew up racing cars like that. I’m sure they’ve driven lots of late model cars.”

Asked if they’re ready to take on some of NASCAR’s best, Kennington was quick to respond: “Game on.”

Regarding the visiting drivers:

Many know Kyle Busch as a brash, outrageously talented and outspoken competitor. Perhaps NASCAR’s fastest rising star, he is a driver whom many fans love to hate for his hot temper mixed with magic on the track. Busch is thee only NASCAR driver to win races in two of its national touring series on the same day, winning the Camping World Truck Series and Nationwide Series races held on February 21, 2009.

Currently driving for Joe Gibbs racing, Busch won five races at NASCAR’s highest level in 2009 including one of the Daytona “Duel” events in Florida as well as wins at Richmond, Las Vegas and both races at Bristol which, like Delaware Speedway, is a half-mile oval.

“They’re the same as we are,” Kennington said of Busch, Reutimann and Smith. “Kyle’s actually a really funny guy, really down to earth. It will be cool to have him here.”

David Reutimann is a Florida native, and a third generation driver who races for Michael Waltrip in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and for Braun Racing in the Nationwide Series. He drives the #00 in Sprint Cup, the same number used by his father, Emil “Buzzie” Reutimann during his driving career. He was the Truck Series’ Rookie of the Year in 2004, won his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pole Award in 2008 and earned his first Sprint Cup victory in May of 2009 in a rain-shortened event at Charlotte. He ended the season in 16th place in championship points.

Regan Smith began his NASCAR career racing in the Craftsman Truck Series in 2002 and moved to the Busch (now known as Nationwide) Series full-time in 2006. Last year, Smith ran in 20 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. However, he has a lot to look forward to in 2010 as Furniture Row Racing has announced that it will run the full 36-race schedule with Regan Smith at the wheel. Smith’s crew chief, Ryan Coniam, is from Burlington, Ontario.

“What pleases us most about this event is the opportunity to showcase the competitors that have supported Delaware Speedway for so long, and to give their loyal fans a great show,” said track General Manager, Joe Czernai. “We are committed to building awareness of our NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and its competitors and creating added value for the many corporate partners that help keep the race teams coming to the track each week. We believe this is another step in the right direction.”

“This is a sign of how far the speedway has come,” Sheridan said. “I love the format of a Wednesday night race. It’s gonna be a fun day. It’s going to be great for the speedway.”

General admission tickets for the event will soon be available online at www.delawarespeedway.com and will also be available at Delaware Speedway’s display at the CPT Racing Experience trade show, this Saturday and Sunday (January 16 and 17) at the Western Fair Agriplex, as well as at the track’s display at the Canadian Motorsports Expo in Toronto, January 22 – 24, 2010.

More information about Delaware Speedway is available online at www.delawarespeedway.com, through the track’s new Official Facebook Group or via Twitter “@DelawareSpdwy”.

Hoar currently holds the record for the most career wins in ACT Late Model Tour history with 25, including back-to-back wins at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway and Waterford Speedbowl in 2010.  These wins, plus 11 top tens in 13 starts, helped Hoar edge out runner-up Scott Payea. Brian Hoar - 6 time ACT Champion

Jean-Paul Cyr - First Thunder Road title

The 41st Annual MacTavish Award was given to New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) for their contribution to Northeast stock car racing. The prestigious MacTavish Award is named for legendary New England racer Don MacTavish who was killed in 1969 while racing at Daytona International Speedway. In 2010, NHMS hosted the first annual ACT Invitational, which invited 36 of the best Late Model competitors from around the region. It was the showcase event for ACT Late Model competition during the 2010 season.

Thunder Road International Speedbowl crowned Milton’s Jean-Paul Cyr as the 2009 50th Anniversary Season “King of the Road.” The seven-time ACT Late Model Tour Champion took a break from the touring scene in 2009 and set his sights on the 50th Anniversary Season title. He joined forces with car owner Joey Laquerre and crew chief Jeff Laquerre. Cyr used his Times Argus Mid-Season Championship win to beat “Senator” Phil Scott for the championship.

The NAPA Tiger Sportsman title went to Williamstown’s Jimmy Hebert in just his third season. Hebert also scored the first feature win of his career in 2009. The 2009 Tiger Sportsman Tri-State Series Championship was won by Morrisonville, New York’s Shawn Duquette. Duquette tied Jason Bonnett for the title, but used his two victories to win the tie breaker. Veteran Gary Mullen of Tunbridge took the top Allen Lumber Street Stock honors. Donnie Yates of North Montpelier won the Power Shift Junkyard Warriors title.

Over $85,000 plus trophies were awarded to the top teams in all divisions of Thunder Road and the ACT Tours for their efforts during the 2009 season.

The second annual ACT Crew Chief of the Year Award went to John Doiron. Doiron was the crew chief for his son, Joey, who won the ACT Rookie of the Year Award for 2009. John was recognized for his hard work, dedication, enthusiasm and attitude on the ACT Tour and the continual improvement of the Berwick, Maine Doiron race team.

A new award was created this year in memory of Pete Hartt, who covered the American-Canadian Tour and Thunder Road during his time with WDEV Radio and as the sports editor for the Times Argus. The Pete Hartt Memorial Media Award was presented to WCAX sports anchor Seth Leavitt for his support of regional stock car racing.

Troy Germain, “The Voice of ACT” from St. Johnsbury received the Ken Squier Award. Germain was presented the award for his hard work and dedication as the ACT Tour and Thunder Road announcer.

The Gordon R. Nielsen Rookie Achievement Award went to Hyde Park’s Tucker Williams. Williams is the 2009 Allen Lumber Street Stock Rookie of the Year and led the division with four wins. His first career feature win came on opening day of 2009 in his first feature start. Other rookies that qualified for the award were from the ACT Tour, Joey Doiron of Berwick, Maine along with Thunder Road Late Models, Dylan Smith from Randolph and NAPA Tiger Sportsman, Erik Steel of Barre.

Sportsmanship and Most Improved driver awards were presented for all divisions based on driver and official voting. ACT Late Model Tour winners were Chip Grenier of Graniteville for the Sportsmanship Award and Graniteville’s John Donahue for Most Improved. Thunder Road Late Model awards went to Brooks Clark from Fayston for Sportsman and Cambridge’s Craig Bushey for Most Improved. The Thunder Road Sportsman awards were presented to Wolcott’s Brendan Moodie for Sportsmanship and Bradford’s Derrick O’Donnell for Most Improved.

The Ed Carroll Memorial Award for Sportsmanship in the Street Stocks was awarded to Craftsbury’s Mike Martin. The Junkyard Warrior Sportsmanship Award was given to Cabot’s Ken Christman.

The 2010 ACT Late Model Tour season will kick off on Sunday, April 18 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH. Thunder Road will open its gates for the first time on Sunday, May 2 for the 12th annual Merchants Bank 150.
