Vernold casts off sophomore jinx, gets 1st Airborne win

Branham, Terry, Rivers also carry checkers

SOUTH PLATTSBURGH – Kris Vernold of Kingsbury, the 2011 Airborne Modified Rookie of the Year, broke out of a season-long slump with a hard-fought victory in the Ernie’s Discount Tools 30-lap Modified main event.

Vernold held up under a strong charge from Pat McGrail after a caution flag on lap 21 wiped out his 10 car-length lead. McGrail, second in points on the year, was glued to Vernold’s Emcor Services No. 97 the rest of the way, but he chose not to force the issue.

Adam Bartemy finished third after contesting the lead for the first half of the race. Vernold started on the pole and led every lap, sometimes by the width of a wheel. Aaron Bartemy rallied late for fourth – one spot ahead of point leader Todd Stone.

“I used up a little track at the end,” Vernold admitted, “but he (McGrail) has an excellent car and I wanted this one bad. We got a little lucky at times last year. This year it’s been all bad. We had a broken rear end last week.”

George Foley, Greg Atkins, Andy Heywood, Todd Ormsby and Patrick Dupree finished 6-10. Dupree had to roll out a back-up car after losing a transmission in qualifying.

Bucko Branham benefitted from a late caution that brought him within striking distance of Shawn Duquette with two laps remaining in the J&S Steel Limited Late Model feature. He took the lead a lap later and went to win for the fifth time this season. Duquette was second, followed by Danny Sullivan, Robin Wood and Dave Rabtoy.

Renegade Josh Terry of Morrisonville landed his Smithfield Liquor/Adirondack Transmission No. 43 in victory lane for the third time after getting tested by his brother Tylor (2nd) for 15 laps. Joe Warren beat Lance Rabtoy to the line by a foot to claim third-place. Jason McClatchie completed the top five.

Erick Sayles took advantage of the extra-distance 25-lap Busch Mini Modified feature to post his 5th win.  After the normal 15 laps, Sayles sat sixth, but a restart on lap 17 improved his chances and he took the lead from Josh Lavarnway a lap later. Rob Clark wound up second. Jayson Criss, Ty Drown and Josh LaPorte finshed 3-4-5.

Lonnie Rivers of Cadyville tightened up the Adirondack Water Sportsman Modified title chase with his third win, besting Travis Bruno, point leader Nick Heywood, Joe Daniels and Jessey Meuller.

Airborne hosts the Limited Late Model “4-20’s” event which combines the results of four 20-lap sprints with inverted fields - event No. 5 in the six-race USA/Canada Masters Series - Saturday, August 4.

Finale : 1-Joey Saldana #9, 2-James McFadden #55X, 3-Craig Dollansky #7, 4-Cody Darrah #4, 5-Kraig Kinser #11K

Austin Theriault Battles to Rain Shorten Win at Beech Ridge

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                                            ACT-072812

Scarborough, ME – Fort Kent, ME’s Austin Theriault secured his first career American Canadian Tour win in a rain shortened event at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, ME on Saturday, July 28. Theriault and his Pelletier Ford Ford Fusion battled with last year’s Beech Ridge ACT winner Jeff Taylor of Farmington, ME for the majority of the event and came out on top just before the fourth and final caution flew on lap 112 due to rain. Jay, ME’s Dave Farrington, Jr. had a career day and completed the all Maine and all Ford podium.

Twenty-nine American Canadian Tour Late Models took the green flag with the threat of rain looming over head. Taylor jumped to the lead from the pole position but not without Theriault all over his back bumper. Sporadic sprinkles of rain began around the lap 20 mark and Theriault decided to make his move, taking the lead on lap 26. The 18 year old Theriault broke out to a straight away lead and began picking off lap traffic until the first caution flew on lap 69.

Theriault’s day was nearly ruined as two cars spun coming off turn four directly in front of the leader. After narrowly avoiding both spinning cars and the front stretch wall, Theirault regained the top spot for the restart. With the outside line being the preferred lane, Taylor and Theriault would swap the lead back and forth over the next two cautions on lap 82 and 108.

Theriault took the lead for the final time on lap 108 and just four laps later the skies opened up, ending the race at lap 112 and making Theriault the third different first time ACT winner of 2012. Taylor and Farrington were followed to the line by another Ford in the way of Turner, ME’s Glen Luce and eight-time ACT Champion Brian Hoar rounded out the top five.

ACT point leader Wayne Helliwell, Jr., Brent Dragon, TJ Brackett, Eddie MacDonald and Rowland Robinson, Jr. completed the top ten. All twenty-nine starters were on the track for the finish. The event was completed in 57 minutes and 5 seconds with four cautions, the final one coming out for rain. A total of 35 ACT Late Models attempted to qualify for the event.

Theriault punches his ticket to the fourth annual Bond Auto ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 22. He joins Brian Hoar, Wayne Helliwell, Jr., Nick Sweet, Ben Ashline, Karl Allard, Jean-Francois Dery, Patrick Laperle, Donald Theetge and Oxford 250 winner Joey Polewarczyk, Jr.

The American Canadian Tour has next weekend off before heading to Sanair Super Speedway in St-Pie, Quebec. ACT’s sister series, ACT Tour (US) and Série ACT Castrol, will tackle Sanair in a combination 100 lap event for the first time since 2006.

Laperle Shines at Autodrome St-Eustache

Dery, Allard Charge to Podium Finishes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                           ACT – 072812

St-Eustache, QC – Defending Serie ACT Castrol Champion Patrick Laperle surged for his second win of 2012 at his home track of Autodrome St-Eustache (QC) on Saturday, July 28th. Laperle had to fend off former champion Karl Allard in the closing laps, as well as point leader Jean-Francois Dery who was spoiled in search of his third win in a row on the Serie ACT Castrol.

Blainville, QC’s Jonathan Bouvrette lead the field to the green and ran away away after a brutal wreck off the start that claimed the car of Gaetan Gaudrealt. Bouvrette’s lead was short-lived, however, as his mirror was filled with two-time Serie ACT Castrol Champion Donald Theetge, who dove underneath to steal the lead on lap 15.

Laperle methodically worked his way through the field from the 12th starting position, and found himself in a duel with Theetge after a lap 55 caution period. Laperle bested his rival, flying to the lead to the cheers of the hometown crowd. He momentarily lost the lead to Allard on lap 63, but gained it back to drive to a series-leading seventh career victory at Autodrome St-Eustache. Laperle left only eight of the nineteen-car starting line up on the lead lap.

Laperle sealed the win over Allard by just .591 seconds, who had his hands full with third-place Dery. Sainte-Croix’s Patrick Hamel took fourth, and Patrick Hamel rounded out the top five. Theetge, Stephane Descoste, Dany Trepanier, Gaetan Lauzier, and Yannick Tremblay completed the top ten.

The 200-lap event was completed in 1 hour 39 minutes and 13 seconds, and was slowed by 10 cautions.

Laperle has already been invited to the Bond Auto ACT Invitiational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on September 22.

Serie ACT Castrol returns to action this Friday night at Autodrome Chaudiere in Vallee-Jonction, QC for the Chaudiere 150. Post time is 7:25pm.

NASCAR's Matt Crafton Enters Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway

For Immediate Release:

Thursday, July 19, 2012

; Tickets on Sale at Indianapolis Menards Stores

(TOLEDO, Ohio) - NASCAR veteran Matt Crafton will make the fifth ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards start of his career in next Friday's Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.

Crafton, who has started 281 consecutive races in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series dating back to 2000, will drive the No. 88 Messina Wildlife Management/Menards Toyota for ThorSport Racing, joining teammate Frank Kimmel, driver of the No. 44 Ansell/Menards entry. The number on Crafton's ARCA car will match that on his ThorSport truck, the No. 88 Menards Toyota.

The California native will hope to bounce back from a 32nd-place finish in last year's race at Lucas Oil, when he exited after just 75 of 203 laps. He will look to recapture the success he had in an ARCA car in 2010, when he finished in the top five at both Toledo and Iowa Speedways.

Crafton is currently sixth in Truck Series points, and actually has 11 Truck Series races under his belt at the 0.686-mile Lucas Oil Raceway. Last year, he finished sixth to follow up on a career-high third in 2010.

Crafton's opportunity to race in the ARCA Racing Series is a result of the overall Menards Racing vendor program in ARCA, and part of the business relationship between sponsors Messina Wildlife Management and Menards. Crazy Horse Racing Teams Ready To Prove Their Mettle At Oxford

39th Annual TD Bank Oxford 250

A 'Crazy' Time Of Year

SOUTH PARIS, Maine – If there's one thing Travis Stearns points to this year, it's just how consistent his race cars have been in weekly competition at Oxford Plains Speedway.

With a pair of wins, five Top-5s and no finish worse than sixth in seven races this season, Stearns has a 31-point lead over the rest of the field as the Late Model world descends upon Oxford for this weekend's 39th annual TD Bank Oxford 250. Practice is on Saturday and Sunday, with qualifying set for 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon and the main event in the evening.

Stearns is as excited about this weekend's edition of the prestigious short-track race as he has been about any prior.

“I've felt pretty good before, but I've had nothing to really show for it. The car's just a lot better now,” said Stearns, who has qualified for the race three years in a row with a career-best finish of 10th in 2009. “We have a good car, period. It's something I'm not really used to coming into this race.”

Part of the reason for Stearns' success has been a new Crazy Horse Racing chassis that he's using. Built over the off-season, he's noticed the benefits immediately. The biggest thing has been the car's consistency over long runs, something that should set up nicely for Sunday's 250-lap event.

Mickey Green, who not only builds cars at Crazy Horse Racing alongside Mitch Green but is also Austin Theriault's crew chief on the ACT Late Model Tour, said that kind of consistency was the goal when the company set out in designing its 2012 chassis.

“I don't think they fall off as much,” Green said. “They may not all go out and run the quickest lap times – but they don't drop off. Look at Travis – everyone thinks he's so much faster than everybody else, but he's not. He's just staying more consistent throughout the race. When everyone else starts dropping off, he's still running roughly the same lap times.”

Theriault will debut his new car this weekend, after testing at Oxford Plains last week and then running Saturday night's 40-lap Late Model feature. He started deep in the 24-car field and finished third – despite not deciding to really “race” other cars until several laps into the event.

He, like Stearns, thinks he's in the best position he's been in to challenge for a TD Bank 250 win. He finished third last season – the youngest podium finisher in the race's history.

“Most people that have met (Mitch and Judy Green), they know that they're great people to work with,” Theriault said. “When they give you their word that they're going to have a car ready, they're going to be ready. We worked right down to the wire – even had some all-nighters on this car. I think it's really paid off.

“I sort of feel sorry for the competition. It's way better than the other car was at Oxford.”

“The biggest thing is that the balance is so good on it,” Stearns said. “With my old car, the littlest thing – miss the stagger by a quarter of an inch, or going from day into night – would take it from being a fifth place car to to being a 25th-place car, and it was awful. It was a completely different animal. This thing here, it slows it up with little changes – but it only goes from a car that can win to being a Top-5 car.”

Last year's Oxford Plains Speedway Rookie of the Year, Chris Coolidge, has posted a pair of career-best second-place finishes in weekly competition at the track this season. Coolidge knows that there are plenty of obstacles to overcome just to qualify for the starting field on Sunday, but he's also extremely happy with the way his No. 72 has performed in the first half of the season.

After not qualifying for the TD Bank 250 as a rookie, he's eager to make the starting grid this time around.

“Last year we tried to qualify in our first year. We had fun and we were competitive, but we just didn't have the luck,” Coolidge said. “We're going to attempt it this year, and this car's going really good thanks to Mitch and Mickey and Crazy Horse and all those guys there. But the key to the 250 is the luck of the draw – that's the biggest key right there.”

Mickey Green hopes the luck is on Crazy Horse Racing's side when it comes to late evening on Sunday. It would be a huge win for a company that really only took off two years ago, once it moved into its new shop in South Paris – just a few miles down the road from Oxford Plains Speedway.

“If we don't run well, then there's something wrong. I'm very confident going into the weekend,” Green said. “These cars just don't fall off, and it's a big thing.

“Winning the 250 is huge. Just huge. Other car builders have won them – and if we could do it in our second year with our own design, that would be huge just huge for us. I'm not going to say it would put us on the map, but it would be a really big deal for us as a group.”
