Turning Up the Saturday Night Heat at Peterborough Speedway

Turning Up the Saturday Night Heat at Peterborough Speedway

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

On the opening weekend of the summer, the temperature reached near 30 degrees Celsius and the action on the track was as hot as the thermometer as Canada's Toughest 3rd Mile Oval hosted the 2022 edition of the Autism Awareness Night, in support of www.cnaf.net

First off-the-mark was a 20 lap 'A' main for the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock division that saw Sean Kennedy and Angelo Novis lead the field to the green flag. Kennedy showed no signs of a mechanical issue that limited his practice time as he took an early lead, with Jake Kelly in tow. A yellow flag near the halfway mark slowed the pace and gave the rest of the pack time to plan their attack of the leaders. Brad Lavalle moved into the runner-up spot on the restart, bringing a hard-charging Steve Finnegan along for the ride. Try as he might, Kennedy couldn't hold Finnegan at bay but he did manage to maintain his streak of top 5 finishes, with a 2nd place effort. Lavalle, Kelly and Novis were next across the line.

Bailey Jacobs and Marlie Owen brought the KOD Disposal Super Stock teams from the staging area for their feature tilt. As soon as the pack crossed the start-finish line, it was like Jacobs had been shot out of a gun. His No. 60 ride – carrying new sponsorship from Beachwood Resort – was on rails as he led every lap in the caution-free run. Owen – who recently graduated with a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Carleton University – was 2nd, with Mark Gordon, Brandon Feeney and Paul Boundy next across the stripe.

With Chris Tubman and Shawn Solomon leading the way, the Jiffy Lube Mini Stocks headed for the green flag to kick-off their 20 lap feature. Solomon – the 2021 Bone Stock track champion who moved to the Mini Stocks during the off-season – took an early lead from the outside line. He was still in control of things as the field started to work through slower traffic with 8 laps on the scoreboard. Not even a yellow flag near the halfway mark could slow his charge as Solomon took the win over Tubman. Sunset Speedway regular Johnny Paradzinski, who was taking advantage of a night off at his home track was 3rd. Tyler Junkin and Brock Baker completed the top 5.

Former series champion Rob Warnes and rookie of the year hopeful Shane Pollock started on the front row as the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series tour, presented by GEN-3 Electrical marked its Peterborough Speedway return. Warnes took the lead early, with Pollock looking to steal the spot. Ben Gruntz moved into the runner-up position as the laps clicked away. The No. 95 machine was flawless at the front of the field, while spots were swapped behind him. At the checkered flag, Warnes claimed his first Peterborough win since 2016, with Gruntz, Tyler Bouillon, Pollock and Chad Strawn rounding out the top 5.

Bobby Cousineau and Steve Powell were on the front row for the home track Late Model 25 lap feature. From the drop of the green flag, it was an event that kept fans on the edge of their seats. In his first start of the year, Derek Lynch moved into the runner-up position and chasing new leader James Townsend, while Dan McHattie showed the strength of his new ride. After running green for 24 laps, a late race caution flag changed the overall picture. McHattie took his second straight victory, with Powell, Cousineau, Jacob Mercer and Tyler Junkin completing the top 5.

13 starters took the green flag in the Qwick Wick Fire Starter Can-Am Midget main event. The 25 lapper ran caution free, with Jeff Blackburn taking the win. Full race details can be found at www.canammidgets.com

Sean Kennedy had a pair of Bone Stock heat wins, with Jake Kelly and Brad Lavalle taking the others. Mark Gordon and Brandon Feeney each had a preliminary round Super Stock win, while Tyler Junkin took a couple of Mini Stock victories. Defending track champion Jeremy Kelly and Ember Junkin shared the others. Dan McHattie and Bobby Cousineau split the Late Model opening rounds. Jeff Blackburn and Cory Whittam each scored a Can Am Midgets qualify heat, while Alex Cuzzilla and Chad Strawn had a pair of Ontario Modifieds Racing Series qualifier wins a piece.

All finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review as well as post-race safety and technical inspection.

Bullring bullet points: Fans had a shot at another healthy 50/50 payday, as Angela Pickford of Baldwin, Ontario enjoyed a great night of racing a little more with her $610.00 win…It was a rough night for a trio of well-known local weekly racers. Kevin Strutt and Dan Demers both had their efforts in the Mini Stock division sidelined mechanical woes. Strutt said his No. 34 car ran great until its powerplant expired…Former Ontario Modifieds Racing Series Tour champion John Baker Jr. made hard contact with the turn 3 wall and needed help from friends and members of other crews to load his damaged machine into the hauler.

Saturday, July 2nd Peterborough Speedway celebrates the Canada Day Weekend with the year's 2nd Double Toonie Fan Appreciation Night, presented by Pepsi. Rob Warnes Takes the Peterborough Speedway OMRS Checkered Flag

Rob Warnes Takes the Peterborough Speedway OMRS Checkered Flag

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

A familiar face was celebrating in victory lane – Saturday, June 25th – as the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series, presented by GEN-3 Electrical returned to Canada's Toughest 3rd Mile Oval. Former series champion Rob Warnes – who won the title in 2014 – started on the inside of the front row and led every lap of the caution-free main event for his first win of the season.

The driver of the No. 95 machine faced an early challenge from tour newcomer Shane Pollock but he never looked back on the way to his first Peterborough Speedway victory since 2016. Ben Gruntz and Tyler Bouillon got around Pollock for 2nd and 3rd respectively. Chad Strawn, Alex Cuzzilla, Bob Franks and Randy Hollingsworth completed the running order. Rob Richards, Rick Warnes and John Baker Jr. did not start the main event.

The 4 OMRS qualifying events were split between Chad Strawn and Alex Cuzzilla. Teams return to action Saturday, July 2nd at Flamboro Speedway.

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series notebook: Peterborough Speedway's evening of racing was billed as Autism Awareness Night and second place finisher Ben Gruntz carried a special number design on his No. 4 car, as well as a decal to honour the memory of Draven Graham, an 11-year-old non-verbal youngster with Autism from Lindsay, Ontario who passed away earlier this year. OMRS officials also collected donations for the family's 'Go Fund Me' page at the tour's sign-in table at the track…A trio of series regulars were able to take the green flag for the 20 lap feature tilt. John Baker Jr. was sidelined after making hard contact with the turn 4 retaining wall in the night's 1st qualifier. Rob Richards suffered mechanical issues in the 3rd heat race, while Rick Warnes couldn't return after his No. 90 ride developed problems in the 2nd preliminary round.

Trailers Plus Canadian Legend Car Series Set to Hit Sunset Speedway

Trailers Plus Canadian Legend Car Series Set to Hit Sunset Speedway

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

After starting the season with a pair of rainouts in 3 attempts, teams with the Trailers Plus Canadian Legend Car Series are excited about heading to Sunset Speedway Saturday, June 25th for their first visit of the year. The event is sponsored by AC Plus Automotive, 1638 Penley Road in Orillia.

Heading into this weekend's show finds former Series champion Matt Haufe at the top of the point standings on the strength of a pair of qualifying heat wins and his runner-up effort in the Saturday, June 4th main event. Dawson Drimmie is 2nd, with opening round winner Parker Traves 3rd, just 7 points behind the leader. Rookie of the Year candidate Jordan Latimer sits 4th, Mark Griffin is 5th. Series owner and spokesperson Kevin Foisy says he expects many of the teams will use the event at Sunset to build some set-up notes for this year's running of the Canadian Legend Car Asphalt Nationals.

"Some of the drivers in our starting field may have been at Sunset before in a different type of car, but this will be their first exposure to the track in one of our machines," explained Kevin Foisy. "Its never too early to start getting ready for a first start at a new track so having the opportunity to do some homework with an event like the Asphalt Nationals on the horizon just makes good sense."

OMRS Mods Presented by GEN-3 Electrical Return to Peterborough Speedway

OMRS Mods Presented by GEN-3 Electrical Return to Peterborough Speedway

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

Don't miss the next round of open wheeled motorsports excitement as the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series, presented by GEN-3 Electrical returns to Peterborough Speedway Saturday, June 25th.

Since its inception on 2010, OMRS teams have offered fans thrilling and entertaining motorsports action. Close to a dozen runners took the green flag in the 2022 season opener – Saturday, May 28th – at the venue known as Canada's Toughest 3rd Mile. On the strength of his daring, 3-wide opening lap pass for the lead, Chad Strawn grabbed the top spot and hung on for his first trip to victory lane for the year. Series official and spokesperson Rick Warnes says it was a great start to the schedule.

"We'll have 8 dates on the calendar and will be looking to build on the momentum of our opening night's success," explained Warnes. "Some fresh faces are expected to be in the starting line-up for the next kick at the can and our drivers can't wait to get back on the track."

Warnes says that while every event on the timetable offers the same number of points toward the overall title, nothing will come close to being crowned the first winner of the Bill Pickford Memorial. The Saturday, August 20th shootout at Peterborough Speedway – in honour of the former OMRS racer and series founder – will be the highlight of the 2022 season. Full details are still in the planning stages and will be announced shortly.

Autism Awareness Night Returns June 25th at Peterborough Speedway

Autism Awareness Night Returns June 25th at Peterborough Speedway

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

By its nature, the sport of short track stock car racing can be described as a rough and tumble – and sometimes, even aggressive – spectator attraction. Saturday, June 25th fans at Peterborough Speedway will get to see the softer side of Canada's Toughest 3rd Mile Oval as the track plays host to an Autism Awareness Night. President of CNAF – the Canadian National Autism Foundation – Tina Fougere says its all about having family fun for a great cause.

"Kid's Race is about accepting our loved ones with Autism," Fougere said. "We couldn't ask for a better place in Central Ontario to host our special event. The wonderful people at Peterborough Speedway have opened their doors and more importantly, their hearts to our cause."

Kid's Race was started in 2010 as an idea to create a new platform for Autism research and awareness. It wasn't too long after speaking with – and working alongside track owners, officials, drivers, crews and fans – that a common bond was formed. Everyone associated with the event quickly realized that passion, dedication, family and a love for what they do is something that everyone shared. Peterborough Speedway owner/promoter J.P. Josiasse says that Autism Awareness Night – Saturday, June 25th – is an informative and educational event for everyone who comes through the gates.

"Our drivers, teams, crew members, sponsors and fans are quick to throw their support behind a worthwhile cause," Josiasse said. "Even if a member of your family hasn't been affected by autism, you probably know someone who has. Whatever you can do to help the Canadian National Autism Foundation is a win-win for everyone involved,"

To learn more about Kid's Race, visit www.kidsrace.ca or call 888.977.RACE (7223). The Canadian National Autism Foundation website is www.cnaf.net

On track action for Saturday, June 25th at Peterborough Speedway will feature the home track Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, KOD Disposal Super Stock and Late Model divisions, plus the GEN-3 Electrical Ontario Modifieds Racing Series and the Qwick Wick Fire Starter Can Am TQ Midgets. Pit gates will open at 2:30, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and racing at 6:00.

APC Pro Late Model Return Thrills the Peterborough Speedway Crowd

APC Pro Late Model Return Thrills the Peterborough Speedway Crowd

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

For the first time since their appearance during the 2018 season, the APC Pro Late Model Series was back to deliver a headline-worthy performance – Saturday, June 18th – at Canada's Toughest 3rd Mile Oval.

Ryan Kimball and Jake Sheridan brought the star-studded field of 23 starters to the Great Canadian RV green flag to kick-off the 100 lap main event. Early in the running, Sheridan threw everything he could think of at Kimball in an attempt to steal the lead, but the former Peterborough Speedway track champion and multi-time Autumn Colours winner held onto the top spot.

Just as their Qwick Wick Fire Starter Super Stock cousins had done earlier in the night, the race had a long string of green flag laps before the yellow waved with 28 circuits complete. From the restart, all eyes were on JR Fitzpatrick, who was a man on a mission. Coming from the 8th starting spot, Fitzpatrick took the lead as the pack showed 59 laps on the board. Other than briefly surrendering the position to Sheridan, the No. 84 machine was in total control and grabbed his second straight win on the tour. Andrew Gresel, Sheridan, Rick Spencer-Walt, Josh Stade and Kyle Steckly completed the top 5.

Also on the night's agenda was a 50 lap 'A' main for the Qwick Wick Fire Starter Super Stock Tour. After running the majority of the race distance caution-free, a pair of late race yellow flags led to a dramatic change in the outcome, as Jason Parker took the win over polesitter Shawn Chenoweth on a green, white checkered finish. Lane Zardo, defending race winner Carson Nagy and Pete Vanderwyst completed the top 5. The full race story can be found at www.apcracingseries.com

Steve Finnegan took the win over Sean Kennedy, Jake Kelly, Mark Griffin and Kris Khan in the caution-free Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock 20 lap feature. Finnegan also had a pair of qualifying event wins, with the others going to Brad Lavalle and Angelo Novis.

The Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck field also ran its feature tilt without a yellow flag, as Paul Boundy took the win over Kyle Gordon, Shawn Murray, Stacey Switzer and Jordan Desroches. Switzer took a pair of Renegade Truck qualifying checkered flags, with Boundy and Gordon sharing the others.

All event finishes are unofficial and subject to scoring review, as well as post-race technical and safety inspection.

Bullring bullet points: Randall Patterson of Oshawa claimed the 50/50 winner's share of just less than $925.00…In a moving trackside moment with a final lap around the track, Rick Spencer-Walt paid tribute to the memory of provincial motorsports photographer Dan Little Jr. who had passed away earlier in the week…Other than contact with the 4th turn wall that sidelined the No. 38 Renegade Truck of Michael Feeney, the night's program – which is currently available on the G-Force-TV You Tube channel – was largely incident free and completed in under 4 hours.

Peterborough Speedway staff would like to thank the team at KOD Disposal for their help to get the facility prepped and painted for the live broadcast on G-Force-TV. A long-time track sponsor, KOD Disposal also tripled the regular purse payout for the hometown Bone Stock field. The 2022 schedule continues Saturday, June 25th with the annual Autism Awareness Night, in support of the Canadian National Autism Foundation. On track action includes the home track Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, KOD Disposal Super Stock and Late Model divisions, along with the GEN-3 Electrical Ontario Modifieds Racing Series and Qwick Wick Fire Starter Can Am TQ Midgets. Pit gates open at 2:30, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and racing at 6:00.

Eric Girard, ministre des Finances

Hurry to www.eventsprout.com/event/peterborough-speedway-june-18th-2022 to order your advance tickets for this outstanding racing experience. In addition to 100 laps for the APC Pro Late Model teams and a 50 lap feature tilt for the Qwick Wick Super Stock runners, the KOD Disposal presented show will also include support from the home track Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock and Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck divisions.

"We're expecting one of the bigger; if not the biggest Saturday night crowd of this year's regular season," offered Peterborough Speedway track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse. "Fans are advised to act fast to avoid the disappointment of missing this event."

Even though the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road has hosted the APC Pro Late Model Series on 4 different occasions in the past, there have only been a couple of main event winners. Shawn Chenoweth took the checkered flags in 2015 and 2016, with Brandon Watson – who is a now a regular with the NASCAR Pinty's Series – claiming victories in 2017 and 2018. Teams with the Qwick Wick Firestarter Super Stock tour have logged just a single start, with Carson Nagy taking the 2021 win.

Peterborough Speedway alumni will play a prominent role in the starting line-up for each division. On the Pro Late Model side of the coin, former Autumn Colours Classic champion Ryan Kimball, Mini Stock graduate Danny Benedict and Connor James – who ran with the Canadian Legend Cars and OMRS Mods – are expected to be in the field. Reigning track title holder Anthony Dibello and another former home track runner Miles Tyson could join the Super Stock roster.
