Life-long NASCAR Fan Wins 11th Annual Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award

Down Syndrome of Louisville to receive $100,000 Donation

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (November 16, 2021) – The NASCAR Foundation announced Louisville, KY native Jeff Harmon as the winner of the 11th annual presentation of the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award during a live-streamed announcement on NASCAR's YouTube channel today. As the award winner, Harmon secured $100,000 from The NASCAR Foundation to Down Syndrome of Louisville.

"I'm so excited and humbled to win this award", said Jeff Harmon when he first received the news. "The other three finalists were all deserving as well, I'm blessed, what an honor. The $100,000 will go a long way in helping Down Syndrome of Louisville grow and expand to help even more kids. Thank you to The NASCAR Foundation and all who voted!"

Harmon, who has served, supported, and uplifted Down Syndrome of Louisville and the surrounding communities for 18 years, earned the most online votes from a pool of volunteers, including: Erin Collins of the Dallas Hearing Foundation, Jaeleen Davis of Maggie's Wigs 4 Kids of Michigan, and Beverly Hodson of Richie McFarland Children's Center, all of whom have impacted a combined number of 6,330 kids through their continual service. Each of these organizations has each earned a $25,000 donation from The NASCAR Foundation in recognition of their nominated volunteers' achievements.

"We're very proud to present this award to Jeff Harmon, he has been doing extraordinary work for Down Syndrome of Louisville and exemplifies the values of Betty Jane France," said Mike Helton, The NASCAR Foundation Chairman. "Our fans had a tough decision because all four are passionate people who devote hours of their time to help their respective organizations. We're delighted to present this recognition to Jeff to honor the work he's doing in the Louisville community."

Throughout the 11 years of its existence, the Betty Jane France Award has highlighted 44 different individuals who have served and uplifted children in their local communities.  The NASCAR Foundation, through this program, has acknowledged 622 years of combined service from these community heroes who have touched at least 374,763 children's lives overall.

Harmon began his tenure volunteering for the Down Syndrome of Louisville (DSL) 18 years ago, when his son, Justin, was born with Down Syndrome. Serving in the capacity of coach and fundraiser, he logs around 20 hours per month with the organization. The organization serves as a support system for local families and individuals that have dealt with Down Syndrome.

Harmon and the DSL plan to use the $100,000 cash prize to help implement modern playground equipment and sensory room renovations, as well as launching satellite campuses to further support the Down Syndrome community.

Aside from his service, Harmon has been a committed life-long fan of NASCAR, with his all-time favorite driver being Darrell Waltrip. The racing fan grew up racing modified stock cars with his family and friends, and now gets to share his love of the sport with his own family and children.

Canadian Legend Cars Increases its Dealer Support Network for 2022

Canadian Legend Cars Increases its Dealer Support Network for 2022

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

One of the country's top touring racing series – Canadian Legend Cars – has strengthened the level of support offered to its teams as tracks add the finishing touches to their 2022 schedules. National distributor Kevin Foisy is proud to welcome fellow racer and 2021 Canadian Asphalt Nationals champion Parker Traves to the team, as a representative for the area in and around his home base of Gravenhurst, Ontario. Also joining the team will be Robbie Thompson, who will serve the drivers from his location in Aylesford, Nova Scotia.

"Having Parker and Robbie come on board will give drivers in their respective areas solid contacts for chassis, parts and set-up information," explained Foisy. "We'll still take care of business from our home base here in Clayton but as more and more tracks add events to their line-ups, it makes sense for racers to have an additional connection when it comes to keeping their equipment in the starting field."

Kevin Foisy is quick to point out that the Canadian Legend Cars program is about more than selling quality racecars. Their team is committed to a driver's growth and development in the series, offering race winning tutelage from Parker Traves, Matt Haufe and Foisy who have earned checkered flags in some of the biggest Legends Series' events in the country, including multiple victories in Peterborough Speedway's Autumn Colours Classic and during the spring and fall Velocity Weekend events at Sunset Speedway.

"With the opportunity to earn points in several different classifications during the confines of the tour, Legends racers have a reputation of playing well with others when sharing information is concerned," said Kevin Foisy, who's Legends racing career began in 2007 and includes more than 100 main event wins. "These cars can be a step up the ladder for developing racers and they have also become a regular attraction at several different tracks across the province and around the country."

Practice & Qualifying Return With Knockout-Style Format in 2022

Practice & Qualifying Return With Knockout-Style Format in 2022

NASCAR to Implement Group-Based Qualifying for Three National Series

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (November 19, 2021) – NASCAR today announced the return of practice and qualifying to its race weekends in 2022, with a dramatic knockout-style qualifying format setting the starting lineup for each NASCAR Cup Series race.

The announcement comes after nearly two seasons with race weekends largely held without practice or qualifying – a procedure born out of necessity to reduce travel days and on-site personnel while navigating the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2022, all events across all three NASCAR national series are scheduled to include qualifying.

"NASCAR is excited to return practice and qualifying to its race weekends," said Scott Miller, NASCAR senior vice president of competition. "We missed seeing cars and trucks on track all weekend long, and so did our fans. We worked closely with our broadcast partners, teams and racetracks to create an exciting, unique qualifying format, while keeping several of the efficiencies that helped our entire industry successfully navigate the pandemic."

For a majority of the NASCAR Cup Series schedule, the field will be split into two groups and participate in a practice and qualifying event that will last approximately two hours. The two-hour window will allow broadcast partners ample time and ability to cover the entire field, bringing wide-ranging, in-depth stories and insight to millions of fans each and every weekend.

During six NASCAR Cup Series weekends, five NASCAR Xfinity Series weekends and eight NASCAR Camping World Truck Series weekends, NASCAR will implement an extended practice weekend schedule, which will feature one standalone 50-minute practice as well as a qualifying event.

Daytona International Speedway's Speedweeks and the lead-up to the DAYTONA 500 will employ the extended practice format for all three series. Busch Pole Award Qualifying for the DAYTONA 500 is scheduled for Wednesday evening, Feb. 16, 2022.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 9, 2021) – NASCAR today announced the qualifying elements and race format for the first-ever Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum, the unprecedented 150-lap main event highlighting two days of racing action at the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 5 and Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022.

On Saturday, NASCAR Cup Series competitors will take to the track for practice sessions prior to single car qualifying runs to determine the starting order for the four scheduled heat races. The field will be open to 40 entrants.

On Sunday, on-track action will begin at 5 p.m. ET on FOX, with four 25-lap heat races consisting of 10 cars each. Below is a breakdown on how the heat races will be filled out:

  • The top four fastest qualifiers from Saturday's single vehicle qualifying session will be on the pole for each heat race, while cars that qualified fifth through eight will make up the other half of the front row in each heat.
  • The remainder of each field will be filled out using this methodology (Ex. – heat one will be made up cars with qualifying positions of one, five, nine, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, 33, 37).
  • The top four finishers (16 total cars) from each heat race automatically advance through to the Busch Light Clash (8 p.m. ET, FS1), with the winner of heat one winning the pole and the heat two winner earning the outside pole.
  • The winners of heats three and four will fill out the second row, with the remaining order of these 16 cars being determined in the same manner.

The remaining six finishing positions from each heat (24 total cars) that did not advance will continue through to one of two 50-lap Last Chance Qualifying races. Below is a breakdown on how the Last Chance Qualifiers will be filled out:

  • The starting order for these two events will be determined based on finishing positions in the heat races.
  • Those that did not advance from heats one and three will make up the first Last Chance Qualifying race while the second race will be made of up those from heats two and four.
  • The fifth-place finishers from heats one and two will be on the pole in their respective Last Chance Qualifying races. The fifth-place finishers from heats three and four will be on the outside pole.
  • This pattern will continue to fill out 12 cars in each event.
  • The top three finishers (six total cars) from both Last Chance Qualifying races will advance to the Busch Light Clash, filling out positions 17 - 22 of the 23 available positions.

The final spot in the Busch Light Clash is reserved for the driver who finished the highest in the 2021 points standings who does not transfer on finishing position in the heat races or Last Chance Qualifying races.

All other drivers will be eliminated from competition for the remainder of the event weekend.

"The unprecedented nature of this event, coupled with the fact that our sport will be in the spotlight in the middle of downtown Los Angeles, makes this a can't miss event when we get our 2022 season underway next February."

"I've had the chance to drive on the track through iRacing and make some laps in the NextGen car at Bowman-Gray on a similar layout, and there's no doubt that this race is going to be awesome," said Clint Bowyer, longtime former NASCAR Cup Series driver and current FOX Sports analyst. "The different qualifying events and format for the Clash are only going to add to what will be an unforgettable weekend. This is definitely a race you're not going to want to miss!"
