Differing Agendas For PASS Drivers At North-South Shootout

CHARLOTTE, NC (November 3) – With the 13th Annual North-South Shootout just days away, Pro All Stars Series (PASS) South Super Late Model drivers from across the country are beginning to make their way to Concord Speedway.  While drivers like Winston-Salem, NC's Brandon Ward are preparing for the tall task of competing in both the PASS South Super Late Model and Tour-type Modified features, others have a different focus as race weekend approaches.

Jody Measamer from Sanford, NC has a lot riding on this year's North-South Shootout.  Following a points shakeup at the most recent PASS South Super Late Model race at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, Measamer finds himself tied for third in points with Matt Craig, just 16 markers behind new championship leader Tate Fogleman. 

"Entering the 2015 season my team and I believed we were one of the contenders, but circumstances knocked us out of the hunt," says Measamer.  "Now we must put two good races together at Concord and Hickory and capitalize on this opportunity because we have a real shot to win this championship."

The season started strong for Measamer with two top five finishes in the first four PASS South events of 2015, including his first career quick qualifying time, which came at Concord in May.  But along the way, misfortune caused Measamer to fall far behind the championship leaders.  Ironically, one of Measamer's strongest runs of the year came in one his worst races.  After being involved in an early accident with Joey Doiron at Caraway Speedway in May, Measamer and the Aquavapor team persevered to come home with a strong third place finish.  Now, Measamer heads back to Concord this weekend with a real shot at what once seemed like a championship that was too far out of reach.

"Although I spent a lot of time there in my childhood, Concord is a tough place and I haven't had many races there," says Measamer, who has picked up additional sponsorship from Solid Rock Carriers for the final two PASS events.  "Concord is a fast facility and we worked diligently there in May and had a great car, but a flat tire put us in the wall and ended our night.  I have aligned myself with an experienced crew chief for this event in hopes of improving our outcome for the North-South Shootout."

East Parsonsfield, ME's Trevor Sanborn returns to Concord Speedway this weekend with a different agenda from Ward and Measamer.  Sanborn will pilot Dicky Woodman's potent #8 entry in hopes of not only scoring a win in the North-South Shootout, but in grabbing an automatic starting spot for the 2016 Oxford 250.  This year's North-South Shootout is the first race of the recently announced "Road To The Oxford 250" program.  Sanborn is no stranger to success in the South having swept both PASS South events at Orange County Speedway back in 2008.

"I'm really excited to race at Concord this weekend, I've raced there one time and it's been my favorite track ever since," says Sanborn.  "It would be awesome to get a guaranteed starting spot in the prestigious Oxford 250 next year.  The main thing is, it gives you security because the 250 is the toughest race in the country to qualify for." 

Entries continue to come in for Saturday afternoon's North-South Shootout at Concord highlighted by the four PASS South championship contenders, Tate Fogleman, Zane Smith, Measamer, and Matt Craig.  Sanborn will be joined by 2006 Oxford 250 winner, Jeramie Whorff in a second Woodman Racing entry.  PASS Pro Late Model champion Kodie Conner will make the move to Super Late Model this weekend.  Veterans Jeff Batten, Jimmy Doyle, Joey Padgett, and Brandon Ward have filed entries, along with Anderson winner, Jared Irvan, making his first start in the Coulter Motorsports #2.  Defending North-South Shootout winner Ryan Moore returns, along with Northwest racing legend Garrett Evans and former Concord standout Clay Rogers.  K&N Pro Series champion William Byron will be making his first career PASS South Super Late Model start this weekend at Concord as well.

Action begins on Thursday, November 5 at Concord Speedway with open practice from 12-6 PM.  On Friday, November 6, practice will begin at 10 AM with qualifying starting at 5 PM for the PASS South Super Late Models, Tour-type Modifieds, SK Modifieds, North East Mini Stock Tour, and Street Stock.  On Saturday, November 7, practice begins at 9 AM for the 13th Annual North-South Shootout, with grandstand gates opening at 11 AM, followed by the pit party at 12:30 PM, and main events are set to start at 2 PM.

Antoine L’Estage et Alan Ockwell de l’équipe Subaru Canada décrochent le titre de Champions canadiens au Rocky Mountain Rally

Antoine L'Estage et Alan Ockwell de l'équipe Subaru Canada décrochent le titre de Champions canadiens au Rocky Mountain Rally

 

Invermere, C.-B., 2 novembre 2015 – Antoine L'Estage (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC) et Alan Ockwell (Toronto, ON) ont persévéré dans des conditions difficiles pour remporter le Rocky Mountain Rally 2015 et ravir le titre de Champion des manufacturiers pour Subaru Canada, L'Estage en étant à sa première année avec l'équipe. L'Estage a également remporté son huitième titre de Champion canadien. Ockwell a quant à lui remporté pour la quatrième fois le Championnat canadien des copilotes, son troisième avec l'équipe Subaru Canada.

Les coéquipiers ont été déclarés vainqueurs après que des conditions orageuses soient installées dans la région, forçant les organisateurs à annuler les trois dernières spéciales de la course.

" Nous avons eu un problème dans la première spéciale du rallye, mais l'équipe de service a pu réparer la voiture à la perfection", a dit L'Estage. "À partir de là, nous avons remporté toutes les autres spéciales de la course, et avons pris une grande avance. 

" C'est un bel évènement pour nous tous en tant qu'équipe. Nous sommes tous si passionnés par ce sport et entièrement dévoués à performer. De remporter le titre de pilote, de copilote et de manufacturier en fait un évènement parfait à nos yeux ".

Hardy Shmidtke (Red Deer, Alb.) et John Hall (Sherwood, Alb.) ont maintenu un rythme constant du début à la fin, terminant en deuxième place. L'expérience du duo favorise leur approche basée sur la constance, même si les conditions se sont détériorées durant le rallye.

" Notre focus était de maintenir un rythme constant durant la course ", a dit Schmidtke. " Les conditions sont devenues très difficiles plus tard dans la journée jusqu'au point où nous nous sommes seulement concentrés sur le fait de terminer le rallye ".

Boris Djordjevic (Edmonton) et Chris Kremer (Calgary) ont remporté leur premier podium en Championnat canadien ensemble. L'équipe a augmenté sa vitesse et développé sa voiture.

" Les efforts de l'équipe ont porté fruits", a dit Djordjevic. " Tout s'est amélioré et ça continue. Chaque fois que la voiture performait bien nous étions dans le top 3, donc nous serons dans une bonne position au prochain rallye ".

Eric Growchowski (Calgary) et Bill Dubreuil (Nanton, Alb.), ont dominé la catégorie deux roues motrices avec leur Corolla propulsion. Grochowski a emprunté la voiture d'un bon ami pour pouvoir compétitionner cette saison, et a prouvé qu'il était digne de confiance en terminant sur la plus haute marche du podium.

" Le résultat est encore mieux que ce nous espérions ", a dit Grochowski. " Je suis fier d'avoir gagné ici par le passé dans une voiture à traction avant, et aujourd'hui dans une voiture propulsion. Je dois féliciter mon copilote Bill. C'est seulement son deuxième rallye, je lui met beaucoup de pression et il a livré la marchandise ".

Le Rocky Mountain Rally est l'avant-dernière manche du calendrier du Championnat des Rallyes Canadiens 2015. Tenu sur les routes montagneuses à l'extérieur d'Invermere et de Radium Hot Springs, C.-B., l'édition 2015 a été écourtée alors qu'une tempête s'est installée sur la région lors du jour 2 du rallye. Avec des conditions de blizzard sur la majorité du parcours, les organisateurs ont annulé les trois dernières spéciales de la course. Les résultats obtenus jusqu'à cette étape ont été déclarés finaux et les équipes sont rentrées au quartier général pour les cérémonies de remises de prix.

Le Championnat des Rallyes canadiens comprend six évènements, tenus à la grandeur du Canada, et qui se déroulent de février à novembre. La série est présentée par Subaru Canada. La Canadian Association of Rallysport (CARS) est l'organisme qui sanctionne le rallye au Canada.

Le rallye est souvent décrit simplement comme "de vraies voitures, sur de vraies route, vraiment rapides." Ce sport motorisé toute saison voit des pilotes et leur copilote conduire des voitures de rue modifiées jusqu'à la limite. Ils conduisent à de très grandes vitesses sur des routes fermées qui sont en général constituées de 150 kilomètres de gravier, de terre battue, ou de neige. Les spectateurs peuvent s'approcher des voitures dans les aires de service et aussi suivre l'action dans des aires spécialement désignées pour les spectateurs qui offrent les meilleurs points de vue des routes.

Subaru Rally Team Canada's Antoine L'Estage and Alan Ockwell clinch Canadian Rally Championship titles at the Rocky Mountain Rally

 

Invermere, B.C., November 2, 2015 – Antoine L'Estage (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu,QC) and Alan Ockwell (Toronto, ON) persevered in difficult conditions to win the 2015 Rocky Mountain Rally and clinch the manufacturer's Canadian Rally Championship title for Subaru Canada in L'Estage's first year with the team. L'Estage also claimed his eighth Canadian driver's title. Ockwell earned his fourth co-driver's title, his third with Subaru Rally Team Canada.  

The pair were declared winners after storm conditions engulfed the course, forcing organizers to cancel the final three competitive stages. 

"We had a problem on the first stage of the event, but the guys in service were able to make the car perfect again," said L'Estage. "From there, we went on to win all of the rest of the stages at the rally, and take a big lead. 

"This is a great event for all of us on the team. Everyone is so passionate about the sport and dedicated to having a winning performance. To earn the driver, co-driver and manufacturer championship titles really makes this a perfect event for us."

Hardy Schmidtke (Red Deer, AB) and John Hall (Sherwood Park, AB) maintained a constant pace from start to finish, earning a second place result. The team's experience helps the pair maintain a consistent approach to the rally, even as conditions deteriorated through the event.  

"Our focus was on maintaining a consistent pace through the rally," said Schmidtke. "Conditions later in the event became really challenging to the point where we simply focussed on getting to the end safely."     

Boris Djordjevic (Edmonton) and Chris Kremer (Calgary) earned their first Canadian Rally Championship podium together. The team has been increasing their pace as they've developed their car. 

"All of the team's hard work paid off," said Djordjevic. "Everything has been improving and I think it's all looking up from here. Every time we had the car running well we were able to put in top three times, so we'll be in a good position for the next event."

Eric Growchowski (Calgary) and Bill Dubreuil (Nanton, AB), dominated the two-wheel-drive competition in a rear wheel drive Corolla. Grochowski had borrowed the car from a good friend to be able to compete this season, and proved the trust well founded by finishing atop the podium. 

"The result was far better than we expected this weekend," said Grochowski. "I'm personally proud to have won here in a front wheel drive car in the past, and now a rear wheel drive car. I have to congratulate my co-driver Bill. This is only his second event ever and I put him under a lot of pressure and he delivered."  

The Rocky Mountain Rally is the penultimate round of the 2015 Canadian Rally Championship calendar. Run on the mountain roads outside of Invermere and Radium Hot Springs, B.C., the 2015 edition was cut short when a storm moved into the area on the second day of racing. With blizzard conditions on much of the course, organizers opted to cancel the last three stages of the rally. The results to that point were declared final and teams returned to rally headquarters for the awards ceremony.  

The Canadian Rally Championship is comprised of six events held nationwide in a season that extends from February to November. The series is presented by Subaru Canada, supported by Yokohama Tire Canada and features a contingency program from Subaru Canada. The Canadian Association of Rallysport (CARS) is the official sanctioning body for rallying in Canada.

Rally car racing is often described simply as "real cars, real roads, real fast." The all-season
motorsport sees drivers and their co-drivers take modified road cars to the limit as they achieve blistering speeds over closed-road courses that typically cover more than 150 kilometers of gravel, dirt or snow-covered roads. Fans can get up close to the cars in the service areas and catch all the action from  designated spectator points located at the best spots on the route.

CHARLOTTE, NC (October 30) – Pro All Stars Series (PASS) officials announced today the release of the 2016 schedule for the PASS South Super Late Models.  The South's longest running and most competitive Super Late Model series will be highlighted in 2016 by three events each at two of the most storied speedway's in the region, Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina and Concord Speedway in North Carolina.  With 10 dates confirmed and an additional four dates to be added, the PASS South Super Late Models will compete on at least six different venues over the course of the 2016 season.

            "As we always try to do for our fans and competitors, we are very glad to have the 2016 PASS South schedule completed at such an early date," said PASS President Tom Mayberry.  "We're excited to get the season started off early in February at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.  We believe this is one of the best schedules we have put forth for our racers.  We're also very appreciative for all of our enthusiastic track owners and operators for their cooperation to help make this happen.  All in all, we've got a great group of tracks returning to the schedule next year and are excited for the possibilities."

As announced last weekend, the season will start on Super Bowl weekend, February 5-6, at Greenville-Pickens Speedway with the return of the Winter Meltdown, which was previously held at tracks in Florida.  The PASS South Super Late Models will be joined by a "non-winners" Limited Late Model race and the Truck division.  The Winter Meltdown will also be the first event of the 2016 PASS National Championship Series.  PASS will return for two more events at Greenville-Pickens Speedway on Saturday, May 14 and on Saturday, July 16.

The PASS South Super Late Models will stay in the Palmetto State for race number two of the 2016 season when they travel towards the coast to Dillon Motor Speedway.  The 11th Annual South Carolina Clash will take place onSaturday, March 5.  The tricky, egg-shaped oval has been on the PASS South schedule since 2009 and has seen drivers such as Ryan Blaney, Daniel Hemric, and Austin Theriault take the checkered flag in years past.

Just two weeks later, PASS will return to the Tarheel State for the first time in 2016 when it hits Concord Speedway on Saturday, March 19th.  PASS will also be back at Caraway Speedway on Saturday, April 16.  Additional details will be released on both of these major events in the coming weeks. 

Following a successful revival of the triangular speedway this year, PASS will expand its relationship with Concord Speedway by again hosting the Old Glory 125 on Friday, May 27th as part of the big Memorial Day festivities in the Charlotte area.  The famed half-mile, known for its legendary Big 10 Series, will crown the 2016 PASS South Super Late Model champion with the running of the 14th Annual North-South Shootout at Concord, on November 4-5, along with the Tour-type Modifieds and several additional divisions in action.

Hickory Motor Speedway, the longest tenured facility on the PASS South circuit dating back to 2006, will once again hold the biggest Super Late Model race of the Spring.  The 11th Annual Easter Bunny 150 will bring some of the best racers in North America together again on Saturday, March 26.  The Easter Bunny 150 will also be the second race that will make up the 2016 PASS National Championship Series.  As an added bonus, the 2016 winner of the Easter Bunny 150 will get an automatic starting spot in the 2016 Oxford 250 as part of the newly announced "Road To The Oxford 250" program. The first race of the "Road To The Oxford 250" will be next weekend's North-South Shootout at Concord Speedway.

South Boston Speedway will again host two popular weekends of racing that will see the PASS South Late Models make their only trips of the season to the commonwealth of Virginia.  The PASS South Super Late Models will compete on a stout racing card of 150 lappers, coupled with Twin 75s for the NASCAR Late Model Stocks on Saturday, June 4 and onSaturday, August 13.

Final confirmation for the June 18 and September 24 dates is expected early next week.

Look for the release of the 2016 schedule for the PASS North Super Late Models and the remainder of the PASS National Championship Series to be released in the near future.

And, don't forget, the biggest short track race on asphalt, the 43rd Annual Oxford 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway in Maine will take place August 26-28, 2016, paying $25,000 to the winner plus additional lap leader bonus money.  Glen Luce, the 2015 Oxford 250 winner, took home over $30,000 for his triumph in this year's event.

Northwest Legend Evans Set To Tackle PASS Events At Concord And Hickory in November

CHARLOTTE, NC (October 28) – As the 2015 Pro All Stars Series (PASS) South Super Late Model season enters the homestretch, teams are preparing for two of the biggest races of the year.  PASS will help bring the North-South Shootout home to Concord Speedway on Saturday, November 7 and will follow that up by crowning the series champion three weeks later at Hickory Motor Speedway as part of the 10th Annual Mason Dixon Meltdown 200.

One of the most excited drivers for these two big PASS events in the Tarheel State is Ardenvoir, WA's, Garrett Evans.  Evans is one of the most legendary names when it comes to racing in the Pacific Northwest, having won four titles in the old NASCAR Northwest series between 1985 and 2000.  But even though he lives nearly 3000 miles away, it will not be his first trip to Concord Speedway.  Evans competed regularly in the Big 10 Series at Concord in the 1990's and has even raced with PASS there.  Evans led several laps in the late going of the 2012 Mason Dixon Meltdown at Concord, before eventually falling from the race and finishing 16th.

"Concord is my favorite track," says Evans, who is already making his trip east for the next two PASS races.  "I love the dogleg and have a lot of friends in that area.  I almost feel like it's my home track.  The key there will be to get the car handling good for 125 green flag laps and to be smart."

While the North-South Shootout will not be his first trip to Concord, the Mason Dixon Meltdown 200 in late November will be his first chance to compete at Hickory Motor Speedway.  While Concord is fast, treacherous, and completely unique, Hickory is smaller and has similar characteristics to many of the speedways Evans has competed on back on the West Coast.

"I have never raced at Hickory, but I've heard a lot about it and I'm looking forward to the race there," says Evans, driver of the familiar #64 sponsored by Leonard Evans Used Cars.  "I'm hoping to get some good pointers from my good friend Larry Pollard of LP Gear."

While Evans will be one of the many drivers fans will be watching at Concord, they will also have to keep their eyes on the PASS South points battle, which was turned on its head following the most recent race at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.  The top four in points are only separated by 16 markers, with Tate Fogleman now out front by just 14 points over former points leader Zane Smith. Veterans Jeff Batten and Brandon Ward have filed entries, along with Anderson winner, Jared Irvan, making his first start in the Coulter Motorsports #2.  PASS Pro Late Model champion Kodie Conner will make the move to Super Late Model and Dicky Woodman will field two entries for Trevor Sanborn and 2006 Oxford 250 winner, Jeramie Whorff.

Action begins on Thursday, November 5 at Concord Speedway with open practice from 12-6 PM.  On Friday, November 6, practice will begin at 10 AM with qualifying starting at 5 PM for the PASS South Super Late Models, Tour-type Modifieds, SK Modifieds, North East Mini Stock Tour, and Street Stock.  On Saturday, November 7, practice begins at 9 AM for the 13th Annual North-South Shootout, with grandstand gates opening at 11 AM, followed by the pit party at 12:30 PM, and main events are set to start at 2 PM

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (October 27, 2015) – "NASCAR has worked to review an extensive amount of material from Sunday's NASCAR race in Talladega including video, team radio transmissions and downloadable data. Based on that review, the race results are considered official as we prepare for the upcoming 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Eliminator Round starting Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.

 

"Post-race inspection is currently being conducted. The five cars at the NASCAR Research & Development Center for post-race inspection are the No. 22 (winner), No. 88 (runner-up), No. 18 (final car qualifying for the Eliminator Round), No. 31 (first car not qualifying for the Eliminator Round) and the No. 98 (random).

 

"Additionally, aside from today's post-race inspection, NASCAR has completed review of any other potential penalties from the track this past weekend, and there will be no further actions."

MILVERTON, ONTARIO, Monday October 26, 2015:  On Tuesday October 27th  four time NASCAR Champion Scott Steckly will kick off the Victory Tour at St. Michaels Catholic Elementary School in Cambridge at 2:30 p.m. with a "Show & Tell" for the kids with his 520 H.P. NASCAR race car.  He will also talk to them about having goals and dreams and how you can achieve them if you work hard. 

 

Volunteers from St. Michaels and the parents will all work together to host a giant BBQ and fundraiser in the Canadian Tire parking lot at 65 Pinebrush Road, Cambridge afterwards from4:00 – 6:30 p.m. with all monies raised going to the school.

 

His actual winning NASCAR race car, which competes at events throughout Canada will be on site for all the students to check out and get an autographed picture from driver and four time champion Scott Steckly.

 

Everyone is welcome to come out and support this fundraising effort.

Earns Second Straight Airborne NASCAR Track Title


DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 26, 2015) — Consistency was the key in 2015 for Nick Heywood as he repeated as NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track champion at Airborne Park Speedway.

 

Heywood secured another title behind two wins, 15 top fives and 18 top 10s across 19 feature races in the J&S Steel Modified division at Airborne. It was his fourth-consecutive crown at the .4-mile asphalt oval in the Adirondack Park region of Plattsburgh, New York, and second under the NASCAR banner.

 

"Competition wise, we had a lot stiffer competition this year," Heywood said. "I only had two wins, but had a consistent year and only one DNF."

 

Heywood took home five checkered flags in 2014 to garner the Jostens National Rookie of the Year as a first-year Whelen All-American Series Division I license holder when Airborne joined the NASCAR program. This season, the native of Plattsburgh relied on regular top finishes to retain the track championship.

 

His two triumphs bookended the campaign as he won the opener on May 2 and the back end of a season-finale doubleheader on Sept. 5.

 

"We started off really strong and just stayed consistent and held our ground," Heywood said. "I think we only dropped out of the points lead once or twice, but consistency propelled us back up."

 

An owner/driver, Heywood piloted his No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet to a 96-point advantage in the division's final standings over Jason Durgan, despite Durgan's two more victories. With his father, Randy, serving as the team's crew chief, Heywood finished fourth in the Whelen All-American Series New York state standings and 21st nationally.

 

The fourth-consecutive Airborne title overall for Heywood came with some history, as it marked the first time in the track's 62-year history that a driver accomplished the feat.

 

"They started talking in early August about how nobody had ever done it," Heywood said. "It added a little bit of pressure. There's been some pretty big names that have come through Airborne during the years so to be the first two win four in a row feels great."

 

It remains to be seen whether Heywood will have an opportunity to extend the record. Airborne is currently up for sale or lease, leaving the champion unsure of his 2016 plans.

 

"I don't know if we're going to do any championship hunting," Heywood said. "We're probably going to do a little traveling. We're going to try Autodrome St-Eustache in Canada, and maybe try dirt racing as well."

 

Like Airborne, St-Eustache (Quebec) also promotes dirt-style modifieds on asphalt, which provides Heywood with a natural alternative only 90 minutes from his hometown. St-Eustache is a NASCAR-sanctioned weekly track as well.

 

Established in 1982, the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series is NASCAR's national championship program for weekly short track auto racing. In all, 58 paved and dirt tracks throughout the United States and Canada participated in 2015.

 

Connecticut-based Whelen Engineering is the series' title sponsor. Whelen Engineering is a leading manufacturer of automotive, aviation, industrial and emergency vehicle lighting. NASCAR tracks and pace cars are among the many showcases for Whelen products.

 

Airborne Park will hold its 2015 Banquet of Champions and recognize Heywood's accomplishments on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Rainbow Wedding and Banquet Hall in Altona, New York.

 

Heywood will also be honored for his Airborne Park crown along with other track and state/province champions from across North America as part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards on Dec. 11 at the Charlotte Convention Center and NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina.

 

"We had a great time last year so we're going back down and have another good time I'm sure," Heywood said.
