Drellos Streaks to Four Straight Wins at Devil's Bowl Speedway

White, 11, sets new mark as youngest winner in history

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Demetrios Drellos is almost beginning to appear superhuman at Devil's Bowl Speedway. The Queensbury, N.Y., racer – known as "The Greek Streak" – extended his own streak to four consecutive victories on The Stove Depot Night, Saturday, September 19. Other big moments during the night included wins for Todd Stone, Anthony Warren, Cam Gadue, and Tim Simonds, and 11-year-old Kaidin White reset the record as the youngest feature winner in Devil's Bowl's 54-season history.

Drellos scored his win in the 30-lap feature for the Pepsi Sportsman Modified division, but it looked as though young Michael Wagner-Fitzgerald was headed for a career-first win. Wagner-Fitzgerald battled early with veteran Mike Palmer before getting away with the lead on the fifth lap. He built a sizeable advantage over rookie Justin Stone, and he was seven laps away when a caution flag flew.

The cream had begun to rise at that point as Drellos, Justin Comes, and Adam Pierson had each come from 14th starting position or worse to be inside the top five. Wagner-Fitzgerald chose the outside lane for the restart, putting second-place Drellos on the bottom – right where he had made most of his passes through traffic. Drellos easily scooted into the lead and pulled away over the final laps for the win.

Comes nipped Wagner-Fitzgerald at the finish line for the runner-up spot by just three feet, though the third-place finish was far and away a career-best result for Wagner-Fitzgerald in the top-level Sportsman Modified class at Devil's Bowl. Pierson finished fourth with Stone fifth, ahead of Frank Hoard III, Jack Speshock, Kenny Tremont Jr., John St. Germain Jr., and Alex Bell.

The finish is unofficial pending results of an engine inspection on the Drellos car. Qualifying heat wins went to Comes, Bell, and Pierson, and Bobby Hackel won the last-chance consolation qualifier.

The season's second Sportsman Modified "Draw Race" was also on the card, providing an alternative, non-points event for outside drivers to compete without the disadvantage of the weekly handicapping system placing them in the rear of the starting order.

Three-time Devil's Bowl champion Todd Stone pulled the Small Block "358" engine out of his car during the week and installed a Sportsman-legal GM "602" crate powerplant in order to enter the race, and the Middlebury, Vt., racer proved to be dominant. Stone won his qualifying heat and had a big lead in the 25-lap feature before the race's lone caution period with seven circuits remaining.

Brian Calabrese gave Stone all he could handle at the restart and took the lead on the backstretch, but Stone powered around Calabrese to reclaim the lead and sail to the win. Calabrese settled for second ahead of Jamy Begor, Dylan Rabtoy, and Derek Bornt. The win was the 42nd of Stone's career at Devil's Bowl and his first since 2015.

Anthony Warren got back on the winning track in the 20-lap feature for the O'Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman division. The Shoreham, Vt., racer made some three-wide moves in the early laps before taking the lead, and then held off a determined Larry Gallipo after the midway point for his third win of the season. Gallipo's runner-up finish was his best of the year and came in his final start of 2020 before he travels out of state on business.

Point leader Johnny Bruno finished third and Albany-Saratoga Speedway champion Bryce Breault came from 15th starting position to finish fourth in his first Devil's Bowl start. Lacey Hanson completed the top five, followed by Austin Comes, Matt Bilodeau, Joe Kemp, Josh Bussino, and Shawn McPhee. Bilodeau, Gallipo, and Warren won the qualifying heats.

Cam Gadue scored a popular first win in the Super Stock division, leading every step of the way in a 25-lap feature. The well-liked racer from the Canadian border town of Highgate, Vt., held off four-time champion Bill Duprey over a series of restarts and never wavered. Gadue was in the battle for Rookie of the Year honors in 2019 before losing his father, Kevin, in an ATV accident in August of that year. Many of the Super Stock competitors stopped in victory lane to congratulate Gadue as he collected the checkered flag.

Duprey finished as the runner-up, just in front of an entertaining, race-long battle for third place that ultimately went to Russ Farr. Farr swapped positions with Andrew FitzGerald, Matt Mosher, and Jim McKiernan for nearly the entire distance before claiming the spot. Mosher was fourth ahead of FitzGerald, McKiernan, Michael Wright, Ronnie Alger, Tyler Irwin, and Curtis Condon.

The Mini Stock division saw its 20-lap feature cut five laps short by the predetermined 20-minute time limit was enacted after many yellow flags and a red flag for a flip by Brenden Lauzon, who was uninjured. Tim Simonds of Clarendon, Vt., was much the best throughout the race, driving from sixth to take the lead in six laps, then holding off point leader Chris Conroy for his second win.

Conroy got his first podium finish since the end of July with the runner-up result. Jarrod Colburn finished a strong third, followed by Kyle Davis Jr. and rookie Griff Mahoney. The top 10 was completed in order by Craig Kirby, Chris Lussier (substituting for Katrina Bean), Brian Blake, Dick Stone, and Willie Rice.

Monkton, Vt.'s Kaidin White made history as the youngest feature winner in Devil's Bowl history at age 11 years, 2 months, 2 days, by copping the 20-lap race for the Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint division. White led every lap and outran Kamden Duffy for the win; Duffy had previously set the age record in July at 12 years old.

Samantha Mulready was third ahead of Austin Chaves and John Smith. Eric Wade, Lynn Sumner, Cody O'Brien, Arnie Kasuba, and John McPhee Jr. were next in line. The Mini Sprint division has a wide array of racers young, old, and in between; third-place Mulready is 31 and ninth-place Kasuba, a rookie, is 62.

Devil's Bowl Speedway returns to action on Saturday, September 26 at 6:00 p.m. with Championship Night. The 2020 title winners will be crowned in all five weekly divisions, and the final Sportsman Modified "Draw Race" will also be held. The Addison County Benefit Pull comes to Devil's Bowl on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3 with two full days of truck, tractor, and garden tractor pulls. The 2020 stock car racing season closes with the "Foliage Fun Run" event on Sunday, October 4, with "run what you brung" open competition races for all divisions, plus mechanic races and a 50-lap Enduro.

Peterborough Speedway Hosts its Inaugural Event of the 2020 Schedule

It was a long time coming, but the venue known as Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval finally hosted its opening event of the 2020 season. The sound of hometown racing returned to Peterborough Speedway – Saturday, September 19th – as Crowe's Gas Bar and Dart Heating & Air Conditioning, in partnership with Lakeport Power and Cornerstone Builders presented a 4-division show featuring the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, KOD Disposal Super Stock and Trailers Plus Ontario Legends. 

 

With 40 laps to settle the score, former track champion Ryan Oosterholt and invader Warren Paxton brought the Jiffy Lube Mini Stock field to the grid for the first main event of the abbreviated 2020 season. As he has done so many times before, Oosterholt took control at the drop of the green flag, while the rest of the pack battled for position in his mirror. Even though the pace was slowed for about a handful of yellow flags, the outcome was never in doubt. Oosterholt led Paxton, Craig Kamrath, Brad Lavalle and Chandler Bos across the line. 

 

Heat winners: Ryan Oosterholt (x2), Warren Paxton (x2), Craig Kamrath, Jeff Laflamme. 

 

Paul Boundy and Anthony Dibello showed the way as the KOD Disposal Super Stockers hit the track for their feature tilt. Dibello made an aggressive move from the outside of the front row at the drop of the green flag and wrestled the lead away from Boundy. The move on the opening lap was a sign of things to come as the driver of the No. 16 machine built-up about a 10- car length advantage on the runner-up spot. Tyler Bouillon closed on Boundy in the late going but couldn't take the spot. Coltin Everingham and Tim Burke chased the top 3 to the checkered flag in the 40-lap affair.

Ryan Oosterholt and Shawn Solomon paced the 19 car Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock starting line-up for the entry level division's first feature of the year. Following the script as the Mini Stock feature, Oosterholt took an early lead, but Solomon showed his strength with new colours for 2020 on his ride. The race's final yellow flag – for a back straight issue with 34 laps complete – created a late race shootout. Nic Ramsay threw everything but the kitchen sink at Chris Tubman but fell short of wrestling the 3rd position away from the No. 88 machine. Steve Finnegan completed the top 5 finishers. 

 

Heat winners: Shawn Solomon, Ryan Oosterholt, Steve Finnegan, Nic Ramsay. 

 

A 30-lap headliner for the Trailers Plus Ontario Legends closed-out the night's action. Hard charging Miles Tyson took the lead from his inside front row starting spot, with Parker Traves, Nick Ledson and Matt Haufe coming on strong. Ledson claimed the runner-up spot with about 10 laps complete and was closing on the leader in lapped traffic. Just past the hallway mark, the yellow flag waived for an incident in the 4th turn that collected Tyson and ended his night. Ledson was the new leader on the restart, but Haufe was closing fast and claimed the position as the lap counter showed 22 complete and held on for the win. Ledson, Traves, Kevin Foisy and Adam Cuthbertson chased the former series champion to the checkered flag. 

 

Heat winners: Matt Haufe (x2), Dawson Drimmie, Kevin Foisy, Nick Ledson, Parker Traves. 

 

All finishing positions are unofficial and subject to post-race technical inspection and scoring review. 

 

Bullring bullet points: Track staff and officials spent the week leading-up to the event reviewing the latest provincial directives and guidelines pertaining to social distancing and allowable crowd size. Signage was installed in the grandstands and pit area to make sure everyone was aware of the proper protocol…Car counts were strong in all divisions, but it was a tough night for reigning Bone Stock track champion Corey Strawn who suffered mechanical issues during practice and couldn't make his long anticipated Mini Stock debut. Rob Crick also missed the year's opening green flag. 

 

Action returns Saturday, September 26th with the Bone Stock, Mini Stock and Legend classes, along with the Peterborough Speedway debut of the Ontario Midgets. Drivers are reminded that they will need to register for action and complete the 'intent to compete' process according to provincial contact tracing.

Good things come to those who wait. For fans of Saturday night racing at Peterborough Speedway, the wait is almost over. The track's first events of the 2020 season have finally been announced. After spending time working through all 3 stages of the provincial government's COVID-19 recovery plan, the venue known as Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval will open the gates as long-time supporters Crowe's Gas and Dart Heating & Air Conditioning, in partnership with Lakeport Power and Cornerstone Builders present racing Saturday, September 19th and September 26th with a 5:00 green flag each night. 

 

"The pandemic has played havoc with our scheduling but like in the days leading-up to any season opener, our team will be working hard to get everything ready," said track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse. "Soon we'll get to race for real. Our fans and racers are excited to be returning to action. Its been a long time coming, but we're all sure that it'll be well worth the wait." 

 

The first of the 2 shows will include the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, KOD Disposal Super Stock and Trailers Plus Ontario Legend divisions. The second date will have the Bone Stock, Mini Stock and Legends, along with the Ontario Midgets; a collaborative effort between the OSCAAR Pro Sprint and Outlaw Midget classes. Each event will have a next day rain date if necessary. On-line registration is now open at www.peterboroughspeedway.comfor the Mini Stock, Super Stock and Ontario Midget divisions. 

 

Josiasse says that things will be a little different when the track opens-up for these 2 shows, with provincial government protocol designed to keep everyone safe being a high priority as they prepare for the green flag. Officials are working through a checklist that includes the most recent requirements for things like contact tracing and social distancing. 

 

"At this point, restrictions have limited Peterborough Speedway to 100 grandstand tickets," Josiasse explained. "Fans interested in tickets for either or both of the 2 planned race dates can enter a lottery for the available spots that will follow a procedure similar to the race team registration. Grandstand tickets – with a limit of 2 per person – are $40 each and will need to be pre-ordered. Please send your requests to jp@peterboroughspeeday.com. Any season ticket holders are asked to contact the track or me directly." 

 

Josiasse went on to say that officials are looking to make decision on Autumn Colours is expected in the near future. The goal is to have some sort of event Thanksgiving Weekend, subject to government restrictions.

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Demetrios Drellos won the biggest stock car race in the 54-season history of Devil's Bowl Speedway on Sunday, September 6, taking the third annual Interstate All Battery Center Vermont 200. The Queensbury, N.Y., driver stood head and shoulders above a record field of 89 Crate Sportsman Modified entries to win the $7,500 top prize, and he also collected $3,376 in lap leader bonus prizes to bring his total rake to $10,876.

Scott Holcomb and rookie Troy Audet also visited Victory Lane on Sunday, winning races for a pair of winged sprint car classes, taking the Sprint Cars of New England (SCoNE) and Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint races, respectively.

With 89 Sportsman cars on the grounds, qualifying was an intense – but clean and well-driven – affair. Three rounds of preliminary action set the stage through heat races, consolations, and a pair of B-Features for the 34-car starting field. Heat race wins went to Matt Janczuk, Payton Talbot, Mike Fisher, John St. Germain Jr., Robert Bublak Jr., and Zach Sobotka. Consi races were won by Mike Maresca, Michael Wagner-Fitzgerald, and Drellos, and the last-chance B-mains went to Jason Gray and Adam Pierson.

Bublak found himself on the pole position after the Interstate Batteries redraw among the top 12 qualifiers, and with $25 – or more – in bonus cash going to the leader of each lap, he set a strong, steady pace out front. Bublak led the first 84 laps to collect $2,211, and he held off all challengers through seven restarts, but Drellos came charging on the extreme outside lane to make what proved to be the winning pass at lap 85.

A 15-minute competition caution period just after the halfway mark allowed drivers and teams to make adjustments for the second half. Drellos got even stronger, but so, too, did the likes of Janczuk, Maresca, Kevin Root, Tim Hartman Jr., Adam Pierson, rookie Josh Masterson, and several others, which changed the complexion of the race. Bublak, Root, and Janczuk each made serious runs at Drellos' lead, but the 23-year-old was good enough to pull away each time. A multi-car crash on lap 150 involved Bublak, and when Bublak retired from the race at the final caution period on lap 162.

A 32-lap green-flag run closed out the race, which saw Drellos encounter heavy lapped traffic in the final frames. That, in turn, allowed Janczuk, Maresca, and Root to close in on the leader, all while putting on a thrilling race for the runner-up spot. Drellos, who holds the lead in the weekly Devil's Bowl championship point standings, ran to the landmark win for his third victory of the season at the Vermont track.

Root, who won the King of Dirt Racing Series event at Devil's Bowl last month, crossed the finish line in second place but was disqualified in post-race technical inspection for an infraction with his engine's rev limiter box.

Fonda Speedway champion Maresca, who was originally third, inherited the runner-up finish ahead of Utica-Rome Speedway champion Janczuk, Albany-Saratoga Speedway champion Hartman, and former Devil's Bowl asphalt Late Model champion Masterson. Jason Gray finished sixth after starting 25th, followed by Brian Calabrese, 15-year-old Payton Talbot, Frank Hoard III, and Tim LaDuc. Hartman collected a $50 Hard Charger bonus donated by race fans "Mac & The Bean Brothers" after driving from 30th starting position to gain 26 spots.

Veteran Sprint Car driver Scott Holcomb notched a big win with the 25-lap Sprint Cars of New England tour. The Granby, Conn., driver started on the outside of the front row and led every lap, but he was never assured of the victory until the checkered flag waved. Cory Sparks and Will Hull were catching Holcomb as the final laps arrived, just as Holcomb reached two-wide lapped traffic.

Hull swung wide to make a move for the lead and briefly drove off the backstretch with two laps to go, and Sparks made a three-wide bid up the middle in the final corner, but Holcomb held on for the win – his first at Devil's Bowl since an Empire Super Sprint victory on August 4, 1996.

Sparks finished second and Hull regrouped for third place. SCoNE point leader Chris Donnelly was fourth with Joe Kata fifth. Clay Dow was next in line, followed by Travis Billington, Matt Tanner, Adam Pierson, and Jake Williams. A strong field of 22 cars competed, and heats were won by Hull, Donnelly, and Brett Wright.

Rookie Troy Audet of Bridport, Vt., was a first-time winner in the Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint division, coming out on top of a two-segment, point-scored event held over the two-day Vermont 200 Weekend. Audet won the first 12-lap segment on Saturday, then finished fifth on Sunday for a combined low total score of six points (1st + 5th = 6 points).

Cody O'Brien, Samantha Mulready, and Austin Chaves were next in the official combined finish, each scoring seven total points; the tiebreaker that determined the overall finishing order was the order of the second-segment finish; O'Brien won the Sunday segment over John Smith, Mulready, Chaves, and Audet. Eleven-year-old Kaidin White finished fifth overall with eight points.

Devil's Bowl Speedway returns to action on Saturday, September 12 with another major event: The Slate Valley 100. Big Block and Small Block Modifieds will return for a 100-lap main event, along with the Northeast Crate Nationals for the King of Dirt Racing Crate Modified Series and the weekly O'Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman division. Sportsman Modified: Demetrios Drellos, of Queensbury, N.Y., started 21st and made his way through traffic to take the lead from Robert Bublak Jr. at lap 85. Drellos led the final 115 circuits to pocket the $7,500 top prize, and $3,376 in lap leader bonuses, totalling $10,876. Kevin Root finished second but was disqualified in post-race technical inspection. Mike Maresca, originally third at the finish, was moved up to the runner-up spot, followed by Matt Janczuk, Tim Hartman Jr., and rookie Josh Masterson. Sprint Cars of New England: Scott Holcomb of Granby, Conn., led every step of the way in the SCoNE field in a 25-lap feature, but held off a final-lap charge from both Cory Sparks and Will Hull in heavy lapped traffic. Holcomb's win was his first at Devil's Bowl Speedway since 1996. Jesse Pruchnik was uninjured in a flip during the race.

500cc Mini Sprint: Rookie Troy Audet of Bridport, Vt., was a first-time winner in a two-day, two-segment race. Audet combined a win in the first 12-lap segment on Saturday with a fifth-place effort in Sunday's second leg for a race-low total score of six points (1st + 5th =6 pts.) and the overall victory.

Over $300,000 up for grabs, Super DIRTcar Series September events canceled, Super DIRT Week postponed to 2021

WEEDSPORT, NY — Aug. 31, 2020 — 2020 continues to be a year without precedent. Given the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions — knowing NAPA Super DIRT Week just wouldn't be Super DIRT Week without thousands of spirited fans on location — DIRTcar Racing has scheduled a six-day extravaganza of the four premier Northeast divisions, spotlighting the Super DIRTcar Series. With purses and prize money totaling over $300,000, DIRTcar OktoberFAST will feature six tracks in six days, participants-only at track, broadcast live to fans around the world on DIRTVision from October 6-11.

New York State's COVID-19 restrictions have forced the four DIRTcar Northeast Series to wait to resume in 2021 but not without racing for big money in the cool October air. While competitors will be at the track, social distancing, and masking up for their safety, our fans will be able to enjoy this unparalleled week of racing from home on DIRTVision, the new home of the Super DIRTcar Series in 2021.

With the 49th annual NAPA Super DIRT Week postponed until 2021, tickets and camping will automatically carry over to Oct. 6-10, 2021. Fans may request a refund, but refunded camping sites and seats will be made available to the general public at superdirtweek.com in October.

What DIRTcar has put together is essentially an entire season in a week with six nights of Super DIRTcar Series racing supported by DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, Sportsman, and Pro Stocks.

"We want to keep the teams close to home by celebrating at our home tracks," said DIRTcar CEO Brian Carter. "We're putting it all on the line, investing the 2020 Series' point funds into prize money over the course of a single week so we can put 2020 behind us with a bang."

Six core, longstanding DIRTcar tracks are lined up to host these premier events. Generally, travel will be east to west with DIRTcar OktoberFAST kicking off on Tuesday, October 6, at the ever-exciting Albany-Saratoga Speedway with Big Blocks, Sportsman and Pro Stocks. From there the action picks back up in Vernon, NY on the wide, half-mile Utica-Rome Speedway on Wednesday night with Big Blocks, 358 Modifieds, and Pro Stocks.

Fulton, NY has been quiet in 2020, but on Thursday, October 8, the Super DIRTcar Series will shake up the town once again on the high banks of Fulton Speedway alongside the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds and Sportsman. Then, it's "The Nasty Track's" turn as Big Block, 358 Modified and Sportsman teams tow up to Can-Am Speedway for a Friday night spectacular on their racy new surface and configuration.

Land of Legends Raceway is the site of a Saturday night special. Big Blocks and Sportsman will tear up the historic half-mile oval in Canandaigua, NY on October, 10.

Sunday, October 11, the DIRTcar OktoberFAST finale takes the green for a 75-lap Big Block barn burner. Weedsport Speedway, the founding site of DIRTcar Northeast racing, will cap off this incredible one-time tour with a thrilling Sunday Spectacular including Sportsman and Pro Stocks.

Each night from Tuesday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 11, will be highlighted by two or three feature events. No weeklong champion will be named, but drivers will battle for over $300,000 in purse and prizes. Fans and friends of DIRTcar will also have the opportunity to contribute to Special Awards for the entire week.

2020 has become the most challenging year on record for racing and individuals alike. DIRTcar is proud to put together a program that tracks, competitors, and fans can enjoy as much as possible under the restrictions deployed by New York State at this time.

Unfortunately, the remaining races on the Super DIRTcar Series schedule in September have been canceled as a result of the COVID-19 crowd restrictions. Because of the limited racing, there will be no Series champions crowned in 2020. The spotlight will shine on the Hoosier Weekly Championship chase.

The canceled races were scheduled for Sept. 6 at Utica-Rome Speedway, Sept. 12 at Weedsport Speedway, Sept. 19 at Land of Legends Raceway, and finally September 26 at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. Series officials and track promoters are looking forward to getting back to Series racing in 2021.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 25, 2020) – NASCAR Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jim France today announced a key addition to the highest level of NASCAR's leadership team, appointing NASCAR President Steve Phelps to the Board of Directors. 

 

Steve Phelps becomes the fifth member of NASCAR's Board of Directors, joining France; Lesa France Kennedy, Executive Vice Chair; Mike Helton, Senior Advisor to NASCAR; and Gary Crotty, Chief Legal Officer.

 

"Steve's unwavering leadership and dedication to growing our sport through even the most challenging times has been remarkable," said Jim France. "Steve understands every part of our business and has demonstrated a consistently confident and steady presence in the face of adversity. He will be a valued and trusted addition to the Board of Directors as we work to build a stronger NASCAR for our fans and our sport."
