DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 5, 2016) – Hunter Baize closed out his rookie campaign with a bang, winning the 2016 Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award.

Baize became the fourth consecutive HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks driver to win the award.

The 19-year old beat teammate Tyler Dippel by seven points (90-83) and Spencer Davis by 11 points to take home the prestigious title.

"It feels great to win the Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award," the Bremen, Kentucky, native said. "The competition in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East this year was really good. I had to battle Tyler and Spencer for the title, but the entire rookie class, like Harrison Burton and Dominique Van Wieringen, was really talented."

The Sunoco Rookie of the Year winner earned one top five and 10 top 10 finishes enroute to a fourth place finish in the 2016 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East final standings.

"We had a good year," said Baize. "I felt like I was pretty consistent, showed good speed and overcame issues. HScott and my team always gave me a good car and equipment, we just had some bad luck. But I always felt like we could go out there and be competitive."

The 2016 season saw 31 talented young drivers competing for the elite rookie title in the K&N Pro Series East.

Rookies accounted for five wins, with Austin Cindric, Spencer Davis, Tyler Dippel and Todd Gilliland all visiting Victory Lane throughout the year.

Baize took home his career-best K&N Pro Series East finish, fifth, at Iowa Speedway in July.

The highest finishing rookie in a race receives 10 points, second receives nine, third gets eight and so on.

Earning the Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors in the K&N Pro Series East has gone a long way toward advancing a driver's career in recent seasons. Starting with Logano in 2007, every Sunoco Rookie of the Year in the series have gone on to compete in NASCAR's national series, including five drivers – Logano, Austin Dillon (2008), Alex Bowman (2011) and Larson who are full-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series as well as last year's winner William Byron who is contending for the 2016 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship and will pilot a car for Hendrick Motorsports in the NASCAR XFINITY Series next season.

"It's a great honor to win this award," Baize said. "Midway through the season we saw it was possible to win it and we set out to get it. It's a huge accomplishment."

Baize will be formally recognized as the 2016 Sunoco Rookie of the Year at the NASCAR Touring Series Awards on Saturday, Dec. 10 in the Charlotte (N.C.) Convention Center at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

RACING AT SPEEDWAY 51 IN GROVETON

The 2016 racing season for area short tracks will come to an end this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Speedway 51 in Groveton, New Hampshire with the running of the 2^nd Annual Fall Brawl weekend presented by Perras Ace Hardware and Bruno's Pizza.

The three day weekend will start off on Friday with a special season ending event for the North Country Family Restaurant Go Karting Series. All area Go Karting teams are invited to participate in this family fun event. The weekly karting series had an outstanding race season as close to thirty Karts participated each.

On Saturday morning the pits open at 8am for the North Country Ford Late Models, and 9am for all other divisions. Saturday will feature qualifying for all divisions. Post time on Saturday is 1:30pm. . The pits will reopen on Sunday morning at 8:30am, a spotters meeting will be held at 9:30am for all Late Model spotters. Sunday post time is 1pm. Joining the North Country Ford Late Models, will be the Sign Depot Tigers, Schweppes Street Stocks, A.B. Excavating Daredevils, White Mountain Community College Pure Stocks and the North East Cyclones. The highlight of the weekend will be the North Country Ford Late Model Fall Brawl 151, featuring 151 green flag laps of racing for the ACT type Late Models.

Brandt Graham Seals the Deal with His First Sportsman Cup Series Championship

A time-honoured adage tells us "good things come to those who wait" and when Mother Nature dictated that the 2016 Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series finale would be delayed by a week, Brandt Graham took it all in stride. The young, second-generation racer from Orono, Ontario was the odds-on favourite to claim this year's point championship and if a far from desirable weather forecast for the originally scheduled run meant a week's delay, that's how it would have to be.

"It was just one of those things that sometimes happen and there wasn't anything we could do about it," said Brandt Graham. "We were already well on our way to the track when we got word that because of the expected rain and possible thunderstorms, they'd made the decision to throw in the towel for the day. We got off the highway, made sure the rest of the team knew what was happening and then headed back home."

With having the car back in the shop for a week between the postponement and the make-up date, the driver; along with his father and his grandfather had to make sure they didn't over-engineer their ride for the championship charge. The #14 team already had a pair of Flamboro Speedway starts and pre-season test session as the basis for their raceday set-up, so other than going through their checklist a couple of times, they basically left the car alone.

Knowing that his 17-point lead was anything but an insurmountable advantage, Brandt Graham had the knowledge that he'd need to run a smart race when the tour returned to the venerable Hamilton, Ontario area raceway for the season's last dance Saturday, September 24^th. Graham time-trialed in 5^th spot and would take the green on the outside of the front row after the pre-race 'Fast 5' redraw.

"We may have been the favourite to take the championship, but it was hardly a walk in the park," admitted the 18 year-old, who recently began post secondary studies in the Trades Fundamentals Program at Durham College, in Oshawa. "I had a realistic shot at winning the title, but the other drivers in the field were also looking to improve their overall finishing position in the final standings. A lot can happen in a 100 lap race and we had to hope for the best."

At the checkered flag, the team's equipment may have shown more battle scars than they might have liked, but Brandt Graham still logged a 3^rd place finish and the spot on the podium was enough to clinch the title for the sophomore standout, becoming the youngest champion in the history of the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series. The final margin between Graham and the second place point finisher was 22 markers.

"It was a great season and I almost can't believe how successful we were," said Graham after claiming the title. "Our team worked so hard throughout the year and I really appreciate the support my family, friends and fans. It'll take a while for things to sink-in, but this is an experience I'll savour for many years to come. It'll be nice to relax for a while and then start thinking about next year."

John Baker Jr. Takes Sunset Speedway Win; Clinches 2016 OMRS Title

The Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – ran their final event of the year over 2 days – Saturday, September 24^th and Sunday, September 25^th – at Sunset Speedway. A total of 15 of the popular open wheeled racing machines signed-in to tackle the race track north of Toronto and the 2016 season wrapped-up the same way as it had begun.

With Alex Lees and Chris Burrows on the front row, the OMRS teams took to the track for the final time of the year in a 30 lap feature that would determine the final standings for the tour. Even though he came from the middle of the field, it didn't take long for John Baker Jr. to work his way through the pack and grab the top spot. The crowd favourite came away with his 7^th win of the season to clinch the overall title. Winning the race also came with a bit of drama, as the #63 machine developed a mechanical issue midway through the 3^rd and 4^th turns and needed to be towed to victory lane for the customary post-race photo session.

Baker was followed across the line by Chris Burrows, Mark Gordon, Stu Robinson Jr. and Cory Horner. Alex Lees, Ryan Dick, Rob Warnes, Gary Elliott, Connor James, Randy Hollingsworth, Adam Hagan, Rick Warnes, Ryan Babin and Willow Barberstock completed the finishing order.

Qualify heats at Sunset Speedway were won by Chris Burrows, Mark Gordon and John Baker Jr., with a pair.

The year's OMRS Championship Celebration awards presentation banquet will be held Saturday, November 12^th.

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series notebook: In honour of his father Doug, who had recently passed away, Rick Warnes made the year's final start in a car that had been repainted purple and carried the #90 that his dad had made popular throughout his career…Late Model stand-out Mark Gordon took his first-ever OMRS green flag, wheeling a machine that had been run by Brad Stevenson earlier in the year to a 3^rdplace finish…Although he was missing from the heat races run during the first day of action, veteran Gary Elliott was added to the starting line-up for the Sunday afternoon feature event and finished 9^th.

Central Ontario's motorsports community knows no other event that compares to the 24^th Annual Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – at Peterborough Speedway. The 3-day late season spectacular – Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 7^th to 9^th – brings 10 action-packed racing divisions to fight it out on Canada's Toughest 3^rd of a Mile Paved Oval for a combination of prestige and bragging rights that will last through a driver's entire career.

With 116 laps on the agenda, the Pro Late Model feature event that will close-out the 24^th edition of the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing is nearly 50 circuits longer than any of the weekend's other 'A' mains. Teams won't only be looking for a checkered flag of their own, they'll also be looking to put an end to a win streak by Shawn Chenoweth. Beginning with last year's APC Series tour stop, the Ayr, Ontario native has owned a 3 race win streak at the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road, west of the Liftlock City.

"I don't feel like there's any pressure on me to win again. The Pro Late Model division has some of the most talented drivers in the province, so its really anyone's ballgame," said the 32 year-old Chenoweth, who recently clinched the division championship at Flamboro Speedway. "The team will use the practice sessions and qualifying events to put together the best possible set-up for our equipment. All we can do is prepare the car as best we can and approach the weekend's event the same way as we have in the past."

Chenoweth – who finished 3^rd in this year's APC Pro Late Model Series standings – says he'll be bringing a brand new piece into action at the Autumn Colours Classic, while Andy Kamrath, who himself is a former Jiffy Lube Mini Stock champion of the event has rented the car that found its way to the 3 straight Peterborough Speedway wins.

The 24th Annual Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – gets underway Friday, October 7^th and continues throughout the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend at Peterborough Speedway. The opening day's activities will include pre-race inspection and practice, along with opening round qualifying for the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, Paul Davis Systems Thunder Car, Late Model, Pro Late Model and OSCAAR Modified divisions; as well as the APC Auto Parts Young Guns Races in the Mini Stock and Thunder Car classes. Pit gates will open at 10:00, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and racing getting underway at 6:00.

Sweet Repeat in Northfield Savings Bank 54^th Vermont Milk Bowl

Barre, VT – Nick Sweet of Barre successfully defended his title in the Northfield Savings Bank Milk Bowl at Thunder Road, using a pair of wins in the three 50-lap segments to claim a two-point victory in the combined standings over Jason Corliss of Barre. It was the third Thunder Road Late Model Sportsmen Milk Bowl victory of Sweet's career.

Corliss needed to finish within three positions of Sweet in the final race to earn the victory. He had a chance to move into fourth place, and claim the Milk Bowl crown, in the final laps of the third race, but couldn't find his way through traffic and ended up in seventh place in the segment, and second place overall.

Trampas Demers of South Burlington finished in third place, and was followed in the top 10 by Cody Blake of Barre, Kyle Pembroke of Montpelier, 2016 King of the Road Scott Dragon of Milton, Jimmy Hebert of Williamstown, Scott Payea of Milton, Shawn Fleury of Middlesex, and Alex Labbe of St-Albert, Quebec.

A total of 38 cars attempted to qualify for the 30-car main event field.

Brendan Moodie of Wolcott put together a pair of top-three finishes to claim the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen Mini Milk Bowl. Moodie followed up his third-place finish in the opening 30-lap race Saturday with a second-place finish Sunday to finish one point in front of Cameron Ouellette of Barre and Dave Finck of Barre (both at six points) in the combined standings. Ouellete claimed the runner-up spot with his better finish in segment 2.

Trevor Lyman of Hinesburg, Stephen Donahue of Graniteville, Jason Woodard of Waterbury Ctr., Jaden Perry of Hardwick, Brian Delphia of Duxbury, Mark Barnier of Essex Jct., and Jason Pelkey of Barre rounded out the top 10. Finck was the winner of Saturday's opening segment, while Donahue claimed the checkers Sunday.

In the Allen Lumber Street Stocks Mini Milk Bowl, Nick Pilotte of Jefferson, NH followed up a second-place finish in Saturday's opening 25-lap segment with a tenth-place finish Saturdayand finished one point ahead of five drivers in the overall standings.

Matthew Smith of Essex Jct., winner of Sunday's 25-lap segment, claimed second place in the group tiebreaker by virtue of his higher finish in the second race. Alan Maynard of Fairfax (third overall), rookie Cooper Bouchard of Hinesburg (fourth) and Kevin Streeter of Waitsfield (fifth) rounded out the top five. Streeter was the winner of Saturday's 25-lapper.

Finishing sixth through tenth were Jamie Davis of Wolcott, Brandon Gray of E. Thetford, Garry Bashaw of Lincoln, Michael Gay of So. Burlington, and William Hennequin of Hardwick.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee, 2 octobre 2016 - Raphaël Lessard, 15 ans, a signé une 3^e place lors de la 32^e édition du 2016 All-American 400 presented by Freman-Webb Companies au Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville au Tennessee. C'était la 4^ecourse hors championnat de Lessard cette année, toujours au volant de sa Toyota Camry dans la catégorie Super Late Model.

Le pilote de Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce a failli ne pas prendre part à la course de dimanche alors qu'une sortie de piste provoquée par un bris mécanique lors d'essais privés mardi dernier a endommagée la voiture. Il s'est classé 29^e lors de la qualification samedi, soit une position au delà du couperet pour une place garantie au départ de la course. Finalement, lors d'une course de la dernière chance samedi soir, il est parti en première position et a mené l'épreuve de 20 tours jusqu'au damier, s'assurant donc de partir en 29^e place sur 32 voitures lors de la course de 400 tours.

Au cours des 70 premiers tours, Raphaël a effectué une impressionnante remontée, passant de la 29^eposition à la 15^e. Plusieurs drapeaux jaunes sont venus ponctuer cette course et ont parfois avantagé Lessard, d'autre fois moins. Par ailleurs, lors d'une relance, le pilote de la Toyota Camry #99 FRL Express/Team Coach Imaging/Toyota/JBLAudiopréparée par l'équipe David Gilliland Racing est reparti en première position, mais n'a su garder sa position bien longtemps alors qu'il n'avait pas fait de changement de pneus à ce moment-là.

Seulement 13 voitures ont terminé la course, et lors d'une finale spectaculaire, Raphaël s'est assuré la 3^eplace à 18 tours de la fin. « C'était une super course, je suis quand même satisfait même si nous n'avons pas gagné l'épreuve. Ça a été une semaine difficile après l'incident en piste de mardi dernier. La voiture allait très mal et c'est pour cela que nous avons eu de la difficulté en qualification. L'équipe de David Gilliland n'a pas arrêté de travailler sur la voiture, je suis tellement fière du travail qu'ils ont accompli ».

Lors de l'épreuve, Raphaël a usé de stratégie pour monter sur le podium : « Durant la course, nous avions droit de changer 6 pneus, nous avons gardé le changement des 4 pneus pour plus tard dans la course, alors on a eu un avantage à la fin. C'était une course très longue, mais très intense, nous étions souvent trois de large, c'était excitant! ». Bubba Pollard et Derek Thorn ont terminé respectivement 1er et 2e de cette course, avec 3,7 et 2,5 secondes d'avance sur Raphaël.

La prochaine course de Raphaël sera dimanche le 9 octobre prochain pour une autre épreuve hors championnat au Winchester Speedway à Winchester, Indiana, pour une autre course de 400 tours.

Barre, VT – Former Milk Bowl winner Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. of Hudson, NH gave himself a head start on a second crown by earning the Booth Bros./H.P. Hood Pole Award at Barre's Thunder Road on Saturday, October 1 for Sunday's 54^th Vermont Milk Bowl presented by Northfield Savings Bank.

The 2014 ACT Late Model Tour champion circled the ¼-mile high banks in 13.169 seconds during time trials, earning himself a $1,000 bonus from Booth Bros. and H.P. Hood in the process. Hinesburg, VT's Bobby Therrien will start on his outside after turning a fast lap of 13.224 seconds.

Two-time and defending Vermont Milk Bowl winner Nick Sweet of Barre, VT will start third after winning the first of two 50-lap qualifying races. Sweet came out on top of a back-and-forth battle with former Milk Bowl pole sitter Trampas Demers, taking the lead for good on the race's final restart with three laps remaining.

Demers finished second with Cody Blake third. Phil Scott, Kyle Pembroke, Alex Labbe, and Matt White finished fourth through seventh, while Todd Davis nipped Dave Whitcomb at the line for the final transfer spot.

Jason Corliss emerged the victor in the second 50-lap qualifier, edging 2016 Thunder RoadLate Model Champion Scott Dragon by just 0.015 seconds after a late restart. Jimmy Hebert took third, with Shawn Fleury, Scott Payea, Marcel J. Gravel, Mike Bailey, and Brooks Clark also transferring into the Milk Bowl.

Devin O'Connell, John Donahue, Luke Hinkley, Ricky Roberts, Jason Allen, Lance Allen, Whitcomb, and Chip Grenier fell back on their time trial speeds to fill starting positions 19-26. The balance of the 30-car field will be set in the last-chance "B" feature on Sunday, October 2.

Barre's Dave Finck captured Segment 1 of the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman Mini Milk Bowl. Finck started on the pole after posting the fast time in time trials and was never seriously challenged in the 30-lap event.

Fellow Barre driver Cameron Ouellette finished second, followed by Brendan Moodie in third. Trevor Lyman, Jason Woodard, Joe Steffen, Jaden Perry, Brian Delphia, Joey Laquerre, and 2016 Tiger Sportsman Champion Stephen Donahue completed the top-10.

Waitsfield's Kevin Streeter was the winner of Segment 1 of the Allen Lumber Street Stock Mini Milk Bowl, taking the lead from Nick Pilotte following the event's only restart on lap five and cruising to the win. Pilotte held off Brandon Gray for second. Peyton Lanphear, Cooper Bouchard, Thomas Merchant, Michael Gay, Jamie Davis, Alan Maynard, and Will Hennequin also earned top-10 finishes.

The 54^th Vermont Milk Bowl presented by Northfield Savings Bank will be held Sunday, October 2 with a 1:00pm post time. The Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman and Allen Lumber Street Stocks will also run segment 2 of their Mini Milk Bowls. Admission is $30 for adults and free for children 12 and under.

Le fils de Martin Roy remporte le titre en RevStar Slingshot Jr

Napierville, le 28 septembre 2016 - Le jeune pilote Félix Roy a fait sensation dans sa discipline cette année. Vendredi dernier, il a raflé le championnat de la série RevStar Slingshot Jr, à sa saison recrue dans cette catégorie.

Félix, fils cadet de Martin Roy, pilote et propriétaire de l'équipe King Autosport en NASCAR Xfinity, a amassé pas moins de huit victoires et deux podiums en 14 courses cette année. Vendredi dernier, au RPM Speedway de Saint-Marcel-de-Richelieu, il a remporté sa plus récente et plus importante victoire pour mettre la main sur le titre de champion panquébécois 2016 dans la catégorie junior, réservée aux pilotes de moins de 14 ans.

« Je suis très heureux de remporter le championnat des pilotes, surtout à ma première année en Slingshot. Lors de ma dernière course, j'avais une très petite avance au classement. Je devais gagner. Je me suis concentré sur ma course, et j'ai réussi! », a raconté le jeune pilote âgé de 11 ans, qui avait couru en karting sur circuit routier et sur terre battue avant de compétitionner en classe Slingshot, une série qui voit évoluer plusieurs pilotes de la relève.

Félix, au volant la voiture Gamache/Côté/Entreposage Fantastik n°91, s'est surtout distingué sur les grands ovales sur terre battue et sur asphalte. « J'étais très fort sur les longues pistes, mais j'avais parfois un peu plus de difficulté à courir sur les mini-ovales, où il y avait beaucoup de trafic et où ça poussait pas mal. Mais vendredi, sur la petite piste de Saint-Marcel, j'ai réussi à bien gérer ma course pour remporter le championnat », a-t-il déclaré.

« La voiture avait été préparée dans le but de rouler à l'extérieur du circuit, a expliqué son père. Nous avons fait le pari qu'il y aurait une bonne ligne de course à l'extérieur, et ça a bien fonctionné pour Félix, qui n'a pas eu froid aux yeux », de dire Martin Roy, qui a lui aussi couru sur terre battue pendant de nombreuses années, ayant remporté le championnat provincial en Modifiés en 2005, avant de faire le saut en NASCAR. Félix peut aussi compter sur Éric Laperle, bien connu du milieu du stock-car, qui agit en tant que chef d'équipe.

Les plans ne sont pas finalisés pour la prochaine saison, mais Félix Roy entend bien encore une fois surprendre par ses performances et souhaite s'inscrire parmi les pilotes de la relève à surveiller dans les prochaines années.
