The Streets of Toronto Kick off Summer Campaign for NASCAR Pinty's Series

 

While Treyten Lapcevich has held a firm grip on the checkered flags throughout the first third of the season, the months of July and August are where championships can be made and lost.

 

The 19-year-old has won three of the first four races, claiming victory in the season opener at Sunset Speedway, at the first road course race of the year at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP), and the most recent race at Eastbound International Speedway, in Newfoundland & Labrador. 

 

The only race he has not won, was at Autodrome Chaudière where reigning champion, Marc-Antoine Camirand took the checkered flag. Lapcevich still finished second. 

 

"It's really solid momentum to start the season," said Lapcevich. "We had a lot of bad luck plague our 2022 season so hopefully we can keep logging these consistent finishes, run up front week in and week out and we'll be there at the end of the year."

 

Now for the fifth stop of the 2023 season, the series heads to Exhibition Place for the Tiffany Gate Grand Prix of Toronto. 

 

One of the biggest race weekends in Canada will feature several of the country's best drivers battling it out through the tight turns on the Streets of Toronto. 

  

Only three drivers have won the Grand Prix of Toronto - Andrew Ranger (3), Alex Tagliani (2), and defending race winner Kevin Lacroix (2). 

 

Last year, it was Lacroix, in the No. 74 Dodge who dominated, leading 29 of 35 laps, en-route to his second victory of the season with Ranger and L.P. Dumoulin filling out the podium. 

 

Now, Lacroix sits second in the standings, 23 points behind Lapcevich, as the series enters its busiest, and arguably challenging point of the season. 

 

Following the Tiffany Gate Grand Prix of Toronto, teams will head west to Alberta and Saskatchewan for three races, one at Edmonton International Raceway (Wetaskiwin, AB), and two at Sutherland Automotive Speedway (Saskatoon, SK). 

 

The month of August features the historic race on the Streets of Trois-Rivières, QC, two dirt races at Ohsweken Speedway, and the airport tarmac road course of Circuit ICAR. 

 

Alex Guenette, who has been a dark horse so far this year, claimed his first series win last year at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières, while Lapcevich will look to go back-to-back at Ohsweken Speedway after winning the inaugural event. 

 

This season the single dirt event has been expanded into a doubleheader on Monday, August 14, and Tuesday, August 15, with the series celebrating its 200th race on the second night. 

 

To kick off the final month, September starts with the last road course of the season, returning to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, where Camirand mathematically clinched his 2022 Championship with a victory. 

 

Delaware Speedway will once again host the season finale and set the stage for crowning a champion. 

 

Free Admission for Honda Indy's Fan Friday

 

The Tiffany Gate Grand Prix of Toronto will highlight Honda Indy's Fan Friday event. Fans will be able to attend the NASCAR Pinty's race for free with a voluntary donation to Make-A-Wish Canada. 

 

To date, a cumulative total of $905,000 has been raised and each dollar will go toward granting wishes for children living with critical illnesses.

 

After the Tiffany Gate Grand Prix of Toronto, the inaugural REV & RUN event, where runners and walkers will take to the Honda Indy course. A number of NASCAR Pinty's drivers are set to take part in the event, including L.P. Dumoulin and D.J. Kennington.

  • Canadian National Go-Karting Champion, Darryl Timmers, is set to make his series debut this Friday in the No. 98 CURB Records/Darkhorse Trailer Chevrolet. 
  • A number of road course ringers return to the series, including father-son duo, Peter and Gary Klutt, Daniel Bois, Matthew Scannell, J.F. Laberge, and the eldest Dumoulin brother, J.F. 
  • Other notable drivers who are local to the Toronto area are Trevor Monaghan, Sam Fellows, and Kyle Steckly.
  • The Tiffany Gate Grand Prix of Toronto at Exhibition Place will stream live on TSN+ in Canada and on FloRacing in the United States at 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, July 14, 2023. The race will broadcast on tape delay on TSN on Sunday, July 23 at 3:00 p.m. ET and on RDS2 on Sunday, July 30 at 11:00 a.m. ET.

As the local motorsports calendar continues to heat-up, teams with the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series, presented by GEN-3 Electrical are getting ready for a pair of back-to-back events at Peterborough Speedway.

 

Fresh from the first of this year's 3 dates at Flamboro Speedway – where a pair of past champions John Baker Jr. and Alex Cuzzilla shared the checkered flags in the group's pair of feature events and emerged in a 1st place tie, with Tyler Bouillon, Andrew Massey, Bob Franks, Rick Warnes, Rob Warnes and Randy Hollingsworth rounding-out the overall finishing order – everyone is looking forward to getting back to the venue known as Canada's Toughest 3rd Mile, the unofficial home track of OMRS.

 

"This will be our second show of the year at Peterborough Speedway," said Ontario Modifieds Racing Series racer and spokesperson Rick Warnes. "After running only a couple of dates over the first 7 weekends of the season, having dates at the same track over consecutive Saturday nights will be a big test for our drivers and their equipment, but I'm sure they'll be up to the task."

 

Warnes says the Flamboro feature races created a very tight point race and the upcoming Peterborough Speedway dates could go a long way to helping determine the group's overall 2023 championship. John Baker Jr. leads the point standings at 178, with Alex Cuzzilla 2nd at 174. Bob Franks, Rick Warnes and Randy Hollingsworth round-out the top 5.

 

Following the July 15th and 22nd series stops at Peterborough, OMRS teams will return to Flamboro Saturday, August 5th before being part of the Fan Appreciation Night – Saturday, August 12th – at Peterborough. The 2nd annual Bill Pickford Memorial is at Flamboro this year Saturday, August 26th. The 2023 Ontario Modifieds Racing Series, presented by GEN-3 Electrical season concludes with the Saturday, September 2nd Championship Clash at Peterborough and a Friday, October 6th debut at the Autumn Colours Classic.

Alex Tagliani Dominates on the Streets of Toronto

Alex Tagliani led 30 of the 35-lap race to win the Tiffany Gate Grand Prix of Toronto and his first of the 2023 season.

Starting on the pole, the No.18 St. Hubert/NTN/Qwick Wick/Genatec Chevrolet's victory was not without contest. The No. 74 NAPA Auto Parts/Valvoline Dodge of Kevin Lacroix and the No. 27 GM Paillé of Andrew Ranger, both gave Tagliani a run for his money.

Ranger was the only other driver to lead a lap during the race, taking the lead away from Tagliani for five laps around the 1.786-mile street course.

It wasn't until the final lap that Lacroix had his chance to run away with the win, finally getting to Tagliani's door coming off of the Lakeshore straightaway.

But in the end, he was no match for the No. 18 Chevrolet who sailed away with his third win on the Streets of Toronto.

"It was a really good race for us, big credit to the team," said Tagliani. "Lots of people put effort into this, these days in NASCAR it's so competitive that even if you are good on a road course, if you don't have the car, you can be seventh, it's still a good seventh because it's such a good field and strong field."

The field only saw two cautions, which both came within the first 15 laps of the race. Dexter Stacey in the No. 92 ReCap/Bully's Truck Stop Chevrolet brought out the first caution when a failed transmission ended his day early.

On the following restart, Rookie of the Year contender, Thomas Nepveu, who was running in and around the top-five, had a problem and was unable to get up to speed which led to fellow Rookie, Kyle Steckly making contact with him.

Unlike Stacey, Nepveu was able to continue after making repairs, however, he finished the race two laps down in 18th.

Coming home in third was the No. 96 GM Paillé/Chevrolet Canada Chevrolet of Marc-Antoine Camirand, who started the race in 18th after an issue in practice caused him to miss qualifying.

L.P Dumoulin and Ranger rounded out the top five, with points leader Treyten Lapcevich, J.P. Bergeron, Alex Guenette, D.J. Kennington, and Matthew Scannell rounding out the top-ten.

Saturday, July 15th Peterborough Speedway celebrates completing 50% of this year's regular season with the Pure Country 105 Mid-Season Bash. Everyone knows the best parties only happen once a year. NASCAR Announces Nominees for NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2024


Seven-time champions Johnson, Knaus and Alabama Gang's Donnie Allison join ballot

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 12, 2023) — NASCAR today announced the 15 nominees for the NASCAR Hall of Fame's Class of 2024 and the five nominees for the Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR.

 

Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion duo Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus join the Modern Era ballot together in their first year of eligibility. Donnie Allison, an original member of the fan-favorite Alabama Gang joins the Pioneer ballot for the first time.

 

Ten nominees appear on the Modern Era ballot, five on the Pioneer ballot – designed to honor those whose careers began more than 60 years ago. Two Modern Era candidates and one Pioneer candidate will be elected as the Class of 2024.

 

Longtime NASCAR executive Les Richter joins the Landmark Award ballot for the first time after being on the Hall of Fame ballot three times before the award was created. The Landmark Award honors those who made significant contributions to the growth and esteem of NASCAR.

 

The NASCAR Hall of Fame Voting Panel will meet in person to discuss and vote for the Class of 2023 and Landmark Award on Wednesday, Aug. 2.  The 61-person panel remains unchanged from last year, apart from reigning champion Joey Logano who replaces Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott (both voted last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic delay). The 62nd vote goes to winners of a NASCAR.com Fan Vote (www.nascar.com/halloffame). The Fan Vote is currently open and will close on July 30 at 12:00 a.m. ET.

 

The Modern Era Ballot and Landmark Award nominees were selected by the Nomination Committee, which consists of representatives from NASCAR and the NASCAR Hall of Fame, track owners from major facilities and historic short tracks. The Honors Committee, largely comprised of all living Hall of Famers, Landmark Award winners and Squier-Hall Award winners, selected the Pioneer Ballot.

Decision of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel - No. 96

(July 11, 2023) The National Motorsports Appeals Panel today heard and considered an appeal of a P4 penalty issued on June 14, 2023, to crew chief Robin McCluskey, driver Marc-Antoine Camirand and owner Jean-Claude Paillé in the NASCAR Pinty's Series.

The penalty concerns the following section of the 2023 NASCAR Pinty's Series Rule Book: Section 20.E.12.2. The penalties assessed were the loss of 18 NASCAR Pinty's Series Championship Driver and Owner Points and a $2,500 fine, one race suspension, and probation until Dec. 31, 2023, to the crew chief.

Upon hearing the testimony, the decisions of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel are:

  1. That the Appellant violated the Rule(s) set forth in the Penalty Notice.
  2. That the Panel upholds the original Penalties assessed by NASCAR.

The Appeals Panel members for this hearing:

  • Mr. Thomas DeLoach
  • Mr. Hunter Nickell
  • Mr. Kevin Whitaker

The Appellant has the right to appeal the decision of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel to the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer in accordance with the NASCAR Rule Book.

50-lap Bone Stock 'A' Main the Featured Attraction at Peterborough Speedway

Mother Nature may have turned-up the heat through the week. Saturday, July 8th Peterborough Speedway added some summertime action to the mix, as Attersley Tirecraft in Port Perry, Peterborough and Oshawa presented a night of home track action that included a 50-lap feature tilt for the Bone Stock field.

 

The night's opening round of feature race action rolled to the line with Jordan DesRoches and Stephen Bierworth on the front row for a 20-lap Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck headliner. DesRoches took the early lead but his time at the front of the field was short-lived, as Kyle Gordon took over the top spot with only a couple of circuits on the scoreboard. Gordon had moved out to about a half a straightaway advantage with 5 laps complete, as Chad Strawn worked to chase down the leader from his starting spot deep in the pack. As Gordon continued to lead, Strawn clicked-off position after position. He closed on the frontrunner but couldn't get close enough to take the lead. Gordon picked-up the win, with Strawn, Kurt Batty, Shawn Murray and DesRoches completing the top 5.

 

The first of a pair of Kingsway Auto Centre Junior Late Model features was next, with Gracelynn MacInnes and Lyla Sikma leading the rookie runners to the line. At the drop of the green flag, Sikma took the lead and never looked back as the division's point leader took her first ever feature win. Avery Kirkpatrick, MacInnes and Praxton Sellers rounded-out the running order.

 

Tegan Stanley and Christen Lavalle brought a field of a dozen Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock machines to the Great Canadian RV green flag for the night's 50-lap main event. Jake Kelly jumped out to an early lead, with Stanley falling-in behind. Kyle Novis got inside Stanley for the runner-up spot as the field started to put some of the backmarkers a lap down. A pack of slower cars that was fighting for their own positions got together at the exit of the 2nd turn, bringing out a red flag for the multi-car wreck. Before the race could be restarted, track officials sent the No. 9 of last week's winner Sean Kennedy pit-side to have a suspected oil leak checked-out. Returning to the track at the back of the pack, Kennedy put on a clinic, running the outside line to perfection and executing a precision 3-car pass with 28 laps complete. While Kennedy was charging to the front, the race had a new leader with less than 10 laps remaining, as Novis wrestled the lead away from Kelly. Kennedy got as high as 2nd but ran out of time as the No. 21 Mini Cooper of Novis took the win. Kelly hung on for 3rd, with Stanley and John Bates next across the line.

In post race inspection, Tegan Stanley's No. 23 was found to have an issue with the front springs, while the No. 09 of Cory Horne had an engine infraction. Both cars were disqualified and the finishing order was adjusted.

 

With 20 laps on the table, the Jiffy Lube Super Stock hit the track as Mark Gordon and Brandon Feeney brought the field to the line. Like his son did earlier in the night with the team's Renegade Truck, Gordon grabbed the lead right from the hop. Early in the going, Feeney was looking to the inside line to take the position from the leader. Miles Tyson moved into the 3rd spot with 4 laps complete and set his sights on the lead duo. He'd take the runner-up spot from Feeney with about a handful of laps remaining and closed on Gordon. The pair came together coming through the 3rd and 4th turns, with Tyson being sent to the rear. Gordon picked-up the win, with Feeney, Donovan Price, Paul Boundy and Clayton Reed completing the fast 5.

 

With only the Pro Junior Late Model and Canadian Legend Car Series main events left to run, showers moved into area and forced the balance of the night's program to be postponed. Track officials will look at potential dates to add the remaining features to the upcoming schedule.

 

Qualifying saw Renegade Truck heat race wins by Kyle Gordon, Kurt Batty, Stephen Bierworth and Chad Strawn. Samuel Arnott, Jacob Kelly, Tegan Stanley and Sean Kennedy had preliminary round Bone Stock victories. Lyla Sikma had both Rookie Junior Late Model wins. Cole Cousineau scored a pair of Pro Junior Late Model opening round wins, with the others going to Chase and Carson Cousineau. Mark Gordon and Miles Tyson took the Super Stock heat race victories. Canadian Legend Car Series qualifying rounds went to Dawson Drimmie, Matt Haufe, Adam Cuthbertson and Cole McFadden.

 

All posted finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review and post-race safety and technical inspection.

 

Bullring bullet points: Veteran campaigner and owner of Kingsway Auto Centre – sponsor of the Junior Late Model division – Dwight Lavoie took a turn at the controls of the No. 00 Bone Stock, with Kyle Novis wheeling the No. 21 machine…with periodic sprinkles, track officials made the decision to postpone the scheduled King of the Hill timed spectator laps…The tough luck continued for Super Stock racer Gerrit Tiemersma who had another night of action sidelined by mechanical issues…13-year-old Amber Wallis of Alma, Ontario made her Peterborough Speedway debut in the No. 36w Canadian Legend Car ride…Special thanks to the team at Attersley Tirecraft who brought a group of staff members and customers to the track.

 

Next on the 2023 schedule at Canada's Toughest 3rd Mile Oval will be the Mid-Season Bash – presented by Pure Country 105 – Saturday, July 15th. On track action will be highlighted by a 50-lap feature event for the Ontario Outlaw Super Late Models. The night's line-up will also include the home track Bone Stock, Mini Stock and Late Model divisions, plus the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series. Kid's rides will be the intermission feature. Pit gates will open at 2:30, grandstands at 5:00 with the first green flag at 6:00.

 

The Autism Awareness Night – in support of the Canadian National Autism Foundation – that was postponed Saturday, June 24th has been added to the July 15th schedule.

Kyle Gordon (No. 52) added another checkered flag to his 2023 stats with a win in the Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck feature – Saturday, July 8th – at Peterborough Speedway.

 

After a pair of heat race wins, Lyla Sikma (No. 20) picked-up her first career Kingsway Auto Centre Junior Late Model feature victory – Saturday, July 8th – at Peterborough Speedway.

 

The Mini Cooper was the class of the field as Kyle Novis (No. 21) earned the 50-lap Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock feature win – Saturday, July 8th – at Peterborough Speedway.

 

Mark Gordon (No. 52) found his way to the winner's circle following the 20-lap Jiffy Lube Super Stock feature tilt – Saturday, July 8th – at Peterborough Speedway.

LA SOIRÉE AUDACE TRIFLUVIENNE DU SAMEDI 5 AOUT DANS LE PARC PORTUAIRE DE TROIS-RIVIÈRES

Trois-Rivières, le jeudi 6 juillet 2023 - Grâce à l'appui d'une douzaine d'entreprises de la région, le Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières pourra encore offrir cette année une grande fête gratuite et grand public le samedi 5 août prochain au Parc Portuaire de Trois-Rivières. Sous le thème Audace Trifluvienne, cette soirée sera l'hôte de la plus grande envolée aéromusicale publique au Canada mettant en lumière 400 drones simultanément. Comme lors de la trentaine d'éditions précédentes, ce sont les artisans de la firme québécoise Royal Pyrotechnie qui illumineront le ciel de Trois-Rivières. Cette fois-ci, cependant, avec les 400 drones de leur division Fusion Drone Shows,  ils le feront sans mettre le feu aux poudres. 

« Avec les enjeux de qualité de l'air et d'inflammabilité amené par la sécheresse et les feux de forêt que le Québec connaît, nous avons réalisé qu'il fallait voir s'il n'y avait pas moyen d'émerveiller les gens avec autre chose que des feux d'Artifice, a expliqué Dominic Fugère, directeur général du Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières. Forts de l'appui de la douzaine d'entreprises qui a décidé d'être des nôtres pour cette grande soirée, nous nous sommes entendus avec nos amis de Royal Pyrotechnie pour innover, faire preuve d'audace, d'où le nom et le thème de notre soirée du 5 août grâce à l'expertise de leur division Fusion Drone Shows. »

Ainsi Maurécon a été la première entreprise à s'approprier une des tranches de 15 000$, Charles Turcotte et Fils a rapidement suivi avec un partenaire qui sera annoncé à une date ultérieure. D'autres entreprises comme GB Démolition, Location LTR et Lionel Deshaies Excavation, Le Centre Dentaire 3R, Doucet + Turcotte Architectes se sont jointes pour prendre des parts en collaboration. 

Si les Concessionnaires Chevrolet du Québec sont un partenaire principal du GP3R depuis plusieurs années à travers le Défi Urbain Chevrolet, les trois concessionnaires de la marque dans notre région - Trois-Rivières Chevrolet, Lessard Chevrolet de Shawinigan t Auger Chevrolet de Nicolet ont décidé de contribuer spécifiquement à cet événement qui vise à remercier les gens de notre région. 

Le Salon de Jeux de Trois-Rivières et Loto-Québec ont complété le montage financier en plus d'inciter le GP3R à innover en se dirigeant vers les drones plutôt que les bombes pyrotechniques.  Même six conseillers municipaux de Trois-Rivières - Jonathan Bradley, Maryse Bellemare, Alain Lafontaine, Daniel Cournoyer, Luc Tremblay et René Martin ont décidé de contribuer à cette soirée en attribuant une portion de leur budget discrétionnaire de publicité à cet événement qui célèbre l'audace des gens d'ici. 

« Honnêtement, pour l'instant, comme nous sommes en pleine innovation, on ne sait pas si ce sera mieux, pire ou égal à un spectacle pyromusical classique, a ajouté M. Fugère. Chose certaine, grâce à l'audace des gens qui nous appuient et de Rpyal Pyrotechnie et Fusion Drone Shows qui nous ont promis la plus imposante envolée publique de drones au Canada, on sait qu'on le saura au lendemain de cette soirée du 5 août!»

Si les drones remplaceront les bombes, l'atmosphère festive de la soirée, elle, misera sur des valeurs sûres et un rythme éprouvé. Ainsi, un DJ choisi sur le volet par le Festival Sunsation débutera l'animation musicale au Parc Portuaire dès 18h jusqu'à 20h30 alors que le groupe The Raccoons, qui accueilleront pour l'occasion Jonas Tomalty comme chanteur invité, prendra le relais. Peu après le coup de 22h, question de laisser le Cirque du Soleil terminer son spectacle Guy! Guy! Guy! à l'Amphithéâtre Cogeco,les 400 drones de Fusion illumineront le ciel. Les Night Bluemers, courtoisie de Trois-Rivières en Blues, clôtureront la soirée alors que les gens présents reprendront leur souffle après cette grande soirée innovante.

La soirée du 5 août ne sera pas la seule où le GP3R animera le centre-ville. Fidèles à la tradition, les pilotes investiront le Parc portuaire avec leurs bolides de courses en début de soirée, le jeudi 3 août, pour y rencontrer les amateurs, prendre des autoportraits et signer des autographes. 

En plus d'annoncer l'innovation et l'audace pour ses activités hors-piste, le GP3R a profité de la présence des médias pour annoncer que la série ModLite, habituellement présente sur les circuits de terre battue du Québec se joindra aux séances en piste des Légendes Modifiées et ainsi faire comme les voitures du Défi Urbain Chevrolet en passant de la terre battue à 'asphalte des rues.
