Delaware Classic Weekend Aug 7 recap and results
Loaned Cars, Light Rain; Night 2 of Delaware Classic Weekend! Winners: Jeremy Reid, Rob Summers, Barry Newman August 7, 2010 (London, Ontario) Even the power generated by the rumbling ISMA Super Modifieds pales in comparison to the supremacy of one old lady: Mother Nature. She threatened to hit us with a rainstorm tonight so we juggled our race schedule to push the ISMA Super Modified 50-lap feature race up in the program. However, she kept her interference to a minimum and we completed the line-up and it was another fantastic night with the fastest vehicles on asphalt. |
London's Mark Sammut got back in the game thanks to a fellow Ontarian; Rod Sauder of Coppins Corners. You'll recall that Sammut's #78 and Sauder's #70 flipped on the back straightaway in a heat race last night. Sauder was able to get his car back in racing shape but Sammut was not. With Sammut in the top five in the points race, #70's owner Gary Morton offered to modify the number 70 to read 78 so Sammut could continue racing on his home turf. Last night's feature winner Mike Ordway Sr. who crashed immediately following the checkered flag, made repairs to the #1 in time for the green flag too Bobby Haynes Jr (44) of Kentucky had the pole and points leader Mike Lichty (84) was making tracks from 8th to 3rd in three short laps when a caution was called. The #3 of Terry Simpson had rolled to a stop on the front straightaway. At lap 5, the 28 of Bobby Dawson took the lead and Lichty, from Innerkip Ontario, was running second. At lap 8 another caution for some contact with no major consequences, unlike in last night's race. Mark Sammut hadn't completed the heat race because of a hard spin on turn two so his start near the back of the field and the unfamiliarity of driving someone else's car were a tough combination. At lap 24, Sammut came into the infield and called it a disappointing weekend. Two laps later a new leader took over – the 35 of Rob Summers. At lap 38 the 44 of Bobby Haynes Jr. slid well off the pace and moments later the 25 of Bobby Bonds spun on turn 2 bringing out the yellow. The restart was delayed by a few minutes because of some light rain. In the final ten laps, Summers stretched his lead by half a straightaway and easily took the checkered flag. Lichty landed in second spot followed by Russ Wood (29). The Delaware Super Stocks 25 lap feature began with Matt Humphrys at the pole. Jason Lidster was hard to spot at first – he had borrowed Rob Anderton's #17 and renumbered it 11. At lap 4, Jake Ott (60) who was running fourth, suffered a second week of bad luck as he lost a tire on turn two and crashed into the cement barrier below the APC sign. On the restart Jeremy Reid (76) took the lead and Steve Smith (84) huddled up close behind. The 77 of Darrell Lake joined the top two and the trio enjoyed a comfortable lead on the rest of the field despite the 28 of Kris Lawrence showing the fastest speed on the DelaNet scoring system. 75-year old rookie Al Bowman (74) spun on the final lap but Sharpie kept it green and Jeremy Reid made the trip to Victory Lane with Smith and Lake holding spots two and three. We ended the night with Powerade Modifieds in a 35-lap invitational feature race that meant plenty of visiting drivers joining the local favourites. Samantha Jansen (90) started at the pole but she was out of the top five by the first caution at lap 4. Darrell Limon (54) had the lead with Justin Demelo (82) second. The caution was due to a spin by the 95 of Robert Warnes. At lap 8, yellow came out again as the 8 of Gary McLean made contact with the 88 of Paul Shipway and hit hard on the inside wall. Shipway was given a black flag. Although the 8 looked rough, McLean went back out and joined the field on the restart. A third leader took over at lap 12, Barry Newman (1) with Jamie Cox on his bumper. As they reached the half-way mark, Newman and Cox had a straightaway lead on the rest of the competitors. Cox made repeated side-by-side moves on Newman's high side but lap traffic held him up on a couple of attempts and he couldn't close the deal. Newman took the win followed by Cox and Darrell Limon. Heat Winners: Delaware Super Stocks; Heat #1 winner Kris Root (69). Heat # 2 winner Jeremy Reid (76). Powerade Modifieds: Heat #1 winner Jamie Cox (03). Heat #2 winner David McCullough (39). ISMA Super Modifeds: Heat #1 winner Bob Dawson (28) . Heat #2 winner,Bobby Haynes Jr (44) . Heat #3 winner Mike Lichty (84). We have two back-to-back nights of racing again next weekend!
