Atkins, Bergeron split Late Model mains; Hanson, Bushey make history For Immediate Release DBS-080213-1 WEST HAVEN, VT – Veteran stock car driver Todd Stone held off young up-and-comer Jessey Mueller to win Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s most important open-wheel Modified event on Friday, August 2, taking the second annual Carrara Masonry & Concrete C.J. Richards Memorial 67. The win highlighted a night full of close finishes, with Brandon Atkins, Chris Bergeron, Lacey Hanson, and Karen Bushey also taking victories at the event honoring the track’s late founder. |
The outcome of the race – which was the second round of the five-race Northern Modified Challenge Series – was in question throughout the entire 67-lap distance until Stone crossed the finish line as the winner. Veteran Leon Gonyo of Chazy, NY started on the front row by virtue of a random draw, and led the opening seven laps. Visiting short track standout “Liquid” Loud Cicconi of Aston, PA, driving Stone’s team car, took command on lap 8 and diced with Gonyo for the next 14 laps before Middlebury, VT racer Stone entered the picture. Stone took the lead from Cicconi at lap 31 and led his teammate in an entertaining duel, but Cicconi’s engine failed, forcing him out of the race at lap 39 while running second. The resulting restart allowed 18 year-old Mueller, of Olmstedville, NY, to draw even with Stone, and the pair raced in lockstep for the final 27 laps. Both were forced to make daring maneuvers through lapped traffic with five laps to go, nearly causing them to crash, but Stone held on to beat Mueller by a car length to win. The victory was his fourth-straight and seventh of the season in the Bond Auto Parts Modified division at Devil’s Bowl. “It means so much to win this race,” Stone said in victory lane. “C.J. Richards is the reason we’re all here at Devil’s Bowl. I cut my racing teeth here a long time ago and I considered C.J. a friend and a mentor as much as a race promoter.” Gonyo finished third after a see-saw battle with Hunter Bates of Middlebury, VT. Vince Quenneville, Jr., of Brandon, VT recovered from a mid-race pit stop to finish in fifth place. Ron Proctor, Travis Bruno, Joe Williams, rookie Jamie LaFountain, and Dave Snow completed the unofficial top ten. Rookie Brandon Atkins and veteran Chris Bergeron split twin 20-lap features in the Late Model division. Atkins, 16, of AuSable Forks, NY, posted his career-first victory in impressive fashion in the opening race, outrunning Robert Bryant, Jr., of Brooklyn, CT and Jim “Boomer” Morris of Barre, VT for the win. Bergeron, of Claremont, NH came from 13th starting position to win a wild second race that featured a multi-car pileup on the frontstretch. Bryant, who earlier made a three-wide pass to move from fourth place into the lead, finished second by a fender. Rookie Josh Masterson of Bristol, VT finished third. Rookie Lacey Hanson of Owrell, VT made history by becoming the first woman to win a main event in a weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series division at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, as she held off a persistent challenge from Chris LaVair of Gabriels, NY to score in the 15-lap Central Vermont Motorcycles Mini Stock feature. Jake Noble of Benson, VT – Hanson’s teammate – finished third to protect his point lead in the division. Karen Bushey of Cambridge, VT matched Hanson’s historic accomplishment when she became the first woman to win in the Daredevil “community” division – a series of track-owned cars driven by race fans drawn at random. Bushey, the mother of drivers Craig and Brad Bushey, beat Josiah Simons of Poultney, VT and Billy Jones of Rutland, VT for the win. Devil’s Bowl Speedway is back in action on Friday, August 9 at 7:00pm with Interstate All Battery Center of Rutland Night presented by the Green Mountain Water Environment Association. Bresette wins 1st, Branham wires Late Models John Zych Jr. blasts to NEMA Midget victory
Airborne recap Sat Aug. 3 SOUTH PLATTSBURGH – Johnmichael Bresette of Keeseville drove to his first career Sportsman Modified win on Culligan Water Technologies Night at Airborne Speedway Saturday. Bresette led every lap in the VFW Post 105 No. 14, but he had Rick Doner – also looking for his first win – hot on his tail after the race’s second and last caution on lap 18. Point leader Nick Heywood got up for 3rd at the wire, besting Lonnie Rivers (4th) and Mike Phinney (5th). |
“In practice, I struggled, but by the feature, it was on a rail,” Bresette said. “I’m dedicating this win to my Uncle Reggie, who was a champion here in the 70’s.” Bucko Branham made the most of a rare start on the pole in the Limited Late Model 25-lap feature. Branham opened up a sizeable lead early in the Bud Light No. 20 and was never seriously threatened. Dylan Payea was the runner-up. Fast-closing Robin Wood, hoping for a caution that never came, finished 3rd after contact with Danny Sullivan as the two cars tried to negotiate lap traffic on the final circuit. Jamy Begor and Shawn Duquette completed the top five. “We tried a few things this week on the car and it worked,” Branham said. John Zych Jr. of Mendon, Mass. won the NEMA Midget 25-lap main event. Zych entered the event as NEMA’s only two-time winner this season and held a slight point advantage over defending champion Randy Cabral, who went flying off the second turn on the opening lap. Zych took the lead from Russ Stoehr on lap 5 and held it the rest of the way. Ian Cumens of Lydell. PA and Seth Carlson waged a terrific duel for 2nd over the final 10 laps with Cumens prevailing. Earlier, Cumens drove to victory in the NEMA Midget Lite feature. Jason McClatchie of Plattsburgh reeled in Tylor Terry and Robert Gordon to earn his 4th Renegade win. McClatchie passed Gordon on lap 14 and swapped the lead twice with Terry before taking command in the Ukie’s Deli/S&L Trucking No. 70. on lap 17. Gordon, point leader Richie Turner, Terry and Jon Boutin finished 2-3-4-5. Kris Clark of Keeseville won the Busch Mini Modified feature. Jayson Criss held off Eric Reyell for 3rd. Le concours annuel d'arrêts aux puits de l'Autodrome Drummond remit au 31 août prochain
Lundi 5 août 2013 – Dave Paryzo – Directeur des communications Pour une deuxième fois cette saison, le promoteur Yan Bussière a été forcé d’annuler sa soirée de course, tout comme le 25 mai dernier. Le 12e concours annuel d’arrêts aux puits pour les équipes Modifiés 358 qui devait avoir lieu est reporté au samedi 31 août. Au cours de cette même soirée, les Sportsmans seront aussi à l’honneur avec la reprise de leur finale de 25 tours du 1er juin dernier, en plus d’une finale de 50 tours avec points en double déjà prévue au calendrier. |
Le prochain rendez-vous de l’Autodrome Drummond aura lieu le 17 août avec la « Soirée des femmes » au profit de la Fondation du Cancer du sein du Québec. Ce sera admission gratuite pour les dames. Pour l’occasion, les Modifiés 358 seront en piste « Topless » pour 75 tours ainsi que, les classes Sportsman et Ligthning Sprint pour des épreuves de 25 tours. ACT 150 sur le triovale de Sanair
Pour diffusion immédiate ALEX LABBE EXCELLE DANS UNE VICTOIRE DE JIMMY HERBERT Profitant de la pôle au départ de cet ACT 150 retardé en raison de la pluie, Jimmy Herbert de Williamstown au Vermont n’a jamais rétrogradé plus loin que la troisième place pour revenir en force vers la mi-course et filer vers un premier succès en sol canadien. Pour Herbert, il s’agissait d’une journée parfaite puisqu’il avait également triomphé lors de sa préliminaire. |
Sans vouloir rien n’enlever à la prestation d’Herbert, c’est sans contredit l’excellente performance du jeune Alex Labbé de St-Albert qui a retenu l’attention des amateurs qui avaient bravé les mauvaises prévisions de la météo pour assister à cette course qui regroupait les meilleurs pilotes de deux championnats de l’ACT. Déjà, lors des deux séances d’essais libres, le pilote Larue Équipement de déneigement avait annoncé ses couleurs en se classant deuxième et troisième. Douzième au départ, ne s’est pas énervé dès le drapeau vert. Il s’est contenté de remonter le peloton et dès le premier tiers de la course, on le retrouvait en sixième place. Un peu avant la mi-course, il a réussi à soutirer la troisième place au vétéran Brian Hoar. Puis, après l’arrêt obligatoire, Alex s’est glissé en deuxième sans toutefois attaquer Herbert. La pression était surtout très forte pour Alex alors que Wayne Helliwell et Joey Polewarczyk étaient à ses trousses. Malgré une relance, ils n’ont pas été en mesure de le prendre en défaut. Helliwell qui avait gagné l’an dernier, a terminé troisième suivi Polewarczyk et Brian Hoar. Jonathan Bouvrette, seizième sur la grille, a pris la sixième position suivi de Ben Lynch, Donald Theetge, Jean-François Déry et Bobby Therrien. Dans cette course arrêtée au 145e passage en raison de la pluie, Martin Goulet a terminé 11e, Étienne Cliche 13e, Dany Trépanier 15e, Patrick Cliche qui avait contraint de visiter son puits, 16e. Tous ces pilotes étaient sur le même tour de piste. Avec un tour de déficit, on retrouve Patrick Hamel en18e, Claude Leclerc 20e avec un retard de deux tout comme Gaétan Gaudreault alors que Christopher Bédard a parcouru 143 tours pour une 22e. Par la suite, on retrouve Patrick Boyer 23e, Jacques Poulin 24e, Patrick Laperle 25e, Steven Boissonneault 26e, et David Michaud 28e. Laperle a abandonné au 124e passage et Michaud après 35 tours à la suite de la perte d’une roue. Préliminaires Au début de l’après-midi, avant un premier orage, on a eu le temps de présenter les préliminaires. Alex Labbé a triomphé dans la première. Patrick Laperle en a fait autant dans la deuxième alors Jimmy Herbert, en route pour une journée parfaite a visité le cercle des vainqueurs dans la troisième. Puis, ors de la consi, la victoire est allée à Patrick Cliche qui a eu le meilleur devant David Michaud et Steven Boissonneault. Jimmy Hebert Claims Second ACT Win at Sanair
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ACT-080313 St-Pie, QC – Williamstown, VT’s Jimmy Hebert claimed his second career American Canadian Tour victory of his career in the Sanair 150 at Sanair Super Speedway on Saturday, August 3. Hebert started from the pole position with a +6 qualifying effort on his way to his heat win. He faded back during the early stages of the event before working his way back to the point just before the halfway mark. He returned to the lead for good on lap 70 and built a large lead before the final rain shower of the day came and cut the race short on lap 145. |
Série ACT competitor Alex Labbe and Wayne Helliwell, Jr. came from 12th and 24th respectively to complete the podium. Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. worked his way from 13th to take 4th. Eight-time ACT Champion Brian Hoar and Glen Luce battled for the lead for the majority of the first half of the event. Hoar began to fade before the lap 77 mandatory caution for fuel and tires. He then worked his way back up to finish fifth. Jonathan Bouvrette, Ben Lynch, Donald Theetge, Jean-François Déry and rookie Bobby Therrien rounded out the top ten. The event took one hour and fifty-three minutes including the 15 minute caution for a mandatory tire and fuel stop. The race began after several rain delays and was completed with 145 laps completed as rain once again moved in. The event was slowed by seven cautions including the mandatory caution. The Série ACT returns to Autodrome St-Eustache next Saturday, August 10 for a 200 lap event.
