2015-02-16 - Hier avait lieu la première soirée de compétition pour les voitures LMS American-Canadian Tour à New Smyrna Speedway.  Un 100 tours disputés sans aucune neutralisation, l'épreuve a été remportée par le Outlaw Eddie MacDonald qui était parti en tête de peloton.  Mais c'est Patrick Laperle qui a donné le spectacle, parti de la 14e position, il a terminé deuxième et meilleur des Québécois en piste.  C'est Wayne Helliwell qui a terminé troisième.

 

« J'espérais une neutralisation.  Eddie avait réussi à s'accumuler un bon coussin, moi j'ai hypothéqué mes pneus à me rendre à l'avant.  Ça aurait été la seule chance de le challenger » nous a partagé Laperle après l'épreuve.

 

Journée difficile pour les autres québécois.

 

Alex Labbé termine 6e après avoir pris le départ de l'extérieur de la première ligne.  « La voiture n'allait pas bien.  Je voulais conserver les pneus pour les derniers 30-40 tours.  Mais je n'ai même pas pu faire cela.  La voiture s'est dégradée beaucoup trop vite » nous a partagé le Champion canadien de l'ACT.

 

Daniel Decoste et Donald Theetge ont terminé respectivement 20 et 21.  Une performance décevante pour les deux que nous sommes habituées de voir terminer dans les premiers.  « On s'était amélioré toute la journée.  Dans les épreuves de qualification, je croyais avoir la machine pour me battre avec les meneurs dans la finale malgré une 15e position de départ.  Mais la voiture était très difficile à conduire.  J'étais sur la glace.  Il en reste deux pour se reprendre » déclara Donald  Theetge.

 

Brandon White a été victime d'une série de bris mécanique.  D'abord une transmission en qualification, et problèmes électriques en finale.

 

Jean-Pierre Ouimet a été contraint à l'abandon après seulement 1 tour en piste des suites d'un problème d'alimentation d'essence.

 

Les pilotes reprennent la piste ce soir à 17hpour les courses de qualification.

Eddie MacDonald Goes Flag-to-Flag in Caution Free ACT Event

New Smyrna Beach, FL – "Outlaw" Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, MA led flag-to-flag in the caution free American Canadian Tour 100 at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, FL on Sunday, February 15. MacDonald earned the pole position after racing from 9th to 2nd in his heat race to give him a +7 in ACT's unique plus/minus handicap system.

MacDonald led the 26 car field to the green and held off defending Série ACT Champion Alex Labbe through the early stages of the event. He set a blistering pace, but couldn't shake Labbe, Travis Stearns and Wayne Helliwell, Jr. during the first half of the race. 

Another Quebecer in Patrick Laperle challenged MacDonald through the second half of the race. Laperle marched from his 14th starting postion to take over the second spot just past the halfway mark. He made it to MacDonald's back bumper, but couldn't make a move for the lead. He chased MacDonald through heavy lapped traffic and appeared to be in position to make a challenge on several occasions, but couldn't get it done.

MacDonald and Laperle took the checkered flag in the top two spots, while Helliwell made a last lap pass to claim third. Stearns ran up front throughout the event and claimed fourth, while defending ACT Champion Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. worked his way from the 16th starting position to complete the top five. Labbe fell back to sixth followed by Aaron Fellows, Ray Parent, Luke Hinkley and Brad Babb rounding out the top ten.

The 100 lap event was completed caution free in 33 minutes and 42 seconds. A total of 23 of the 26 starters were on the track for the checkered flag. Only the top ten remained on the lead lap.

All 26 cars survived the first of three nights of American Canadian Tour racing at New Smyrna Speedway. Emily Packard will join the field tomorrow to bring the count up to 27. The first of two American Racer Challenge Cup 100 lap events will be run on Monday, February 16. Heat races will roll out at 7:30pm. The second and final American Racer Challenge Cup 100 will be run on Tuesday, February 17. Drivers will combine their two finishes in the American Racer Challenge Cup events on Monday and Tuesday to decide the overall Challenge Cup winner.

2015-02-14 - À moins de 24 heures le pilote de stock-car de Boischatel, Donald Theetge est febrile à l'idée de fouler à nouveau la piste de New Smyrna Speedway (New Smyrna, Floride) à une trentaine de minutes de Daytona.

 

Avec sa Mercedes-Benz St-Nicolas, numéro 80,  Theetge prendra le départ dans trois courses de 100-tours.  La première, dimanche le 15 février, en marge des deux autres qui elles compteront pour la Coupe American Racer (16 et 17 février) dan

s le cadre des 49e World Series of Asphalt Stock Car competition.

 

« On revient à New Smyrna, un piste très rapide en raison de ses inclinaisons prononcées, avec l'objectif de bien performer et de s'amuser » déclara Donald.  « J'ai terminé 10e au cumulatif en 2011 et terminé respectivement 12e et 10e dans chacune des deux épreuves.  J'ai la ferme intention de faire mieux ».

 

On compte 29 inscrit pour cette compétition qui marque le retour de ce genre de bolide après 4 années d'absence à la piste de New Smyrna, considérée le Mec du stock-car de courte piste.  Dimanche, quand Donald, le groupe d'Américain et de quelques québécois (Labbé, Laperle, Ouimet), il le fera en présence ce soir là de la série NASCAR K&N qui prendront à leur tour à d'assaut le tracé de 0.5-mile.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL – Devil's Bowl Speedway may be buried under three feet of snow in chilly Vermont, but that won't stop three of its regular stock car competitors from firing their engines.  Todd Stone, Emily Packard, and Brandon Atkins are ready to compete in the 49th annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway during Florida Speedweeks,February 13-21, with both the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and the American-Canadian Tour.

Stone, of Middlebury, VT, swept NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (NWAAS) championships last year in the open-wheel Florida Modified division at the World Series at New Smyrna and in the Bond Auto Parts Modifieds at Devil's Bowl, but moves to full-fender cars in 2015.  His World Series ride is a G. Stone Motors-sponsored Ford Fusion for the Pro Late Model class, which has pre-registered entries from 11 states and three Canadian provinces, coast-to-coast.  Stone said that practice sessions helped him learn his car's setup, and he posted top-10 lap times in final practice on Thursday.

"The Pro Late Model cars have bump-stop suspension, which is a lot different than the ACT Late Models my team raced years ago," Stone said.  "There's a learning curve, but I think we're going to be pretty good.  It's funny – there's a lot of young talent here with more experience in these cars, and I'm the grey haired guy just starting out.  We just want to have some fun and get away from the snow back home."

Stone will race his Pro Late Model seven times in nine nights at New Smyrna, beginning his hunt for NWAAS Division II national championship points.  When he returns north he will run the Central Vermont Motorcycles Late Model division at Devil's Bowl and is contemplating a part-time schedule in the Late Models at Airborne Park Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY – both of which also accumulate NWAAS Division II points.

Teenagers Emily Packard of East Montpelier, VT, and Brandon Atkins of Au Sable Forks, NY, will be among the 29 American-Canadian Tour (ACT) entries at New Smyrna for 100-lap events on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights.  Packard finished third in 2014 Devil's Bowl Late Model standings with three wins, and fourth in ACT points, while Atkins is a former Devil's Bowl winner and was the 2014 ACT Rookie of the Year.  The ACT Late Model Tour visits Devil's Bowl Speedway for the People's United Bank 100 onSaturday, June 6.

NAPLES, ME (February 13) – Pro All Stars Series (PASS) President Tom Mayberry and officials from New Hampshire Motor Speedway, along with Bob Guptill of the New England Mini Stock Tour (NEMST), announced today the addition of a historic Super Late Model event at the famed New England oval.  PASS Super Late Models will tackle the 1-mile superspeedway for the first time ever on July 4-5.  New Hampshire Motor Speedway will supplant North Carolina's .625 mile North Wilkesboro Speedway as the largest speedway the PASS Super Late Models have ever competed on.  The PASS event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway becomes the fifth race announced of the 2015 PASS National Championship Series joining the Peach Blossom Special at Anderson (SC) Motor Speedway, the Easter Bunny 150 at Hickory (NC) Motor Speedway, a 200 lapper at Plattsburgh, NY's Airborne Park Speedway, and the 42nd Annual Oxford 250 at Oxford Plains (ME) Speedway.

"We could not be more thrilled than to announce this historic partnership with the folks at New Hampshire Motor Speedway," said PASS President Tom Mayberry.  "This event really came together in a short period of time, but we wanted to make sure our fans and competitors knew as soon as possible.  We will have much more information about the race coming out within the next couple of weeks"

            The race will likely be 50-75 laps long, with a final determination slated to come following a scheduled Hoosier Tire test for PASS at the speedway in May.  In addition to being part of the PASS National Championship Series, the New Hampshire event will also be a PASS North Super Late Model points race as well.  However, PASS North teams will now have the option to drop their lowest finish during the 2015 season.

            Joining the PASS Super Late Models at New Hampshire Motor Speedway July 4 – 5 will be the NEMST Mini Stocks racing for 30 laps and a Super Sportsman race featuring "open" rules slated for 35 laps.  All divisions will be allowed to practice on Saturday, July 4, with an additional practice session scheduled for Sunday, July 5.  Racing action will get under way at 2 PM Sunday, July 5 with the PASS Super Late Models going green at approximately 4 PM.

Kasey Kahne Racing’s Pittman Wins Thriller at DIRTcar Nationals

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 12, 2015 — Kasey Kahne Racing's Daryn Pittman edged Tony Stewart Racing's Donny Schatz in an epic UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car main event Thursday night at Volusia Speedway Park's DIRTcar Nationals.

 

David Stremme followed by dominating the DIRTcar UMP Modified nightcap, holding off Austin Dillon, Nick Hoffman, Ty Dillon and hard charger Kyle Strickler.

 

Pittman was out front of the sprint car feature before a couple of cautions with less than five laps to go gave Schatz, the six-time defending World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion, a shot at running him down. Pittman went to the top, Schatz tried the bottom. They came off of turn four side-by-side the final three laps of the race. Pittman had just enough momentum on the high side of the half-mile dirt oval to slip in front at the checkered flag for KKR's first victory of the year.

 

"If the fans didn't enjoy that, you might as well not even bother come back," said Pittman, who won the 2013 World of Outlaws Sprint Car championship. "I've got to thank my guys. [Crew chief] Kale [Kahne], I didn't believe him. He kept telling me to run the top down there, and I'm sitting there second-guessing, going I don't know if that's a good move or not. We just stuck with it and glad that we stuck with our line and won it that way. Hats off to Donny, he's one of the cleanest there is. He could have definitely used me up on the backstretch there. He raced me clean and I try to feel like we do the same thing back. It's hard when you're battling for wins to not feel like you used up every bit of the racetrack to get there. Big win to get the year started off right. Hopefully we can come back in the next three nights and get another one."

 

Stremme, who also competes in NASCAR, started on the outside of the front row for the UMP Modified feature and charged to the front and stayed there, winning for the first time at Volusia Speedway Park. Austin Dillon, Hoffman and Ty Dillon ran a similar line trying to run down Stremme but to no avail. Strickler, who won on Wednesday night at Volusia, came from 19th to round out the top five in what might have been the most impressive run in the UMP Modified event.

 

"First and foremost we had a really great starting spot," Stremme said. "It was really hard to pass and I was screwing up there. I haven't raced without the spoilers. It's a little different. We had to tune our car a little bit different but it was fun. It was slick, that's how I like it. I knew Austin and those guys were there, they are tough. I've watched them year after down here. Same with Nick and Kyle and Kenny Wallace and Schrader and all them guys. It's really Kenny Wallace's fault that I got into this dirt racing but I love it … I think I got barely 50 dirt races under my belt in four years so it's really hard to come down here and win this. It's pretty big."

 

Nightly doubleheaders at Volusia run Friday through Saturday, Feb. 21. On Friday night the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series makes its season debut along with the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds.

King Autosport engage 2 voitures à Daytona 

 

Le pilote et chef d'équipe de King Autosport, le Beauceron de souche Mario Gosselin, remplacera Martin Roy, premier pilote de l'équipe mais blessé à une épaule, au volant de la Chevrolet no. 90 de l'équipe québécoise lors de l'ouverture de la saison NASCAR XFinity à Daytona Beach le 21 févrierprochain. Cette participation marquera le lancement de la première saison complète entreprise dans une série NASCAR de haut niveau par une équipe québécoise.

Montréal, le 12 février 2015 – Établi en Floride depuis plusieurs années et partenaire de Martin Roy chez King Autosport, Gosselin partage son temps entre la construction et la préparation de stock car pour les diverses séries NASCAR, ARCA et autres, en plus de piloter dans diverses séries, se bâtissant ainsi une solide réputation dans le milieu des courses aux plus hauts niveaux. Le vétéran pilote est plus qu'heureux de revenir en piste : « Je suis d'abord et avant tout un pilote, et encore trop jeune pour accrocher mon casque. Revenir à Daytona, une piste que je connais bien, sur une voiture que j'ai préparée, me donne l'occasion de vraiment bien faire devant un gros public – une chance à ne pas manquer ! »

King Autosport a inscrit la no. 90 dans les 33 courses au calendrier XFinity 2015, une première pour une équipe québécoise. Mario Gosselin, partenaire de Martin Roy dans cette folle entreprise, préparera les voitures dans les ateliers situés près d'Orlando, Floride. Une seconde voiture sera aussi en piste lors de certaines courses clés, comme à Daytona par exemple, alors que le vétéran de la série Sprint Dexter Bean est prévu au volant de la no. 92. On attend naturellement le retour en piste de Martin vers la mi-saison. Il pilotera alors sa no. 90 habituelle alors que d'autres pilotes avec les budgets nécessaires se partageront les volants au fil de la saison. Selon le pilote de Napierville, le défi est de taille. « Nous comprenons l'ampleur du projet et l'importance des budgets requis. Mario et moi somme des hommes de passion mais aussi d'affaire, et avons mis en branle un plan qui nous permettra de réussir et faire notre place en NASCAR. »

L'équipe King Autosport sera aussi en piste pour toutes les épreuves de la série Canadian Tire, alors que le même Mario Gosselin agira comme préparateur et chef d'équipe de la Chevrolet WeatherTech no. 47, championne en 2014 aux mains de Louis-Philippe Dumoulin.

L'équipe pourrait ajouter une seconde voiture en Canadian Tire, selon la disponibilité de budgets de la part d'un pilote chevronné. Au fil des années, King Autosport a aussi préparé des voitures de premier plan dans la même série pour Martin Roy (recrue de l'année en 2012 et quatrième au final en 2013), et le jeune et rapide Alex Guénette. 

Pour sa part, Gosselin sait prendre les bouchées doubles : « Martin et moi avons planifié notre saison avec un réaliste frugal mais surtout efficace. Je suis prêt à travailler très fort pour que tout se réalise. Ma motivation est au maximum, surtout avec un retour au pilotage comme bonus. »

Les deux voitures King seront en piste à Daytona vendredi le 20 février pour des essais, puis le 21 pour la qualification et la course XFinity lancée à 15h30 et diffusée en direct sur RDS2.

Le jeune pilote de St-Albert prendra part à six courses en soirée du 15 au 21 février à bord de ses voitures gagnantes de 2014 : trois soirées avec sa voiture championne en ACT et trois autres avec sa voiture gagnante en série PASS au Québec.

Montréal, le 12 février 2015 -  Fort d'une saison 2014 gagnante, Alex Labbé et ses équipiers se retrouveront dans la région immédiate de Daytona Beach pour une série de courses courue tout au long de la « Speedweek  at Daytona » couronnée par le Daytona 500 couru le dimanche 22 février. Le New Smyrna Speedway, un ovale pavé d'un demi-mille, se trouve à une trentaine de minutes au sud de Daytona, et on y retrouve plusieurs amateurs et membres d'équipes venus voir des courses serrées sur un petit ovale, la souche tant populaire du Stock Car.

L'équipe Larue Motorsports, avec laquelle Labbé a remporté le titre ACT Québec 2014, sera en piste lundi, mardi et mercredi. Alex passera ensuite à une voiture de l'équipe VRVictoriaville.com, avec laquelle in a remportédeux victoire et terminé second derrière Kyle Bush en série PASS, lors du passage de ce dernier au Circuit Vallée-Jonction.

Labbé en sera à sa quatrième visite à New Smyrna et connait bien la piste. Tellement qu'il vise la victoire à chaque sortie : « Nous connaissons bien nos voitures, toutes les deux gagnantes en 2014, et je connais la piste à fond. J'ai donc tout ce qu'il me faut pour gagner ! » De plus, la présence de membres des équipes NASCAR en spectateurs intéressés ajoute à l'importance de chaque sortie en piste. « Ces gens peuvent aider la carrière d'un jeune comme moi, ce qui me motive encore plus. J'ai un travail à accomplir, autant en réglant la voiture lors des essais qu'en qualification et en course. Je ne vise rien d'autre que la perfection et je sais que l'équipe fera de même. »

La saison locale d'Alex débutera à Lee (NH) en série ACT américaine les 11 et 12 avril. Alex participera ensuite à toutes les courses ACT Québec, et à d'autres séries lorsque son emploi du temps le permettra. L'entourage d'Alex espère trouver des budgets pour permettre à Alex de courir en Série NASCAR Canadian Tire. De quoi se retrouver en piste pratiquement tous les weekends de mai à octobre.

Waterbury, VT – The bitter cold and snow during the winter of 2014-15 will be just a memory for the twenty-nine (29) ACT teams beginning this week as they caravan down the East Coast to the New Smyrna Speedway (NSS) at New Smyrna Beach in Florida.

The "World Series of Asphalt Short Track Racing" at New Smyrna Speedway, as it has been billed for decades, has served as a mid-winter break for many northern US and Canadian teams over the years. Just about every division of racing has competed at NSS over the week between the opening of activities at the Daytona International Speedway and the conclusion at week's end, the Daytona 500.

"I remember being in a banquet hall, I believe at the Whitehall Hotel on the beach, when Richie Evans won one of his many NASCAR titles. During those years (1979) all divisions of NASCAR, from what is now Cup to the Modified Division, were at one banquet in February in Daytona. As soon as Evans received his Championship trophy and ring, he was out of the room heading for New Smyrna! Over the years, the best have all raced the World Series at New Smyrna. From the great Jr. Hanley from Ontario, to the best of the Modified and Late Model racers around both the US and Canada, they have all raced at NSS. If you were a top asphalt team, you probably tried New Smyrna Speedway during your career. I am really happy ACT teams and their fans can have this experience," said Tom Curley, President of the American Canadian Tour.

The early favorites to win the American Racer Challenge Cup include defending Champions from ACT US and ACT Quebec, twenty-five year old Joey Polewarczyk, Jr., Hudson, NH and twenty-one year old Alex Labbe, Ste. Albert, QC. They will be challenged by US veterans Wayne Helliwell, Jr., Dover, NH; Eddie MacDonald, Rowley, MA; Ray Parent, Tiverton, RI; and former ACT Quebec Champions Donald Theetge, Quebec City, and Patrick Laperle, St-Denis, QC.

"Forget about any favorites in this race. I think the level of talent heading to New Smyrna is as deep and tough as any race I have been in over the past decade. When you include Jimmy Hebert, Emily Packard, Brad Babb, Luke Hinkley, and Aaron Fellows-- really the list goes on and on. Then there are guys like Keith Rocco and Tom Carey that are joining us. Eric Chase has won a race there. Travis (Stearns) and Rowland Robinson are ACT regulars. The neutral track at NSS is going to make this one of the best three days of racing I can think of. We are packed and ready and anxious to see everybody in Florida," said ACT Champion Polewarczyk, Jr.

The ACT teams from eight states and the Province of Quebec will compete in a three-day race program beginning Sundaynight, February 15, with a 100-lap event in conjunction with the opening of the 2015 season for the NASCAR K&N Series. They will present a 150-lap race. Monday and Tuesday, February 16 and 17 ACT will present a two-night American Racer Challenge Cup series. ACT teams will race individual 100-lap races and a combined overall American Racer Challenge winner will then be crowned on Tuesday.

Avec l'arrivée du mois de février, les planifications des différentes séries et pistes de course vont bon train. Plusieurs calendriers provisoires sont ébauchés en vue de la prochaine saison de stock car qui arrive à grands pas, malgré ce froid qui persiste et ne veut pas s'en aller. Mais, comme à toutes les années, le mois de mai et les vrombissements des moteurs finiront bien par arriver au grand plaisir des amateurs de courses de stock car québécois.


Parmi les organisations qui sont en préparation, il y a la populaire série de l'Association de Stock Car Vintage Québec dont les préparatifs vont bon train. 


Déjà, en ce début de février, Patrick Verner, le président de la série (photo), est très heureux des réponses positives des promoteurs des pistes du Québec. ''Parmi les pistes qui ont été contactées, nous avons déjà une demi-douzaine de courses de confirmées, une nette avance sur nos courses cédulées à pareille date, l'an dernier, et il me reste encore deux pistes à rejoindre, les promoteurs étant en vacances.....'' de préciser V erner lorsque rencontré avec sa collaboratrice, Josée Ratté, au cours des derniers jours. On sait que l'ASCVQ ont complété un calendrier de 7 courses en 2014 et que pour 2015 on prévoit en faire le même nombre, peut-être au maximum une de plus.


Au tout début de son existence, il y aura 8 ans cette année, l'ASCVQ était composée d'un groupe d'amis qui s'amusaient à parcourir les pistes du Québec avec les voitures des années 1972 et antérieures, préparées à la façon des pilotes des années 50 à 1970. Il y a même des répliques de voitures vedettes de cette époque qui sont même pilotées par leurs pilotes originaux, dont les vétérans Langis Caron et Lucien Rocheleau.



Au fil des ans, de nouvelles équipes, composées d'amants de ces vieilles voitures, autant pour les modèles, que pour le son qu'elles dégagent, se sont ajoutées ou en ont remplacé d'autres, tant et si bien qu'aujourd'hui plus d'une trentaine de ces voitures sont existantes.


C'est donc avec fébrilité que toute l'équipe de l'Association de Stock Car Vintage Québec et leurs équipes de course se préparent pour la nouvelle saison qui se mettra en branle à la mi-mai. Le calendrier de cette saison estivale 2015 sera rendu public au cours des prochaines semaines.

DirtCar appoints Mike Perrotte

DirtCar appoints Mike Perrotte

 

Dirtrackdigest.com reports that DirtCar appointed Mike Perrotte to lead its Northeast division, the sanction and the Big Block and 358 Series.


Until recently Perrotte had turned Airborne Park Speedway around, with impressive improvements, also taking the risk with the running dirt modifieds on asphalt on a regular basis.  With great success and it was well appreciated by the fans.


He was also seen, on a sporadic, basis behind the wheel of a race car on both dirt and pavement.  A very skilled driver.


Closer to home, he worked with Alan Labrosse and the Autodrome St-Eustache track to have the modifieds run on the 4/10-mile asphalt oval in the lower Laurentians, just North of Montreal in 2014; earlier this week, the Labrosse clan announced that they wanted to fill the void created by Devil's Bowl Speedway and Airborne by racing the powerful 358 in a 10-race Championship.

 

I think, when Dirt picked Perrotte, they chose someone highly qualified for the job and a very nice guy.

Dirttrackdigest.com rapporte que DirtCar aurait appointé Mike Perrotte pour dirigé sa filiale du Nord-est, entre autres, la sanction et les séries de gros block et de 358.

Perrotte jusqu'à récemment avait relancé Airborne Park Speedway, avec des améliorations importantes, pris le risque de faire tourner les modifiés de terre sur l'asphalte sur une base régulière. Le tout avec grands succès et au plaisir des amateurs.

Ont là aussi vu, de façon sporadique, derrière le volant, tant sur la terre que sur l'asphalte. Un pilote de grand calibre.

Plus près de chez nous, il a travaillé avec @alan labrosse et l'Autodrome St-Eustache pour lancer les modifiés sur le 4/10-mile dans les basses Laurentides en 2014; sur cette lancé ont apprenait plus tôt cette semaine que la famille Labrosse allait profiter du retrait de la programmation de ces puissants bolides, aux pistes de Devil's Bowl Speedway et Airborne Speedway, pour aligner un 
Championnat de 10 courses.

Je crois que Dirt vient d'arrêter sur un type hautement qualifié et qui est en plus un gars bien sympathique.

Track championship, NASCAR rookie title among hometown racer's goals

PLATTSBURGH, NY – Bucko Branham, one of the North Country's all-time winningest stock car drivers, is returning to top-tier competition at Airborne Park Speedway in 2015.  The Plattsburgh, NY favorite and 2014 Late Model track champion is moving up for a full season in the J&S Steel Modified division of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (NWAAS) and joins a growing list of racers headed to the premier class.

Among Branham's 57 career victories at Airborne are six wins in open-wheel Modifieds.  He'll return to the class this year hoping to make a run at not only the track championship but also NWAAS Rookie of the Year honors.  As a first-time NWAAS Division I license holder, Branham will be considered a rookie in the NASCAR program and hopes to follow the lead of reigning track champion Nick Heywood, who took both the National and New York State Rookie of the Year crowns in 2014.

Branham has acquired proven equipment for his Modified return, and will campaign a chassis driven to multiple victories by Jessey Mueller.  Branham pulled double-duty in 2014, driving his own car in the Late Model division while serving as Mueller's crew chief, and has an intimate knowledge of the chassis.

"I really liked the Modifieds when I ran them a few years ago, and I'm ready to get back into one.  The whole team is excited for the season to start, and I know we'll have a good car," Branham said.  "I'm not getting any younger, and I figured it was time to do something different this year."

Branham reports that he had his Modified plans already in the works, but when news broke recently about long-time Airborne rival Jamy Begor joining the Modified division, it motivated him.

"Jamy and I are friends off the track, but we always seem to create a little extra excitement when we race together," Branham said with a smile.  "It'll be good to rub door bars with him again, like old times."

A veteran team returns to back Branham, including Scott Bouyea, Howie Drake, Rick Frenyea, and Bill Clukey.  Branham's wife, Tammy, is a familiar fixture at Airborne, as are daughter Billie Jo and son Buddy.  Sponsorship from Liquor & Wine Warehouse and Plattsburgh Paving will support the effort, and Branham says he is proud to extend a marketing relationship of more than 20 years with Bud Light during his racing career.  If additional sponsorship can be found, Branham will also chase the track championship at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Vermont and go after NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Championship points.

Fans To Join Crew Chiefs In Setting Starting Grid

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 5, 2015) – NASCAR announced today that the season-opening 75-lap Sprint Unlimited at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, Feb. 14, will be split into two segments. A competition caution at lap 25 will separate the segments in the non-points event, scheduled for an 8:15 p.m. ET start (live on FOX, Motor Racing Network Radio, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). 

 

New this year, select fans will be paired with each crew chief for a random drawing to determine starting and pit road positions.  The drawings will take place on Friday, Feb. 13 at the FDOT Main Stage inside the Sprint FANZONE beginning at 3:30 p.m.

 

"Anticipation for the start of the NASCAR season is at an all-time high among fans and drivers," said NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer Steve O'Donnell. "Fans have a unique opportunity to participate in key elements of the event, making this year's Sprint Unlimited even more exciting."

 

The field of 25 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers will include 2014 Coors Light Pole Award winners, former Sprint Unlimited race winners and Daytona 500 pole winners who competed full time in 2014, and all 16 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers from 2014. If an eligible driver does not enter the race, the open position will be filled based on 2014 Championship driver points. The first five provisional drivers, respectively, are Clint Bowyer, Paul Menard, Marcos Ambrose, Casey Mears, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
