'Magic Mile' is a Key Thread Weaving Through Series History

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 12, 2016) – With 69 races having been held there since the track opened in 1990, no venue is more synonymous with the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East than New Hampshire Motor Speedway. And when the 70th race is completed at the track on Saturday afternoon, the winner of the United Site Services 70 will put their name amongst elite company in the record books.

 

The hub of speedway racing in New England, the 1.058-mile oval seating nearly 100,000 people is the largest sporting venue in the region and it has celebrated some of stock car racing's biggest names in its Victory Lane. Maine native Ricky Craven, Martin Truex Jr., Daytona 500 winner Joey Logano, Jeff Burton, and multi-time series champions Jamie Aube, Brad Leighton, Mike Olsen and Andy Santerre have all won races at the track. NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kyle Larson won the 2012 event -- one of five drivers since 2007 to win at NHMS and take home the title in the same year -- along with last year's winner and current NASCAR Camping World Series championship points leader William Byron.

 

In fact, so significant is the list of K&N Pro Series East winners at NHMS that nine of the 10 drivers named to the series' Top 10 Drivers of the First 25 Years of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series in 2011 all won races there.

 

While the series held its first races in 1987, NHMS opened just three years later and became a staple, hosting as many as four races a year through the end of the 1999 season. Events at The Magic Mile remain significant to this day with the annual series' stop at the track coming as a companion event to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race each summer.

FAST FACTS:
The Race: The United Site Services 70 will be the ninth of 14 races on the 2016 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East schedule. It's the eighth of 10 oval track events and will the series' 70th visit to New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

 

The Procedure: The starting field is 36 cars, including provisionals. The first 32 cars will qualify through the group qualifying process while the remaining four spots will be awarded through the provisional process. The race will be 70 laps, spanning 74.06 miles.

 

The Track: This is the 70th race for the K&N Pro Series East at the 1.058-mile slightly banked oval, dating back to September 1990. This is the third straight year the series has raced on the summer stop for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, after running on the September weekend in 2012 and 2013. It's the largest oval on the K&N Pro Series East schedule.

 

Race Winners: There have been 29 different winners in the 59 all-time stand-alone races at Loudon. New Hampshire native Brad Leighton has the most series wins at the "Magic Mile" with eight, while Eddie MacDonald is the active leader with three.

 

Pole Winners: Of the 32 different drivers to earn a pole award at New Hampshire, Kelly Moore has the most in K&N Pro Series East history with six. Ben Rhodes set a new qualifying record in 2014 with a time of 29.622 seconds (128.580 mph) for his first pole at Loudon.

 

United Site Services 70 Notes: 
Leader Of The Pack: Justin Haley of Winamac, Indiana, padded his lead atop the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East standings with a win in the series' most recent race at Ohio's Columbus Motor Speedway on July 2. Haley, who also won at Greenville Pickens Speedway in South Carolina this season, leads Noah Gragson by 40 points atop the standings with six races remaining.

 

LaJoie Returns: Corey LaJoie of Concord, North Carolina, who has made four NASCAR Xfinity Series starts this season, returns to his roots with a start in the United Services 70 on Saturday. LaJoie won five of 14 races in the K&N Pro Series in 2012, en route to a second-place finish in the season standings behind current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Larson. He posted his best career NHMS finish of second that season.

 

Gilliland Returns East: Third generation driver Todd Gilliland will be in the NHMS field. The 16-year-old from Sherrills Ford, North Carolina has five wins in 12 K&N Pro Series starts this season, including four West wins and one East win. Gilliland won the season opener at New Smyrna Speedway in February after winning the pole and leading 91 laps en route to the victory.

 

Austin Theriault Right At Home: The Hattori Racing Enterprises driver from Fort Kent, Maine, has as nearly as much experience at NHMS as any driver in the United Site Services 70 field. Theriault has made starts in both the XFINITY Series and K&N Pro Series at the track, as well as a number of Late Model starts. Theriault is coming of a career-best finish of second at Columbus and sits fifth in the overall standings.

 

Eddie Mac On The Attack: Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, Massachusetts, leads all active drivers with three career wins at NHMS, including a season sweep of the two races in 2008. He also has several Late Model and Super Late Model wins at the speedway, and he's entered in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series New Hampshire 301 on Sunday.

 

Feels Like The First Time: Through the first eight races of the season, there have been seven different NASCAR K&N Pro Series East winners — and all of them first-time winners. Noah Gragson of Las Vegas, Nevada, became the seventh driver first-time winner added to the list when he won the Stafford 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway in June. Gragson used a bold three-wide move on a green-white-checkered restart to claim his first career win in his 19th career start.

 

NASCAR Home Tracks: NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Part Of Tripleheader
The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour joins the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East on a tripleheader schedule Saturday at NHMS, along with the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The Whelen Modified Tour will also be part of a special All-Star Shootout on Friday, a 35-lap non-points event.

Ontario Modifieds Series Cranks Up the Summer Heat at Flamboro Speedway

For their first 2 shows this month, the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – is tackling Flamboro Speedway. The Hamilton, Ontario speed plant hosted the popular open wheeled tour Saturday, July 2nd for an action-packed event.

 

Whether in weekly racing or a travelling series, the key to short track events is the competition. OMRS shows give fans plenty to see and cheer about from the drop of the green flag, all the way through to the checkered. Even though the first 3 main events on this year's tour have featured the same driver in victory lane, they've had to work hard for every single position they've earned.

 

With Willow Barberstock and Chris Burrows on the front row, the crowd was looking forward to a solid, exciting main event run as the OMRS speedsters worked their way around the spacious Flamboro Speedway layout. As result of his previous feature victories and series handicapping, John Baker Jr. was forced to start from the tail of the field. As laps clicked-off on the scoreboard, the #63 machine gained positions on the track and eventually recorded his 4thconsecutive win. In the winner's circle interview, it was typical 'JBJ', as Baker sounded both proud and humble when discussing his latest racing accomplishments.

 

"When I first started running these cars, there was a lot to learn," admitted Baker. "Last season, it took about the first half of the year to figure out how to make the car fast and the changes it would need to adjust for the different race conditions. Lately, its almost like being back in the Thunder Car. I'm comfortable and confident behind the wheel and like how it feels to be able to win races in a new series, but I also know that just around the corner there could be someone else in victory lane."

 

As the checkered flag fell, Baker – who also claimed a victory in the qualifying heat race earlier in the day – was followed across the line by Brad Stevenson, Stu Robinson Jr., Christopher Mulders, Rob Warnes, Duane Cinnamon, Barberstock, Randy Hollingsworth, Ryan Dick, Burrows and Rick Warnes.

 

The series runs their second Flamboro Speedway show of the month Saturday, July 16th before returning to Peterborough as part of Mid Summer Bash – presented by Country 105 – Saturday, July 23rd.

Mother Nature may have washed out the latest attempt at Toonie Grandstand Admission/Fan Appreciation Night, but her efforts did nothing to dampen the spirits or the enthusiasm of supporters at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval. Peterborough Speedway is next scheduled to host the return of the APC Pro Late Model Series – along with the home track Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck and Paul Davis Systems Thunder Car divisions – Saturday, 16th.

 

In just its second season of operation, the travelling APC Pro Late Model show has been bringing strong car counts and solid shows to venues across the province. The upcoming date at the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road, west of the Liftlock City will have a significant local presence with Cavan's Dan McHattie – who scored a runner-up finish earlier in the year – as well as Warkworth's Derek Lynch – who is also doing a part-time schedule on the NASCAR Pinty's Series – and Thunder Car graduate Willie Reyns, from Port Hope, Ontario are expected to be in the starting grid and chasing a checkered flag in the 100 lap main event. Track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse – who pulled on his racing gear and made the starting field in his own #24J machine last year – says he understands why fans look forward to seeing this show.

 

"The grid is made-up from some of the best Late Model stock car pilots from a number of different tracks to compete on the same stage," said Josiasse. "These are drivers that our fan base has heard about over the years and to have them compete here at Peterborough Speedway is very exciting. Every driver who rolls through our pit gate will be looking to add a very prestigious event win to their resume."

 

For the Saturday, July 16th return of the APC Pro Late Model Series at Peterborough Speedway, pit gates will open at 2:00, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 4:00and the first on track action at 5:00.

 

Looking ahead on the calendar finds the Country 105 Mid Summer Bash – with Mini Stock, Renegade Truck, Thunder Car, Late Model and Ontario Modifieds Racing Series action – Saturday, July 23rd. The month concludes with the Touring Chase for the Autumn Colours Classic Pole Qualifier – Saturday, July 30th – featuring the OSCAAR Super Late Models, Modifieds, Midgets and Pro Midgets; along with 4Fun and Mini Stocks.

NAPLES, ME (July 6) – After a weekend that saw three drivers punch their tickets to the 43rd Annual HP Hood Oxford 250, a full field of Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North Super Late Models will be back on track this weekend for the Southern Maine Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep 150 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway.

Hermon, ME's Mike Hopkins leads the championship standings by just five points over 2014 PASS North champion, DJ Shaw, who won the most recent series event at Beech Ridge earlier this year.  But, two drivers with a lot of experience at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway could be the favorites on Saturday night.  Hometown hero Garrett Hall is the only driver to win more than one PASS North Super Late Model event in 2016.  And, defending PASS National Champion, Joey Doiron, has gone to victory lane at Beech Ridge with the series in recent years.

After enduring a tough start to the 2016 season, which saw Doiron involved in crashes at Hickory Motor Speedway and Star Speedway, Doiron and the JBJ Machine Shop team decided to step back and concentrate their efforts on events at Beech Ridge and Oxford.  Since then, Doiron has won the last two weekly events at Beech Ridge and enters Saturday night's Southern Maine Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep 150 as the track's hottest driver.

"I think we've made gains as far as the weekly stuff goes," says Doiron.  "I feel like we always have a decent shot every time PASS goes to Beech Ridge, especially with how we've ran the last two weeks."

Another strong field is expected for Saturday night's action at Beech Ridge Motor with all the action getting under way with rotating practice for all competing divisions starting at 3 PM and racing for the Southern Maine Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep 150 beginning at7 PM.

L'action reprend de plus belle ce samedi 9 juillet à l'Autodrome Drummond avec un programme incluant des courses d'importance dans les différents
championnats DIRTcar, ainsi que les Lightning Sprint qui reviennent
s'exprimer à Drummondville.

Ce sera la 2e manche du championnat GMC crate motor, pour la catégorie
Sportsman. Les Sportsman, qui offre un spectacle exceptionnel cette
année seront en piste pour 2x 25 tours de pur plaisir.

Le championnat Sportsman est des plus serrés et surprenants. Lors du
dernier programme, Dany Gagné retrouve le chemin de la victoire mais ce
ne fut pas suffisant pour détrôner Bryan Cloutier qui occupe encore le
premier rang (302 pts) du championnat seulement 5 points devant Gagné
(297 pts). Félix Murray n'est pas très loin derrière avec 36 point d'écart
(266 pts) sur Cloutier. Malheureusement la course fut écourtée à cause
d'un drapeau rouge et l'heure tardive, des mesures seront prises afin que
les Sportsman puissent faire tout leur tours à l'avenir, car ils offrent tout un
spectacle.

En Modifié 358 le championnat est aussi des plus intéressants. La recrue
de Sorel, Mathieu Desjardins ne cesse d'impressionner et d'engranger de
bons résultats. Lors du programme précédant les vainqueurs des deux 40
tours, se retrouvent tous les deux en tête du championnat. Mathieu
Desjardins occupe le premier rang avec 502 points suivis de près par
Marion Clair avec 492 points, seulement 10 petits points les séparent. Le
promoteur n'est pas très loin derrière au 3e rang avec 22 points de retard
devant Gino Clair, "le Shark" à un bolide très performant et sera à
surveiller. Mais Desjardins est actuellement l'homme à battre et la
confiance est à son comble.

Les Lightning Sprint sont de retour à l'Autodrome Drummond. Lors de leur
dernière présence les Lightning ont été comme toujours très spectaculaires
avec une finale chaudement disputé et les positions s'échangeaient jusqu'à
la dernière courbe du dernier tour. Rappelons que Stéphane St-Laurent
avait dominé la majorité de la course. Une relance combative en fin de
course viendra repousser son travail sur la 3e marche du podium cédant la
victoire à Jordan Poirier.

La doyenne des pistes en action au Canada saura vous en mettre plein la
vue. L'Autodrome Drummond "La F1 de la terre battue ».

Les pilotes Mini Sportsman; qui sont-ils ?



C'est ce samedi, 9 juillet qu'aura lieu le 4e programme de la saison Mini Sportsman lors du 4e Round DMCC Drift à l'Autodrome Chaudière Vallée-Jonction.

Nos 8 pilotes actifs devraient être présents pour l'occasion. Malheureusement, le #14 Simon Larouche qui avait connu une excellente course lors du premier programme ne pourra participer au programme suite à une blessure.

Une nouvelle pilote

Lors du dernier programme, nous avons pu voir une nouvelle pilote en piste à bord de la voiture #8 c'est-à-dire Juliette Bélanger. Ayant fait ses premiers essais le matin même du programme, on peut confirmer que la jeune pilote a tout en elle pour bien performer dans la série. Elle s'est rapidement adaptée à la voiture et a su suivre le groupe et s'y intégrer facilement. Commandité principalement par Posimage, Juliette a adoré son expérience et a déjà hâte de revenir en piste.

Contrairement à l'an dernier, il est vraiment intéressant de voir des pilotes différents sur le podium, et ce, à chaque programme. N'ayant fait qu'une seule division pour la saison 2016, on constate davantage d'égalité entre les pilotes.

Chose certaine, certains pilotes n'ont pas la même expérience. C'est le cas du #81 Jérémy Bergeron au volant de sa voiture aux couleurs du Riverside Speedway Ste-Croix et DMCC Drift, en tête du classement actuel qui a été victime d'une crevaison lors du dernier programme. Parions qu'il sera prêt pour son retour en piste ce samedi.

Le #37 William Gariepy commandité par Entreprise D.G. qui en est à sa première saison occupe actuellement la 2e position au classement général lui qui a terminé sur la 2e marche du podium le dernier programme. La compétition ne lui est pas étrangère participant à des courses de motocross et y obtenant d'excellents résultats. Mais rien n'est gagné pour le pilote de Beauport, car 1 seul point le distance de la 3e position.

D'ailleurs, en 3e position, on retrouve 2 pilotes qui sont actuellement à égalité soit le #77 Cédrik Grenier qui a remporté les deux finales lors du dernier programme ainsi que le #71 Nicolas Côté avec sa voiture aux couleurs de Létourno Service de Pneus. Les deux jeunes pilotes poursuivent sans cesse leur progression et surprennent par leurs résultats.

On retrouve par la suite le #7 William Perron commandité par Eau Service qui saura sans aucun doute revenir en force pour le 4e programme suivi par le #67 Thomas Côté commandité par Boulevard Toyota/Scion/Lexus. Ayant connu quelques ennuis lors des deux premiers programmes, Thomas est plus déterminé que jamais pour monter sur la 3e marche du podium samedi dernier.

Finalement, avec 1 programme en moins, on retrouvera en piste la #36 Sabina Bundic dans la voiture V.R. Victoriaville. Avec 1 programme en moins, Sabina voudra sans aucun doute remonter sur les marches du podium ce samedi.

Venez encourager les pilotes de la relève qui feront tout pour vous donner le meilleur d'eux même afin de vous offrir un spectacle à la hauteur de vos attentes.

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Devil's Bowl Speedway management is saddened to confirm the loss of one of its stock car racing family members, driver Ron Casey.

Mr. Casey, 61, of Manchester Center, Vt., was competing in a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sportsman Modified race on the 3/10-mile Dirt Track at Devil's Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vt., on the evening of Sunday, July 3, 2016 when he was stricken with what appeared to be a medical emergency that led to a crash.

With nine of 35 laps complete at approximately 9:15 p.m., Mr. Casey's racecar suddenly veered off course through the infield at a high rate of speed and traveled through the infield grass before making a hard impact with a retaining wall in Turn 2 and coming to rest.  No other people or vehicles were involved in the incident.

Mr. Casey was quickly and carefully tended to by track safety workers and the Fair Haven Rescue medical team who were on site and at the scene within 60 seconds.  He was extricated from the car and transported by ambulance to Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland, Vt., where he was officially pronounced deceased at 12:12 a.m. on Monday, July 4.

Mr. Casey used proper safety equipment including an approved helmet, head-and-neck restraint system, aluminum racing seat, and certified restraining belts, all of which were in good condition and met current safety specifications.  The car was inspected following the crash and was deemed to be mechanically and structurally fit for competition.  Mr. Casey's official cause of death has not yet been determined, though it is believed to have been due to a medical problem just prior to the accident.

Ron Casey was the epitome of the old-school, hard-working Vermonter, and was an impeccable ambassador for grassroots auto racing.  His warm, friendly demeanor was a welcome addition to every track at which he competed during his long career.  Racing on a shoestring budget, his priority was fun over success and his passion, enthusiasm, and dedication for the sport were obvious.  Mr. Casey was the first driver to register to compete when dirt track racing returned to Devil's Bowl Speedway in September 2014, he was the first driver to arrive at the track's official car show in Downtown Rutland on a rainy 35-degree morning in May 2016, and he was the first driver in line to enter the pit area on the night that he passed away – just as he was at virtually every race.

Devil's Bowl Speedway thanks Fair Haven Rescue and the Devil's Bowl Speedway Safety Team for their swift care and professionalism.  Devil's Bowl Speedway also thanks its passionate, dedicated, and caring fan base for its outpouring of support following the incident, and requests that the same continues to be extended to Ron Casey's family members and many friends and supporters.

Race in peace, Ron Casey.  You were a true gentleman and much-loved member of the local auto racing family who will be greatly missed.

Airborne Park Speedway 7-2-16



PLATTSBURGH,NY- The defending champion of the Jeffords Steel Renegade division had been kept out of the win column to this point in 2016. Milton, Vt.'s Richie Turner took the lead on lap-12 and led the rest of the way. Current point leader, Robert Gordon, also of Milton, finished in the second spot. Jason McClatchie, Tylor Terry and Zach Rabtoy completed the top-5. 
The four-time defending Ernie's Discount Tools Sportsman Modified champion picked up his fifth win of the season. Heywood and Bucko Branham battled side by side, Heywood inside and Branham outside for the better part of five laps. The two exchanged the lead three times in the side by side battle. Branham ended up second. Danny Sullivan, Mike Wells and Jamie LaFountain completed the top-5.
Dale O'Neil took advantage of leaders Tyler Irwin and Josh LaPorte getting together. O'Neil claimed his sixth victory of the 2016 campaign. Pete Blaney, Tim LaFountain, Irwin and Cricket Turner completed the top-5.

Post time returns to 6pm next weekend for Mid-Season Championships presented by Fidelis Care.

The 2016 campaign at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval continues to roll, with amazing battles at every turn. Saturday, July 9th Pepsi presents the year's second Fan Appreciation Night, with Toonie Spectator Grandstand admission. Peterborough Speedway's home track Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, Paul Davis Systems Thunder Car and Earl Ireland Auto Sales Late Model divisions will be joined by the INEX Ontario Legends for an incredible show. Track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse says it's a great chance to experience the best in short track stock car racing excitement.

 

"There aren't too many places where you can entertain a family of 5 for $10, but we've managed to put it together," said Josiasse. "Our drivers and race teams get pumped-up for these shows and love the opportunity to meet the fans who show their support week-after-week. Its more than just signing autographs and handing-out treats. They're building base of support that will last for years and that's a great way to create a new generation of fans."

 

For the Fan Appreciation/Toonie Spectator Grandstand Admission Night – Saturday, July 9th – pit gates will open at2:00, with the spectator areas unlocked at 4:00 and the first qualifying heat taking the Great Canadian RV green flag at 5:00.

 

Looking ahead at the schedule finds some of the year's biggest events and touring series ready to tackle the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road, west of the Liftlock City. The return of the APC Pro Late Model Series – with 4Fun, Renegade Truck and Thunder Car divisions – is Saturday, July 16th. Country 105 presents the Mid Summer Bash – featuring the Mini Stocks, Renegade Trucks, Thunder Cars, Late Models and the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – Saturday, July 23rd. The Touring Chase for the Colours show – with the OSCAAR Super Late Models, Modifieds, Midgets, Pro Midgets; as well as Peterborough Speedway 4Fun and Mini Stock classes – is Saturday, July 30th.

-Autodrome Granby. Ce vendredi 8 juillet, en plus de nos classes régulières nous accueillons nos rapides Lightning Sprint pour leur seule visite annuelle. Une quinzaine d'entre eux nous ont déjà fait part de leur présence.

 

Modifié Metalia 50 tours  

François #1* et Steve #25* Bernier sont premiers dans les points devant Kayle Robidoux #46 et Steve Bernard #54. Dominic Dufault #63 est à égalité avec Bernard sur la 4ème place du cumul. Dimanche à Cornwall Mario Clair #22 a terminé 9ème dans la voiture #22D du propriétaire Roy Delorimier.

 

Sportsman Metalia 50 tours  

Martin Hébert #43 continue d'avoir le dessus sur Martin Pelletier #92, mais Dany Gagné #90 est maintenant égal à Pelletier sur la deuxième position du classement. Dany Gagné #90 était du côté de Cornwall dimanche, parti 15ème, il a terminé 6ème dans la course de 25 tours. Félix Murray #95 est encore quatrième au cumul de Granby et Alexandre Salvas #8 est de retour dans le top 5 au détriment de Michael Richard #3M.
 

Prostock 25 tours  

Jocelyn Roy #48 a 5 deuxièmes à son actif à l'Autodrome Granby en 2016, mais pas encore de victoire... Elle ne saurait tarder. Roy est premier au classement à 3 points devant Stéphane Lemire #115 qui connaît une saison de rêve. Bruno Cyr #33 est monté au troisième rang du cumul devant Steve Chaput #38 et Robert Larocque #07.

  

Lightning Sprint 20 tours

Jordan et Yannick Poirier #28 et #28P qui sont en tête de classement viendront croiser le fer ce vendredi. Alex Therrien #39 en troisième position du cumul souhaite réduire l'écart de 60 points entre lui et Jordan, mais Stéphane St-Laurent #29 n'est pas très loin de lui en quatrième place avec 3 points de différence. St-Laurent #29 qui a gagné au RPM le 30 juin dernier sa 11ème victoire après 10 ans d'abstinence, sera aussi présent sur notre piste. Enfin, nous retrouvons Pascal Lévesque #3 au top 5 du classement qui vient aussi vendredi.  Les vétérans Guillaume Neiderer #51 et Éric Sundborg #16 qui ont partagé le podium les deux dernières années à Granby tenteront de répéter l'expérience. Benjamin Malo #740 qui a débuté sa carrière l'an dernier, Alex Vigneault #21, Tomy Moreau #22 en 2014 et Sébastien Hébert #78H en 2013 ont tous levé la main en disant :  «présent vendredi». Michel Audy qui a laissé le volant en 2010 suite à un accident fait son retour en piste avec le numéro M14 ce vendredi au grand plaisir de ses fans. Les recrues Benoit Lafleur #8L, Xavier Lauzon #20 et Michael Benoit #25B viendront aussi tenter leur chance. Ce dernier n'a pas pu participer aux finales du RPM la semaine dernière étant donné un trouble électronique de moteur. La recrue la mieux positionnée au championnat, Sabrina Blanchet #79S devrait être là et à son avantage, car elle est à un seule point devant l'autre recrue Charles Bélanger #71.

There has been no official mention of it. In fact, the only word beginning with the letter 'R' that is discussed around the family dinner table is 'racing'. Sunday, July 3rd Craig Graham climbed back into a racecar for the first time in nearly 2 years, with his sights set on a preferred Autumn Colours Classic starting spot at Peterborough Speedway's Chase for the Colours Pole Qualifying event.

 

Since his 7th place Pro Late Model finish at the 2014 edition of the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing, the 43 year-old from Orono, Ontario – who works as the Fixed Vehicle Operations Manager at Clarington Hyundai – has served as mentor, coach and raceday spotter for his son Brandt's effort in the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series. Even though he was turning his first laps in almost a couple of seasons, Graham says he quickly found his rhythm behind the wheel.

 

"Any rust I might have been feeling quickly went away after we made it to the race track for a few laps of practice," said the driver, while relaxing with a cold drink after the 60 lap feature. "We needed to get a feel for how the car would perform on a track that would be baking in the bright sunlight all day. I've always liked the extra distance races that allow us to put together a set-up that will let the car continue to perform as the race wears on."

 

The #98 machine worked well throughout the day, but with every driver on the tight, tricky layout fighting for the bottom groove, track position was at a premium. Graham would occasionally get as high as 2nd place in the running order, but lose the spots he'd gained when he was forced to restart on the outside after a caution flag. As the checkered flag waved, Craig Graham had logged a 6th place finish.

 

"It was a decent day, but when you have a strong crew effort by the crew and a good car, you're always hoping for a better finish," conceded Graham. "As our schedule permits, we might come back a couple of times again before the end of the year. Anything that'll give us some additional notes to work from will help a ton come October."

 

Brandt Graham will be in the running for the biggest payday of his young racing career when the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series returns to Sauble Speedway Saturday, July 16th. He'll need to start at the rear of the field for the 100 lap main event, but if he's able to claim the checkered flag, the 18 year-old will head home with a $1,000 bonus and add the title of "Boss of the Beach" to his impressive resume.
