| Roy shows Airborne Mods no mercy Branham snags Sportsman “4-20’s” win South Plattsburgh – Martin Roy had a good season this week at Airborne. Roy dove underneath Pierre Berthiaume for the lead on lap 16 after pressuring him on the outside for several laps and then drove off to his fourth straight Ernie’s Discount Tools Modified win and his third in the last eight days Saturday night. His winning margin was 10 car lengths over Patrick Dupree with Berthiaume third. Dupree came from 15th to claim the runner-up spot. |
| “The yellows helped on the way up through,” Dupree said. “But on the first restart, he (Roy) kind of got away from me.” Maxime Viens (4th) was the third Quebec pilot in the top five. Vince Quenneville had a strong showing in fifth, four car-lengths ahead of Greg Atkins and Viens’ father Michael, who placed seventh. Leon Gonyo was eighth. All four cars turned in 20 laps of close-quarters racing with one another.
Twenty-six Modifieds started the 30-lap event, which had five cautions and was red flagged on lap 22 for a three-car pileup involving Jason Bruno, Aaron Bartemy and Mike Phinney. Don Scarborough and Pat McGrail filled out the top ten.
Bucko Branham won the J&S Steel Sportsman feature, which was run in four 20-lap segments. Branham won the second segment on the way to a winning total of eight points (2-1-3-2). He was running third in final 20-lap segment just behind rookie Bill Thwaits, who was poised to win the overall event when his car shut down with two laps to go. Thwaits won the opening and third segments and was seeking his first career win. His electrical demise relegated him to fourth place overall. Robin Wood (4-2-2-3=11) was the runner-up. Shawn Duquette’s pass of Tylor Terry on the final lap earned him third place. Jamy Begor won the final segment.
“It’s been a good year,” Branham said. “I was questioning myself about racing so hard to win the second segment. I scraped the wall and tore up some sheet metal and bars. A race like this can be all about saving your right rear and I used my up some. I feel bad for Billy, he drove a good race.”
Rick Doner of Ausable Forks continued his dominance in the NAPA Mini-Modified division with his seventh win of the season. Justin Doner, CJ LaVair, Jamie LaFountain and Kris Clark finished 2-3-4-5.
Keith O’Neil wired the field in the non-points Versatile Trailer Sales Renegade feature.
Bill Joyal of Ausable Forks inherited the Monster Energy Bomber win when Curtis LaGrave weighed in too light in the tech line. Scott Richner was the runner-up.
