Taking it to the Streets: Delaware Speedway Goes Downtown London on Tuesday

August 25, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Under police escort, a number of Delaware Speedway racing vehicles will pass through downtown London on Tuesday at 1:00 pm in celebration of the track’s long-running Great Canadian Race Weekend and sixty-first season of competition.

A rare sight to see racing vehicles on the roads, these high-powered cars are not permitted on the roadways unless under police escort and special arrangements made.  Getting underway at 1:00 pm the route stretches from the Western Fair Agriplex and circles through the city’s downtown core via York Street and Richmond Street before heading down Oxford Street and returning to the Western Fair.

“Bringing these race vehicles into the city leading up to one of our major events is a celebration of the hard work these drivers and teams put in each and every week,” explained track PR director John Houghton.  “The sight of race cars downtown may catch many Londoners by surprise, many of whom remain unaware of the great competition taking place at Delaware, or even the existence of the track.”

Participating drivers include:

#3 Mark Watson of St. Thomas (Current Late Model Division Points Leader)

#51 Matt Robblee of Dorchester (Current Super Stock Division Points Leader)

#55 Gary Adriaensen (Current Truck Division Points Leader)

#22 Jamie Cox of Dorchester (Late Model)

#21 Matt Pritiko of London (Late Model)

Delaware Speedway, located minutes from London, is gearing up for the biggest weekend of the year at the track: the Great Canadian Race Weekend held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of Labour Day.  The weekend features three days of racing.  On Friday, local divisions running along with a King of the Hill Spectators race.  Saturday is “Cheapskate Saturday” with $10 bargain admission to see the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup 100 and Bone Stock Chaos Cars.  Sunday is the main event, the Keystone Light 200 Great Canadian Race with the track’s fastest cars taking to the speedway.  Camping is available at the track throughout the weekend.
