Kawartha Speedway 2012: Taking the Next Step

By Jim Clarke, Kawartha Speedway PR/Clarke Motorsports Communications

Action is the attraction Friday nights in Fraserville.

To date, there have been 2 events run in Kawartha Speedway’s 2012 campaign, with different winners in each of the track’s regular divisions during both nights of racing.  Friday, June 15th, Dave Morgan, Matt Spence and Brad Martin earned the NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Model, Thunder Car and Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental main event checkered flags in the rain delayed season opener.  A week later, defending track champion Dan McHattie, Willie Reyns and Daryl Fice claimed the same honours in their respective feature races.

After a one week break Friday, June 29th, the popular 3/8th mile oval roars back to life Friday, July 6th with action in all 3 regular divisions, but the highlight of the night will be the 9th annual running of the Summer Sizzler.  The 150 lap extravaganza – run in 3 highly competitive 50 lap segments with a reverse handicapped scoring system – is the facility’s marquee event and draws a huge level of support from fans and drivers alike.

In 2011, Port Hope, Ontario’s Bryan Mercer entered the track history books by becoming the first Kawartha regular to claim a Summer Sizzler win.  It wasn’t just the second feature win of the season for the veteran racer, who’ll celebrate his 39th birthday the day before this year’s running.  It was a dominating performance, with checkered flags in 2 of the show’s 3 segments.

One of the leading contenders to win this year’s edition would be Ryan Kimball.  After seeing a shot at his first Kawartha Speedway late model checkered flag disappear with a late race spin during the season opener, the Norwood, Ontario speedster – who captured the Thunder Car track championship in 2002 – currently sits second in NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Model points, just 19 markers behind Dan McHattie and Mercer who are tied for the top spot.  Kimball is wheeling a brand new McColl Racing Enterprises this season and says he’s thrilled with the car’s performance.

“The team and I are still learning about the new car, but I love the way it feels,” said Kimball, who won the night’s first qualifying event Friday, June 22nd.  “It’s been a great season so far and I hope we keep things rolling the way they’ve started.  A win in the Summer Sizzler wouldn’t just make my year; it could very well define my career.”

As always, gates open Friday, July 6th at 3:00.  Rotating practice sessions begin at 5:00, with the night’s first green flag at 7:00.

Kawartha klips:  Extra distance races in all divisions are the highlight of Kawartha Speedway’s season.  Following the Summer Sizzler, the NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models run a 100 lapper Friday, August 17th.  The Thunder Cars battle for 50 laps Friday, July 27th and August 24th, while the Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stocks have 50 lappers Friday, July 20th – part of the annual Fan Appreciation Night – and again September 7th...The Richard Petty Driving Experience returns to the track Saturday and Sunday, July 14th and 15th.  Information can be found at www.drivepetty.com/can-tour, or by calling 1.800.Be.Petty (1.800.237.3889)...View the complete track schedule and see the latest news at www.kawarthaspeedway.com.
