Foley takes Airborne Mod checkers
Photo finish wins for Branham and Wood South Plattsburgh – George Foley of Saranac Lake snatched his second victory of the season, besting a 30-car Modified field at Airborne Speedway Saturday. Foley held off veteran Leon Gonyo of Chazy for the win. Both drivers are sponsored in part by Egglefield Ford. |
The race got off to a ragged start – five cautions in eight laps – which worked to Foley’s advantage. “I kept starting on the outside and the car was going really well out there”, he said. “Then when I got to the front, they went to single-file restarts.” Foley started 10th in a 29-car field. He sped around Gonyo on the outside for the lead on lap seven. He built a lengthy lead, but his winning margin was trimmed to three car-lengths in the late going when he had to navigate heavy lapped traffic. Pat McGrail of Candiac, QC was a strong third, four car-lengths behind Gonyo. Martin Roy and Patrick Dupree were 4th and 5th respectively. Jason Durgan (subbing for Mike Phinney), Dan Brown, Greg Atkins, Kris Vernold and Don Scarborough completed the top ten. “We brought the old Teo chassis car after our new one got run over two weeks ago. I ran the track spec tire on the right rear and it worked great.” The win was Foley’s second of the season and it moved him into second place in the Ernie’s Discount Tools point standings – two points ahead of Roy. Defending champion Patrick Dupree is the point leader. The J&S Steel Sportsman ran a pair of 25-lap features and both were decided by fractions of a second. Bucko Branham caught Danny Sullivan at the wire in the opener. Robin Wood scored his fifth win in the nightcap, inches ahead of Shawn Duquette. Branham got up for third with a last lap pass of Nick Heywood (4th). Jamy Begor was fifth. In the first Sportsman contest, Branham and Sullivan were paired on the front row of a restart with three laps left. On the next to last lap they crossed the line in a dead heat. Wood was third, Nick Heywood fourth and Jamy Begor fifth. Lance Rabtoy of Fairfax, VT used the bottom groove to pass Don Franklin for the lead and get his first Renegade win. Joe Warren followed Rabtoy through to gain the runner-up spot. Josh Terry caught Franklin at the line for third. Erick Sayles won the NAPA Mini Modified feature. Josh LaPorte was 2nd, Kris Clark was 3rd. Curtis LaGrave Jr won the Bomber feature. Both events ran under green from start to finish. The next event at Airborne Speedway is the Della Auto Group ISMA Supermodified 50, Saturday, July 23. Post time 6 p.m. Also in action – Airborne’s weekly Renegade, Mini Modified and Bomber divisions.
