Big events remain on Airborne schedule

For immediate release – AS-082911-1

South Plattsburgh – Airborne Speedway remembers long-time track photographer Mike Watts this Saturday, September 3, in the first of three notable events still too come on the 2011 schedule.

The Della Auto Group Mike Watts Memorial 50 for DIRTCar Modifieds will decide the 2011 track championship in a season of unprecedented support from race teams. No fewer than 26 cars have started each Ernie’s Discount Tools Modified event and car counts of 30-plus have been the norm.

The weekend of September 10-11, the Airborne Modified pits will be overflowing for the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Charlie Trombley Memorial 100 Big Block/Small Block Challenge, a Syracuse qualifier. Airborne’s top regulars, Martin Roy, Patrick Dupree, George Foley, Andy Heywood, Vince Quenneville and Leon Gonyo will be tested by several top-notch invaders including Brett Hearn.

The American Canadian Tour” Fall Foliage 200, a combination event with Séries Castrol, is set for Saturday, October 8.

Mike Watts covered racing at Airborne on a weekly basis from the 1960’s to the 1980’s. In addition, he was the track photographer at Mohawk International Raceway. He returned to Airborne on a weekly basis in 2005 when his close friend Mike Perrotte became promoter and brought DIRTcar 358-Modifieds back to the track. The duo collaborated on the Champlain Valley Motorsports shows in Plattsburgh.

The Mike Watts Memorial 50 will determine the 2011 Airborne Modified champion. Martin Roy, the 2009 champion, is the point leader. George Foley and Patrick Dupree are his closest competitors.

Also on the Della Auto Group card is a 50-lap Sportsman feature that will include several invaders from Autodrome St-Eustache. The Renegades, Mini Modifieds and Bombers will also be in action.
