Lapped traffic sets up Stone victory

Atkins’ bid comes up short

South Plattsburgh – Todd Stone scored a right-place right-time win at Airborne Satuday after stalking Greg Atkins for much of the Ernie’s Discount Tools Modified 30-lap main event.

Atkins led for 26 laps, only to get shuffled by a backmarker that drifted up into his path as he exited turn four three laps shy of his first Airborne win. Stone pounced at the opportunity, shot around Atkins and the lapped car and grabbed the lead for keeps.

Stone started 12th and arrived at Atkins bumper after a lap-12 restart. It was close-quarters racing from there with Atkins gaining an advantage out of turns two and four and Stone closing ground at the ends of the straightaways.

“Greg had a fast car,” Stone said. “I’ve lost one like that here before. I’ll take it however I can get it. I’ve had a lot of help with the car from my crew chief Jeff Carter, Lou Ciccone, Rick Paya and all the guys who work on it. It got better as the night went on. After that restart, it was time to go.”

Patrick Dupree dodged a couple of bullets in early check-up action and had a strong run for third although a few car-lengths off the wining pace. Just behind him, George Foley and Pat McGrail went at it for a dozen laps for fourth.

Foley held McGrail off for 4th. The second half of the top-10 went to Andy Heywood, Mike Reyell, Vince Quenneville, Roger Labreche and Leon Gonyo.

The win was Stone’s second of the regular season to go along with a Modified Series victory and it helped boost his point over McGrail (486-452).

Andrew Bordeau of Dannemora, under constant attack from Richie Turner, led every step of the way in the Vacuum City No. 08 to score his first career win in the Key RD Trailer Sales 25-lap feature.  Robert Gordon (3rd) and Jim Varno (4th) had a lengthy door-to-door duel behind the leaders with Robbie Favreau, Jason McClatchie and Joe Warren next in line.

“I just tried to keep a steady line in the corner,” Bordeau said. “I knew he was right there.”

The Renegades raced two-by-two 14 positions deep for more than 15 laps. Saturday, July 21, they’ll compete in the Aaron’s 100 paying $1,000-to-win. A competition yellow will be thrown after lap 50 and the mid-race leader will win a big-screen television courtesy of Aaron’s.

Robin Wood drove the Ganienkeh Bingo/Rent-A-Wreck No.61 to his second Limited Late Model win. Wood took the lead from Shawn Duquette after a six-lap wheel-to-wheel battle. Jamy Begor got up for second. Bucko Branham narrowly maintained his point lead by finishing third.

Nick Heywood rallied late in the 20-lap Adirondack Water Sportsman Modified feature to pass Bobby Therrien checkers. Lonnie Rivers, Jake Branham and Joe Daniels completed the top five.

Rob Clark of Keeseville, Erick Sayles of Lake Clear and Ty Drown of Morrisonville finished 1-2-3 in the Mini Modified feature.
