Roy wins second straight - gains Airborne point lead

SOUTH PLATTSBURGH – Martin Roy swooped around leaders Greg Atkins and Leon Gonyo with nine laps to go and went on to his second straight DIRTcar Modified win on Della Auto Group Night at Airborne Speedway.

The 30-lap main event was a bruiser that took nine cautions to complete. Clean restarts were the issue. The race was red-flagged after three laps when Matt Woodruff got up on the wheel of Cam Grady’s machine and slammed into the turn four wall. Woodruff was not seriously injured.

Roy started 15th in a 28-car field, gained some spots early by attrition, and then passed a trio of cars on the backstretch as they were navigating a back marker to move into eighth on lap 10. At that point, the top-5 running order was Atkins, Gonyo, Jimmy Ryan, Mike Reyell and Craig Reyell.

George Foley got up to second with a late charge in the outside lane. A final caution on lap 26 gave him a shot at the win, but Roy pulled away at the drop of the green and won by three car-lengths. Atkins held off a late charge from Vince Quenneville to claim fourth. Positions 6-10 went to Mike Phinney, Andy Heywood, Jimmy Ryan, Pierre Berthiaume and  Chris Cayea.

On lap 21, Gonyo was sizing up Atkins for a possible pass for the lead, when Roy moved farther outside to pass them both. “It was a crazy race,” he said. “I tried to wait for a while for the trouble to stop.”

The former track champion had spent the afternoon qualifying for a NASCAR Canadian Tire event at Trois Rivieres. “It was important for me to get back to Airborne tonight and try to keep racing for the championship. Thanks to all the fans who come out and support the track.”

Defending Ernie's Discount Tools Modified champion Patrick Dupree began the night as the point leader, but he suffered electrical problems in his heat race and started at the rear of the field in a back-up car that was soon sidelined with a broken panhard bar.

Roy now leads Dupree 460-448 with three point races remaining. Foley is in third place another 14 points back.

Robin Wood, Jamy Begor and Bucko Branham finished nose to tail in the J&S Steel Sportsman feature. Wood took the lead on a lap-10 restart and drove to his sixth win. Nick Heywood and Dave Rabtoy finished 4-5. Earlier, Begor won the six-lap $250-to-win Sportsman “Dash for Cash”.

Point leader Kevin Boutin of Fairfax, VT held off Robbie Favreau to win the Renegade feature. The pair traded the lead several times while running door to door - Boutin inside, Favreau outside. Lance Rabtoy was a close third. Josh Allen and Robert Gordon were next in line. The Renegade “Dash for Cash” was won by Josh Terry of Morrisonville.

Erick Sayles of Lake Placid took the Mini Modified checkers with Kris Clark of Keeseville a car-length away. Josh LaPorte finished third after swapping the position three times with point leader Speedy Bresette (4th). CJ LaVair was fifth. The win was Sayles’ fourth of the season.

Curtis Lagrave Jr. of Plattsburgh won the Busch Bomber feature.

This coming Saturday, August 13, the J&S Steel Sportsman take the spotlight for the 2nd annual “4-20’s” event. Each 20-lap sprint pays $500-to-win. The overall winner – lowest combined finishes total – will earn an additional $500.
