Kawartha Speedway 2012: Getting in the Game

By Jim Clarke, Kawartha Speedway PR/Clarke Motorsports Communications

The kick-off for a new campaign at Kawartha Speedway was originally scheduled for Friday, June 1st but Mother Nature had a different plan.  It may be a couple of weeks later than first intended, but action at the Fraserville, Ontario 3/8th mile oval gets underway Friday, June 15th with a 100 lap invitational event for the NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models highlighting a program that also includes Thunder Cars and the Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stocks.  General Manager/Promoter Derek Lynch says the 2012 season opener will be the meal that satisfies an 8 month hunger.

“Having our first event of the year rained-out was a huge disappointment for everyone,” said Lynch.  “On the positive side of the coin, it gives everyone some extra time to make sure everything is ready for the first green flag.  Our May 25th practice session saw some new faces in all 3 of our regular divisions and I’m sure there’ll be even more drivers itching for a Friday night place to race.”

While it’s impossible to predict the driver line-up in any class until action takes to the track, officials have been able to determine that Dan McHattie and Ken Donaldson Jr. will be back to defend their 2011 late model and thunder car championships.  With Darragh ‘Too’ Moroney deciding to step away from the sport after winning last year’s Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stock crown, there will be a new face at the champion’s table when the season-ending awards for the track’s entry level class are handed out.

With a $1500 cheque payable to the winner of the NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Model 100 lapper, a number of invaders are expected to join the Kawartha regulars for a full-fendered slugfest.  Internet chatter has already confirmed that 2008 late model rookie of the year and most improved driver Brandon Watson will be part of the show.  As always, pit gates will open at 3:00 with rotating practice sessions starting at 5:00.  The night’s first green flag waves at 7:00.
