Airborne Speedway June 4 Recap

South Plattsburgh, NY – George Foley of Saranac Lake started 14th in a 30-car field of Ernie’s Discount Tools DIRTcar Modifieds and wound up in the winner’s circle after passing upset-minded Cameron Grady with two laps to go Saturday at Airborne Speedway. Foley’s win came after Chuck Hossfeld won the Della Auto Group 100 in the Race of Champions Asphalt Modifieds’ inaugural Airborne appearance.

Grady, the polesitter, was looking for his first career win in the Andy Kane Automotive No. 27. He led the first 27 laps through two restarts and finished fourth. Pat McGrail of Candiac, QC, who ran in the top five all night, was the runner-up. Patrick Dupree advanced steadily by running strong, top or bottom, to claim third. Daniel Brown of Sutton, QC was fifth. Positions 6-10 went to Kris Vernold, Andy Heywood, Craig Reyell, Martin Roy and Don Scarborough.

The win was Foley’s first of the season and seventh of his career. It was the first Ford-powered win in a DIRTcar Modified at Airborne.

“I developed a push halfway through and I wasn’t too sure about racing on the outside to catch the 27 (Grady), but it worked out,” Foley said in victory lane. “It’s been a while since I’ve been here.”

Foley passed Brown on the high side for third on lap 19. One lap later, Dupree went three-wide to overtake Craig Reyell and Andy Heywood for 6th. The second restart came on lap 22 after a multi-car collision turn three involving Terry Hayes, Bryant Trim, Leon Gonyo, Jim Ryan and Adam Bartemy. When the green came out, Dupree went by Vernold for fifth and began to pressure Brown.

A late yellow set up Robin Wood’s third straight J&s Steel Sportsman win on Saratoga Auto Body/Furniture World Night.  Wood worked his way by Bucko Branham, who led most of the way. Travis Bruno of Plattsburgh edged Branham in a photo finish for second. Nick Heywood of Plattsburgh was fourth.

Wood and Branham are now tied on the all-time winner’s list (24) and promoter Mike Perrotte has put a $250 bounty up for whoever can break his current winning streak.

Erick Sayles of Saranac Lake held off hard-charging Chris Lavair of Gabriels to earn his first Mini Modified win. Josh LaVarnway placed third.

Josh Durivage came from the rear of the field to win his third straight Busch Bomber event. Curt Lagrave Jr. led much of the way and finished second.

Robbie Favreau of Peru scored his first ever Versatile Trailer Sales Renegade win. Defending champion Kevin Boutin wa second, followed by Big Daddy Don Franklin, Joe Warren and Josh Terry.
