Race of Champions Asphalt Modifieds head for Airborne

For immediate release

AS-060211-1

South Plattsburgh – Race of Champions Asphalt Modified teams from every corner of New York state will be hauling to Plattsburgh this Saturday for the Della Auto Group 100 at Airborne Speedway.

The lightweight, low-slung NASCAR Tour-type Modifieds run wide slicks and put out 600-plus HP.

Chuck Hossfeld, winner of last weekend’s RoC Series opener at Oswego Speedway, and runner-up Erick Rudolph will make the trip from greater Buffalo. The father and son team of Jan and Mike Leaty hails from Rochester. Two-time Series runner-up Deren Scherer will head north from Binghamton. Top runner Kyle Ebersole, 18, races out of Harrisburg, PA.

Jan Leaty, the series elder, has won Modified races on nearly every asphalt track in New York, including Holland, Oswego, Shangri-La, Chemung, Spencer and Dunn Tire Park (Lancaster), where he took the checkered flag two weeks ago. Leaty is a nine-time winner on the NASCAR Whelen Modified circuit, including two wins at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

“I was in a new car at Oswego, but struggled with shocks and handling and finished 11th,” Leaty said. “We’re going to bring ol’ reliable, the car we won with two weeks ago, to Airborne. Mike had a good day (3rd) at Oswego.”

The Leatys field a third car driven by Patrick Emerling of Orchard Park, NY.

“We’re both excited about coming to Airborne,” Leaty Sr. said. “We hear it’s a first-rate facility.”

Scherer finished 9th at Oswego after a making a pit stop. The 28 year-old from Binghamton began his career in a Legends car and has finished second in points on the tour the last two seasons. He drives the No.3 sponsored by the Binghamton Mets, the New York Mets AA affiliate.

Defending Series champion Matt Hirschman from Northampton, PA dropped out from the Oswego event early with motor issues and is questionable for Saturday.

All Airborne weekly divisions, including the DIRTcar Modifieds, will compete on the Furniture World of VT and Saratoga Auto Body race card. Admission is $20 – kids 12 and under free.

Post time is 6 p.m.
