Stone "Brings It" at Airborne

Branham notches 7th win

South Plattsburgh – Todd Stone dove underneath a group of backmarkers  that race leader George Foley was trying to negotiate on the high side with nine laps to go and went on to win the high-speed 30-lap “Run What Ya Brung” Modified feature at Airborne Speedway Saturday.

Stone pocketed $1500 for his fourth win of the year in a topless, winged, G Stone Motors machine with a ported 358 engine. Foley finished second and landed a $500 bonus courtesy of Huntley Trucking for having led (randomly drawn) lap 14. His Egglefield Ford/Pulsifer Logging No. 34 turned the quickest lap of the race at 116.48 mph.

Patrick Dupree was a strong third. Fast-closing Andy Heywood was fourth , a car-length ahead of fifth-place Matt Woodruff .

Foley started on the pole and dominated the early going. Stone started seventh and rose to second in 10 laps, but watched Foley pull away on a lap-13 restart. When Foley first reached the back of the pack, he had a six car-length lead, but traffic slowed him down.

Syracuse invader Tony Steiner yielded third to Dupree  just before getting collected in a multi-car spin that sent him to the rear and knocked hard-charging Leon Gonyo out of the running. Steiner rallied to finish sixth. Positions 7-10 went to Roger Labreche, Craig Reyell, Vince Quenneville and Pat McGrail.

Stone holds a 14-point lead over McGrail in the Ernie’s Discount Tools Modified point standings with two point races remaining.

Bucko Branham of Plattsburgh took quick command of the Limited Late Model feature with a three-wide route that put him on the point on lap six. He was never headed despite three restarts on the way to becoming a seven-time winner. Fred Lagoy of Cadyville held off Shawn Duquette in a lengthy side-by-side battle for second. Robin Wood caught Jamy Begor at the wire for fourth.

Nick Heywood brought the Warren Tire No. 29 home in first-place in the 20-lap Sportsman Modified feature. Heywood stalked early leader Sebastien Fournier for a dozen laps being making the winning pass. “I saw that he was getting a little loose and I just waited for my opportunity,” Heywood said. Jessey Mueller of Olmsteadville reeled in Fournier and drew close to Heywood in the final laps to claim the runner-up spot. Travis Bruno and Jamie LaFountain completed the top five.

Jason McClatchie of Plattsburgh won the Renegade feature in the C N Hobbies/TDI Repair No. 70 and dedicated the win to the memory of his cousin TJ Seymour. McClatchie took advantage of a restart on lap 12 to get the best of Robert Gordon. Tylor Terry advanced into second. Lance Rabtoy gained two spots late to finish third.

Jayson Criss, Rob Clark and Josh Lavarnway finished 1-2-3 in the Busch Mini Modified feature.
